/vp/ is sperging out because the Japanese Pokémon Twitter account put out promotional material that included "Gotta Catch 'Em All", as if this is proof that the next generation is going to have the complete pokédex return.

Fantasists!
I have wondered to myself what, if anything, they'd do to really celebrate the milestone of a tenth generation. Returning the National Dex, even if just this once, is the only realistic thing I can think of.

Imo the last time they were serious about "gotta catch 'em all" was back in gen 6. Every single non-mythical event pokemon was catchable between XY and ORAS. With the easy to use PSS and wonder trading it was pretty clear that they also encouraged trading.

Pokemon Z most likely would've had certain pokemon be exclusive to XY or ORAS, just like crystal, emerald, and platinum had, including certain lines that could mega evolve. Another reason they would've encouraged trading.

It's a boring, bizarre procession of celebrities (I'm assuming) who are here to tell us, in a roundabout way, in painfully-contrived scenarios, with the least-natural delivery possible, about how much they like their favorite Pokémon. And these are ✨famous✨ people, so you should like whatever they like, right? Don't worry about the direction of the franchise! No thoughts! Just smile and nod along! Feel the vibe!
its a terrible ad, biggest problem is how its presented, the other one is how the pokemon selections suck. so many gen 1ers. If they wanted to do this properly it should have been pretty but autistic people sperging about their favorite pokemon, or pokemon move, or pokemon type. just reading through the posts here you can see more energy and passion than you saw in that commercial. I accidently see better videos on tiktok that would work as pokemon commercials. some hot chick with an accent sperging about her favorite pokemon, who's appearance which changes based on the season its caught. boom done.

Especially with an IP as big and famous with the under 50 crowd as pokemon, you'd think they'd just be able to put up a camera booth at any event, and get hours of footage they can use forever for ads.
They’ve been doing a lot to try to use the 30th anniversary as an opportunity to try to cash in heavily on millennial nostalgia. They’ve always pushed the first gen when it comes to merchandising, but they’ve really doubled down on it these last couple of years. It wouldn’t bug me so much if it wasn’t basically catering to people that haven’t played a game since 2001 and don’t really appreciate the franchise outside of “muh nostalgia”.
you could say the same shit about the 20th anniversary, gen1 is a millstone around the neck of the franchise
I don't want them to be good in competitive necessarily, but when a Pokèmon is completely worthless in both competitive AND in-game, i don't know what's the point
pokemon-gen-2-rival.png
Genshin Impact has almost a 50/50 gender ratio what the?? There are just as many 26 year old male and female pedos wtf?????
you know how Anita 12 years ago talked about women would be more likely to play games if they were more comfortable with the themes and characters in them? turns out she wasn't just lying to hurt kiwifarmers feelings, she actually meant it.

The announcement is that the next pokémon game will run at 60 fps, but being a small indie studio GameFreak will need to charge 80 dollars for it to make it happen.
Of course you can forget about transparent grass blade textures or any shadows if you want such performance. Truly pushing the Nintendo Switch 2 to its limits.

The best possible announcement would be a declaration that Gamefreak has been shut down, its employees banned from both the video game and software development industries, and a competent studio with actual fun ideas is making pokemon games in the future.
They really should just go back to making the 2.5d games they did on DS but for switch. The DS games don't even look bad if you bumped up the internal resolution on an emulator and it's not like Gamefreak are capable in terms of gameplay than anything more than what they provided for gen 4 and 5. Besides, they'd probably save a lot of money by not having to figure out how to develop a 3d rendering engine that rivals such games released in our current year of 2003 in graphics and performance.

Any of you guys play the Pokemon Odyssey romhack? It's actually the most fun I've had with Pokemon since Black/White 2, the difficulty made me actually appreciate mechanics I don't really use in the mainline games since they're usually really easy and I don't play competitively.

Never heard of it before, but I might be interested in checking it out. What’s it like?

My spouse recently got me hooked on Pokémon Unbound, a romhack of Fire Red. It seems to have all pokémon from gens 1-7 (and 8 added later). It’s got its own serviceable story based off the lore from Pokemon X and Y, and the occasional humor in the game has really gotten me. I’ve also been really impressed at how much restraint the game has from cramming too many in-jokes and memes and current year slop, since that’s been my impression of what fan games are typically like. I never thought I’d be at all interested in a fan game/romhack before this, yet I don’t think I’ve had this much fun with a Pokémon game in a long time, maybe ever. It’s even gotten me into learning about EVs/IVs and strategic movesets rather than just picking moves with the highest attack number. Lord help me I actually think I might 100% this thing.

