Preface

This thread will focus on the hit indie game Poppy Playtime. Poppy Playtime is the next big thing since Hello Neighbor and is an action platformer horror game where you visit an abandoned toy factory and in that toy factory, the toys are alive - That's the entire premise.

Controversies

Poppy Playtime has attracted numerous criticism for the CEO's harassment of a random animator who didn't want anything to do with their business and the NFT scandal.

Youtube commentary channels have quickly smelled blood in the water and spawned a few dozen videos on the game.

Discuss.

ETA: Updating the OP with everything Poppy Playtime has allegedly plagiarised thus far.
  1. A nobody game called Venge. (*)
  2. Bendy and the Ink Machine. (*)
  3. Huggy Wuggy might have been inspired by Wilt from Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends, but could just be a coincidence too. (*)
  4. The name "Huggy Wuggy" comes from a muppet, except the A was swapped for a Y. (*)
  5. The design for Cat-Bee might have taken a great inspiration from Wuzzles' Bumblelion. (*)
  6. The design for Mommy Long Legs took a great inspiration from Betty Spaghetty. (*)

I already said it in another thread but bears repeating. I believe unironically that Poppy's Playtime is one of the most cynical indie games ever made, everything about it is designed around not only riding FNaF's coattails and to pander to the clickbait youtubers that make a dozen of overly long spretentious lore videos (*cough* MatPat *cough*) and the typical reaction comps to "spooky" setpieces, plus the easily marketable characters to make sellable physical merchandise.

They wanted the huge payoff of the thing they were copying, but didn’t want to put in the effort to get that payoff naturally, causing the experience to feel hollow and derivative. They wanted the commercial success that FNaF had, leading them to build a commercial empire of what is essentially a tutorial.

100% this. I've been saying it as well that they saw how big FNaF got and wanted to replicate it. They have NFTs and how big of a merchandise line? To me its like they decided to make a product then worked backwards to create a game to generate free hype for those products.

Went to a community market the other day, the usual toy stalls selling questionably legal 'branded' toys imported from overseas had numerous plush toys of Poppy Playtime's blue mascot. If the counterfeit toy sellers can see it, it's pretty obvious that this game is meant to cash in on the recent fad of 'child-friendly horror games', no matter what its developers may say.

Five Nights A Freddy's is a video game with a product brand. Poppy's Playtime is a product brand with a video game.

The game is so stupid, it's supposed to be set in the 1930s yet has kawaiiiiii posters plastered all over the "factory" in a style completely inaccurate to the time. The setting is so confusing and all over the place. There's referencing and wording completely inaccurate to the time as well. They didn't even do a tinge of research.

The game is set in the 1930s? I never would of figured that one out.

The beginning of the game has an intro video of each chapter (which as of now there's like 2 of them) where it goes for that "old retro advertisement" look. Chapter 1 was during the 1930's. Chapter 2 looked like it was more the 80's maybe?

Don't forget the HUGE amount of unofficial iPhone/Android apps saturating the entire store.

The first chapter is free since the second chapter is released.

also the second chapter costs 8$ and you dont get a discount if you bought the first chapter for 8$.

Make of this what you will.

Poppy Playtime Griefing Thread. Is it really grieving if we're taking the piss out of something that's not all that good to begin with? $8 for just a slice of content, are you fucking kidding me? Say what you want about Scott, at least that guy releases complete content.

Didn't think the first one was all that bad. Short, seemed kinda vaguely amusing. Monster had interesting animations, felt kinda spooky but it wasn't anything new or groundbreaking. Hearing its trying all this crap doesn't surprise me in the slightest, everyone wants to be the next FNAF. Hello Neighbor tried and yet more will try in the future.

It's an 8 dollar slice of streamer fodder.

the time period makes absolutely no sense
the only thing actually intriguing to me in poppy is the concept of them stuffing child meat into toys
Imagine you're spending millions and all your resources into autonomous toys and decide not to become immortal as a transformer.

Killing children seems to be the better goal in Fnaf and Poppy.

I took one look at it and knew it was going to be another one of what I've dubbed "kiddie horror games". There's nothing special about it and I guarantee merch will probably be all over normie nerd shops within the next year or so.
