I still adore Heart Gold. It had a lot of cool features that unfortunately haven't returned in more recent games. Something I really liked was the walking Pokemon feature, where the first member of your party would walk with you everywhere and you could talk to them. I love game mechanics that promote bonding with your Pokemon.

Didn't datamining of SuMo uncover that they tried to add that in, but it was ultimately scrapped?

In any case, I've been playing Ultra Moon slowly. I'm just at the Elite 4's gate in terms of progress, though been dicking about with the Wormholes still.

I've decided to pause my run of UM and play through all the games again in order from gen III.

Though for now I'm just playing Plat 'till a copy of LG arrives, considering my gen III games either died or disappeared. I was going to go for Sapphire and get a Linoone to AS for feels reasons, but I'm also playing AS and don't want even more Hoenn just now.

Currently I'm moreorless soloing things with Infernape, (It's level 39 and i've just beaten Fantina) 'cause I can't decide on a team. I have a Bibarel and Shellos around as HM slaves, and at some point I'll catch a disposable birb too.

It was in vanilla S&M too.
Shame these haven't been used yet, probably for the Sinnoh remakes I bet (when they happen).

i just bought Pokemon yellow and gold, any of you old folk have any tips for me?

Old folk! OLD F- yeah I've got a couple for Gold, though I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to the games.

First of all, item space is still limited, though not as badly as in Blue/Yellow/Red, though it still comes up.

Secondly, this is before moves were seperated into different categories; so for example, all fire moves are Special. This probably won't be too much of an issue, but it's a little annoying when trying to figure things out.

When it comes to the (Johto) gyms, the Fire starter is strong against three of them, and weak against the Dragon one (well, not-strong, as are all the starters). The grass starter is weak to three of them and the Water starter is neutral to all of them. Typhlosion can learn Thunder Punch by TM and Feraligatr can do the same with Ice Punch if you're stuck for coverage.

There's a few bugs you might need to worry about too (though again, other people will remember more) namely that thanks to a bug, Paralysis doesn't impact the catch rate at all due to a bug, which is especially annoying when it comes to legendaries. My advice for the main legendary for your game is to have Kurt make you a Heavy Ball.

You'll need a second Pokemon for the first gym, also you can get all three starters in the game if you play your cards right.

well, i already caught mew in pokemon yellow and got all three starters in gold.

to be fair you can get mew by the time you get to cerulian city and the second you can get a pokeball you can start duplicating pokemon in gold

When it comes to gyms, which do you guys like (either for theme or for difficulty) and which do you dislike?

Pers'nally I dislike all the teleports in Sabrina's gym.

Is it me, or does Necrozma have an increased cap rate in USUM? In my attempts to get it the right nature, I consistently caught it with a Quick Ball.

Otherwise, got some good stuff from the Ultra Wormholes, and am getting ready to take on the Elite 4.

Necrozma has a catch rate of 255 in USUM, literally the highest catch rate you can code into the game. The next time it appears some will be lowered back to normal, in recent games they usually make the box legend of the game really easy to catch, especially if you need to catch it as part of the story.

Interesting. I know since BW, they've set the cap rates for box legends to 45, not 255. Funny enough, according to sources I've looked up, and it does fit into my experience, they didn't reset the cap rates for Xerneas, Yveltal, and Rayquaza, who are still seemingly at 45.

If I may ask, where did you find the info on the Necrozma cap rate?

Dataminers. In S/M Necrozma hada a catch rate of 3, in USUM it was raised all the way to 255

In ORAS Rayquaza was raised from 3 to 45, and the ultra beasts where either raise(Nihilego, Buzzwole, Xurkitree, Celesteela, and Guzzlord) or lowered(Pheromosa and Katana) to 45 in USUM. The latter two were lowered because they were 255 previously because there was four of them you HAD to catch them in the post game plot. ORAS also changed the 4th and 5th gen's box legend catch rate from 45 to 3.

When I say "Recently" I mean since ORAS with mega rayquaza

I can’t be the only one who thinks that the clothes in S/M are ugly as sin, right?

I've said before that I can't trust leaks. They are always 99% wrong and always talk foolish, yet obvious Garbage. And then there are leaks that are totally something cool sounding, because that Alolan Grass/Fairy Oddish seemed so awesome and the Oddish line was an early favorite. It was so disappointing! USUM means nothing to me. Money is too important to me and I'm not going to buy a game I already own.

However, I'll also say again that since its been announced the next major game will be on the Switch, that Gamefreak better realize how strong the stakes have been raised. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, in particular, is something this is going to be fighting against in terms of which is better on a vast and deep scale.

Enough with the only post-game being more and more Pokemon Battles. We crave doing a lot more with the Pokemon just like Ash did in the anime from the first episode.

I've always been jealous over the anime doing things you couldn't in the game. Such as traveling with a group of trainers, and it was nice to see them finally trying to incorporate that in Gen V. but there's so much more to do! How about letting our Pokemon out of their balls when not in a battle?

I don't even have my Switch yet, but I've been spending months watching and studying Breath of the Wild videos, potential spoilers and all, because I'm well aware what kind of challenge and new thing it will be for an established franchise.

And if I'm expecting this from Zelda (and Mario, for that matter) I am going to expect the same of Pokemon.
