It's more about making sure none of the junkie mongoloids try to huff any of the components. TNT uses toluene, aka paint thinner, run through a delicate process with a corrosive substance. If you accidentally dump too much nitric acid in, or someone decides to give the toluene a big ol' huff, the process increases in speed exponentially - the reaction increases in speed, as temperature increases, causing the entire thing to go up.
Nitroglycerin is even worse - it's way more unstable, alongside all of those same problems as above. They have to mix together sulphuric acid and nitric acid so that any impurities get handled by the sulphuric acid - because a slight problem makes the entire thing go boom-boom.