That reminds me:
Pokémon kept sponsoring intermission reports (expensive ad spot) for men's Olympic hockey all the way up to the gold-medal game (very expensive ad spot).

Whatever this ad blitz was trying to get everybody to look at today had better be good.
These ads cost more than the development of ZA btw.

My predictions:
  • Boring shit like Masters, Sleep, Unite updates
  • Massive Pokapia showcase
  • Maybe Mystery Dungeon 2 remake announcement
  • Champions release date
  • Pokemon Colosseum and XD releasing on NSO
  • GO 10th anniversary celebration announcement
  • Gen5 Remake (but ONLY if it's being outsourced)
  • Gen10 reveal, probably just logos but maybe a short trailer since it's probably now truly open-world

Gen5 Remake (but ONLY if it's being outsourced)
If gen 5 remakes turn out to be serious remakes that turn out to be at least solid, then that would make BDSP being BDSP even worse.

Speaking of sinnoh, it would be hilarious if for some reason, they make a platinum remake. Not only does this mean there would be as much unique sets of sinnoh games as there are Kanto games (dp, plat, bdsp, and this hypothetical plat remake vs RB, Y, FRLG, and let's go) but it would be the most diamond and pearl thing ever to have platinum come in and fix everything.

starts in half an hour

It's all double battles, all Pokemon are re-balanced and viable, moves are easy to adjust, everyone's IVs are maxed from the start, there is a level cap so you're never OP, you can skip to 1 lvl under the current cap which changes after each floor boss, you can edit your EVs and there's a few other QoL features that mostly focus on completely cutting out the grind so you can focus on battling and team composition. Personally, I played on the hardest difficulty and to beat some of these floor bosses I needed to adjust my team, items, moves and EV allocations about 3-4 times. The exploration is also pretty great and the world is nice, there's original regional variants though I honestly don't like a lot of them design-wise but there is a Fire-type Sunflora that ended up being my MVP in a lot of battles and yes, it was a fucking Sunflora but it was still powerful as hell because of all the rebalancing. The story is ass and I honestly just started skipping dialogue towards the end but the gameplay experience is better than most mainline games imo.

Yeah, I've been meaning to try Unbound for a while but I heard on hard mode grinding for EVs and IVs is basically required which sounds extremely tedious, especially the EV training with having to battle specific Pokemon for stats. Pokemon Odyssey did give me a similar experience when it came to team comp, items and movesets though. Double battles just kind of adds a whole new layer of strategy to the game that just can't exist without it, you end up devising movesets that you never would have thought of using before. I'll try Unbound at some point when I'm not burned out on grindy JRPG's but I definitely recommend Odyssey if you want to play a difficult but fair Pokemon game while skipping the grind.

k I'm making this recap separate just for compartmentalization's sake
I am thoroughly unenthused, but halfway hoping for something as comically horrible as BDSP to be revealed so that I can laugh my ass off
here we go

