There's plenty of RPGs which don't focus on the story. John Carmack said it best on that front. If I want to play an RPG for story why don't I just play a better story focused RPG? Golden Sun blows Pokemon out of the water on every front except monster catching. Accepting Pokemon is a bad RPG but a good monster catching game is the first step to fixing the decline.

Remember how everyone hates that big RPG release because it railroads you for most of the game and shoves annoying characters in your face? What was that game called again? Pokemon or Final fantasy 13? and FF13 has less annoying characters than Hau or Hop

And this is why no matter how bad Pokemon gets it will still sell millions of copies. You want to buy a game in case it comes with a poster despite not owning the console it's on or having any intention of playing it.
I think 'buys the game just for the merch' is an EXTREMELY niche market, dude. Hardly some tentpole of the millions of sales.

Pokemon makes millions because, as much as we shit on it now, they built a framework over literal decades of a system that people can both have serious competitive matches in and nearly clear whole games with a single magikarp. Anything that seriously tries to muscle in on the territory is either seen as a clone or diverges so far that it's not even on the radar and struggles at least one of PvP or PvE. It's a system that can be partially or fully represented - or even enhanced - in roguelikes, strategy games, TCGs, puzzlers, all kinds of shit. And it’s rooted in a complex type chart but when you apply common knowledge, you know half the chart without even looking at it.

I just replayed bw1 and the accusations of being stopped every five minutes for the plot are over exaggerated. Most of the cutscenes are a small handful of test boxes and last barely a minute long. The only bad parts are the beginning and the sequel’s PWT tutorial but for the most part it is ridiculously minimal.

Also every time I see someone whine about the “overexessive” cutscenes of gen 5 and other modern Pokemon games I highly doubt they’ve played other jrpgs or general rpgs outside of the series. The amount of text and interruptions in even SuMo are pitifully low compared to other games. For example Digimon Cyber Sleuth, which is often sucked off by people and praised as a good alternative to Pokemon, is ten times worse than any modern Pokemon game put together in terms of characters interrupting you, cutscene density, horrible pacing issues and linearity and railroading that makes even SwSh look more open. No joke it took me a half hour of cutscenes and walls of text before I even got a chance to meet my starter Digimon and actually play the damn game.

At least Hau and Hop weren't pretentious enough to come up with something like "Operation Nora". Though, to be fair, that's an insanely low bar.

So rather than actually countering my point, what you’re trying to say is that poke fans are fuckin’ weirdos? We already know that. That doesn’t have anything to do with the gameplay itself it’s just some shitflinger.
You're taking "competitive" pokemon seriously and you expect a serious reply to that? It's hacking in pokemon and then guessing if your opponent switches or not. It's not a serious competitive anything and only a sad lonely fuck would take it seriously.

Or we played older RPGs and have been following the series since it's first released. Golden Sun is one of the most text heavy games on any handheld platform. It's immensely wordy and it's considered a classic because it knows how to balance it's story and gameplay against each other. It has obvious sections where story starts and story stops with large amounts of play time and exploration between those things. Modern pokemon doesn't have that, it has the constant 1 minute interruptions all throughout it's gameplay. There is no need for a side character to pop up after every route to tell you which path to take next or to tell you another gym leader is in this town. It's unnecessary and it's tedious.

Cyber sleuth has bad pacing too. It's got too much text and most of it is shallow. It's story is more interesting than any pokemon game is but needs a huge trimming of the fat. This is true for almost all JRPGs since the playstation days. The limits of the RPG genre were compensated by large worlds to explore, todays JRPGs don't have much in the way of exploration let alone large worlds. They have rails you follow and stops to interrupt that.

I am a huge Golden Sun fan but I will be one of the first to admit that plot was horribly generic and I remember people hating the amount of text and cutscenes back in the day. And don’t get me started on Dark Dawn.

Cyber Sluth having a better plot than Pokemon isn’t a high bar to clear and to be honest it’s story isn’t anything amazing. I almost dropped it around chapter 5 (the chapter where you are forced to help out some occult club autists over something that had nothing to do with Digimon) because the game stopped feeling like a Digimon game and more like a generic modern animu jrpg. Even after chapter 10 where the general consensus among fans is where it gets good it still didn’t shake off the “generic jrpg with Digimon thrown in” feeling.

we get it you actual autistic faggot, you hate pokemon since the core "catch em all" monster collector shit isn't 'gameplay' and any semblance of plot or character in the games isn't 'gameplay' to you either. go back to jacking your dick to tifa lockheart already since you clearly don't enjoy anything this series offers.

And you doesn't even seem to like competitive either so i genuinely don't know what the fuck you're here for.

Which is wierd bc I fucking love Cyber Sleuth's story but could care less for SuMo/SwSH's story. I'm not sure why that is. But then again I'm used to Fire Emblem and Xenoblade so...

It seems this thread has devolved to the point that Reddit tier autists have invaded. Christ, I haven't seen this much pointless bitching since the Sw/Sh National Dex controversy.

The one thing I remember about Cybersleuth is that the outdoor areas badly needed some background music. They were so damn quiet.

Also that the hot lady was actually a digimon and the bad guy essentially talked himself into giving up.

Oh, and the dude friend was using the line of evil digimon from that movie who were stopped by spam email.

I hope they make the admins hotter in dp remake...
I can't wait for Twitterfags to suddenly whine about Jupiter's left thigh being exposed means it's misogynistic after all these years. Or even wishing she and Mars would be confirmed lesbian lovers for that matter.

Then again, she's not even vaguely POC in looks, they might not screech about it.

Oh god, a partly exposed thigh? Absolute territory? I'm gonna... I'm gonna coom!

i actually did see someone shriek about it but it was a Pokemon Special fan crying about the way she was drawn in a panel. Yet again the Pokespe fanbase is infested with teenage and early 20 something SJWs who constantly bitch that both the writer and the artists are sexist for stupid reasons,