  • Opening with the opening of RBGBY and a montage of the whole series, title screen themes included. Skipped over gens 2, 5, 7, and 9 for some reason to only do the others?
  • Tzunekaza standing next to the old Pikachu model. Going over how many Pokémon there are, generally jacking the series off and celebrating the 30th ("we couldn't have done this without the fans")
  • First thing shown is a collection of gen 1 music. 45 songs, being released on a small music player that looks like a gameboy. You need to switch out cartridges for each song lmao
    • Preoders starting today, I think?
  • 2026 World Championships news, pretty standard stuff. Clarifying that Champions will be used in the video game tournament, repeating the location, etc.
    • Final matches being held at the Chase Center. Presenter is bragging about it being 3x bigger than the last stadium? lol
    • Also going over Pokémon XP. Fun activities, interactive events, etc. Seems like a pretty basic relaxation area
    • World Chamionships key art revealed. Pikachu's got a pretty cute astronaut costume. Also a lot of focus on gen 5, probably because it's America.
  • TCG trailer. Montage of a bunch of old cards in different languages with penis music in the background. New cards are some weird metallic texture, trailer just ends with a "releasing simultaneously worldwide in 2026." No further clarification
  • Pokemon GO 10th anniversary trailer. Lots of old species returning.
    • GO Tour event starting tomorrow, two-days old
    • Promo code that I didn't catch because it showed up for like 5 seconds
  • Watercolor Red showing up in Masters EX. Cannot make this up if I tried
    • Florian and Ogerpon, Juliana and Terapagos
  • All starters coming to Cafe Remix, starting with KANTOOOO
  • Pokémon Sleep trailer. Mew is coming to the game starting tonight, teasers for Lati@s
  • UNITE news. Kanto bird trio reminder. Johto starters also joining. Something about Electrode volleyball?
  • TCG Pocket gets another Paldean Wonders trailer, nothing special. Just a reminder of the release and some 30th anniversary gifts
  • Pokémon XD trailer for Gamecube NSO. It's still coming, apparently. Releases in March
  • Utsunomiya pops up to talk about the FireRed/LeafGreen rerelease at 10 minutes.
    • HOME compatibility confirmed, but you can only transfer from them. Stressing that it's also compatible with Champions.
  • Champions news! Trailer immediately begins. Live action. The music makes me want to die
    • Showcasing Megas in the game and emphasizing mobile/Switch crossplay
      • tranny spotted on a bus
      • Z-A Megas included, ofc. Trailer emphasizes them most
    • Switch version releasing in April, mobile "sometime later this year"
  • Mega Dimension DLC news. Unexpected. I guess it's getting a follow-up?
    • Opening video showcasing a bunch of base game and DLC megas together. Pretty much just a recap?
    • Garchomp Z reveal. It gets a whole portion of the trailer to itself. Distributed by MYSTERY GIFT after the Presents. Has a little side quest that goes with it.
      • Seems restricted to DLC owners. You need to beat Garchomp in a pocket of Hyperspace, implying you need to be able to access Hyperspace in the first place...
  • Pokopia news, another trailer.
    • ROTOM PLAYING THE GEN 1 THEME HOLY SHIT SHUT IT UP
      • new form, "Stereo" form
      • Plays a bunch of music from the mainline series. Not just RBY thank god. Some RSE and DPPt tracks in there too (even anime tracks!)
    • Ditto is referred to as "they" throughout the entire presentation
    • Cooking mechanics, Pokémon will get hungry and you'll need to feed them. This includes the player character.
      • done with a Greedent chef that wears a pot on its head. Called Chef Dente
    • Four-player multiplayer. Not clarified whether this is local-only or online too.
      • Lengthy explanation of how fun it is to play hide-and-seek with friends. I think it took up more time than discussion of the cooking mechanic
    • Releasing March 5th, preorders available now
    • Game-key card only lol
  • Main event starts 20 minutes in. Live-action trailer that zooms in on a watercolor notebook flipping through illustrations of various other regions.
    • Gen 10's is a Pikachu sitting on the water, looking out a hotel window. Live action Pikachu appears on top of the notebook
    • Two Pikachus in costume come immediately after
    • Gen 10 reveal. Graphics look like shit as always
    • Every single leak was pretty much on-point. Protag designs are identical, big hotel is identical
    • Very similar to Gen 9's trailer, down to shots of sun on water and wild pokemon
      • Realistic textures remain, at least for the starters... but not for the humans
    • New Pikachu model revealed, looks okay in motion but come on why'd you need to make him so skinny
    • POKEBALLS ARE STILL FLOATING IN THE AIR AFTER BEING THROWN HAHAHAHA
      • I'm laughing because they took time in the trailer to fucking emphasize this
    • Starters are god-awful. Grass bird called Browt, fire dog called Pombon, water gecko called Gecqua.
      • They leaked on /vp/ ahead of time, but I honestly thought it was a joke...
    • Underwater shot with what look like in-game graphics.
    • Winds and Waves. Simultaneous release in 2027. THERE'S NO MAINLINE GAME FOR THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY YEAR :story:
    • Exclusive to Switch 2
  • that's it lol enjoy suckers

KEK NEVERMIND THEY HAD A HALF-HOUR COUNTDOWN FOR AFTER THE YOUTUBE COUNTDOWN LINED UP
Can't make this shit up man, who thought it'd be a good idea
1772199061389.png
Will write something up when it actually starts, this is just half an hour of the 30th anniversary logos flashing on different backgrounds

EDIT: it's actually started now, I'm gonna edit the spoiler as I first intended

GEN 1 intro counts: 3 in the first seven minutes
4 in 17 if you count just the theme song
