double-posting because what I'm about to say is barely-related schizo nonsense, but were Dot and Liko originally supposed to have each others' partners?

I swear I'm not going insane, look at their designs:
1742066031294.png 1742066017153.png
1742066049061.png 1742066060123.png

Both of their outfits are tailored to their exact opposite partners.

Dot has:
  • two-tone light and dark green in a shade almost identical to Sprigatito
  • pink accents (also a very similar shade to Sprigatito)
  • a backstory and personality that's very similar to a cat's, being shy and slightly abrasive,
  • as well as a tendency to hide herself behind a costume (like Meowscarada does a mask) and has a job explicitly related to trickery in performance (specifically: dressing up in costume) like how Meowscarada is based off of a sort of masked magician
Meanwhile, Liko has:
  • a majority two-tone blue palette
  • with yellow accents
  • and a lot of white (main difference is that it's tertiary on Liko but primary on Quaxly, but that's splitting hairs | EDIT: Dot also has Sprigatito's primary palette as her tertiary)
  • a rivalry with a fire-type user whom a Quaxly would be useful against
  • a more determined personality than Dot (even if she's still pretty naïve and gentle) that would compliment Quaquaval's flamboyance more than it would Meowscarada's general sleaze
Every single character in the main cast has some prominent tie to their partner embedded into their design. Roy has Fuecoco's palette on his shirt, Ludlow's hair is styled very similarly to his Drampa's, Amethio's clothes share a pattern with Ceruledge's armor. The few exceptions are Dot and Liko, as well as Ult (yet another reason why he sticks out, lol; inb4 he's actually partnered with non-shiny Zygarde because of all the green and black),.

The main thing making me hesitate on this theory is the fact that their designs don't change too much post-timeskip, but aside from chalking that up to the fact that this timeskip seems relatively minor (probably 3-5 years? Enough for Liko to go through puberty, but not enough to make them all adults) I can't even fully agree with myself here, because the timeskip does bring both Dot and Liko close to their current partners' designs:

1742066613134.png 1742066683626.png
1742066730077.png 1742066712041.png

Dot gains light blue cables and shoes to compliment Quaxwell's light blue accents (and tones down the green), while Liko gains black sleeves to go with Meowscarada's black much more obvious in the 3D model, but they are in fact black and not dark green accents. Liko also has emphasis taken off her very yellow tote bag and placed onto her neck, which now has a hood surrounding it (like Meowscarada's flower collar).

I seriously think they might've ditched the duck after how badly it flopped and gave Sprigatito to Liko last minute.

It's kind of a stretch, but I'm having a hard time unseeing it. The correlations are so obvious that I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone else propose this theory yet. Maybe someone has and I'm just not looking in the right places?

edit even their fucking hair matches up, what the hell? Liko's hair is styled quite similarly to Quaxly's (notable tuft pointing left in the front on the bangs, larger tuft in the back in the shape of a droplet) and Dot has that weird side-tuft thing that Sprigatito has going on with its poorly-drawn fleur-de-lis. Exactly three spikes of hair sticking out near her cheeks, like Sprigatito.

edit 2 I'm losing it

okay, TRIPLE-posting because this is also completely unrelated, but I think it might be important:

Legends Z-A's director has revealed himself ahead of release.

Haruka Tochigi (this is the only real English source I can find on his identity lol, sorry for the wikia link. if you know Japanese or trust online translators, here's his employee biography and interview (with Ohmori) for more info) has never directed a game before. He's done a lot of art direction, especially in regards to CG and character design (unsure of whether that relates to Pokémon or humans? it's never specified as far as I can tell), and used to make a lot of art for the Professor Layton games at Level-5. This would be the first game he's directing, and given that he's a newer employee (joined in 2013) with roots in the Gear Project he's probably not Team A (like I'd originally expected), but I haven't got very high hopes since I'm not really sure how doing a lot of art would qualify anyone to direct an entire game. I might be missing something though, I don't know enough about the process to comment.

I do find it pretty interesting how he seems to be playing a lot of indie games, and has explicitly stated that he's watching how people play PLA to try and see what he can learn from it, but I'm not sure that has any bearing on how he's actually going to run Z-A. He's also posting a lot about his own game on his Twitter (tagging it with "#indie" so I don't think it's a GameFreak title; rather, just a personal project), so he's at least been trying his hand at game dev for some time now. Notably, he also seems to think that most AAA titles "look too similar" despite their polish, and is actively trying to do things differently (written in his biography; Japanese so it might be mistranslated)... which would explain a lot, lol.

also, given how much he posts about Splatoon, I am 100% blaming him for that "splatoon-like" knockoff that the Teraleak mentioned lmao. Maybe Z-A is a way to prove his worth before getting to direct that title?

Tepig is such an ugly bastard i forgot it even was one of the starters.
Y do the characters all look like pedo tumblr trans ocs?

Tl;dr on Dynamax Raikou - It sucked.
I had fun with my group, but this fucker was buggy. We had problems getting people into groups, and the fight would bug out on some people (the UI will disappear every now and then, and I got booted out of a group). I didn't get a single good Raikou from the ones I did. A couple of people in the group helped a kid and an old lady learn how Dynamx and Gigantamax fights work. Dynamx legendaries are a major waste of time, and not worth the aggravation unless you want XL candies.

thoughts on the anime's next arc?
Still shitty and gay, but it's interesting how they're trying to push Megas to get traction. I still dislike Dot for the design alone (I hate every human design from SV and gen 9).

They're trying everything to make gen 9 relevant and popular, but I think Sprigatito and Fuecoco were always meant to be pushed because of the attention they got from SV's debut. Lyko is just a girlboss they're trying to push in the new anime (Too bad Lyko isn't popular). Roy and Dot can fuck off somewhere with Lyko.

Yea, I'm skipping ZA. This is a red flag if I haven't seen one.

I hate chikorita because chikorita is weak to the first two gyms. It's really demoralizing to use chikorita when you're a kid, and you don't know to grind.
I would link the Imported Cheese vid, but let's put it like this: Chikorita's matchups in Johto are ass and there's no real way around it. Gym 1 is rough as is gym two, but you'd think it gets better from there right? Not really. Whitney's a wash at best and it only lucks out in not getting Rollout stomped. You have the Johto Gym Split after that, but it's rough. The Ghost/Poison gym? Yeah, it eats Chikorita alive. Steel Gym? You're not really doing much physically to it and the Steelix is bringing all the pain. The Fighting gym is the only one where you gain some traction because you do well against Poliwrath. The Ice Gym is a very polarizing one - while Meganium is super effective thanks to the secondary water and ground typings in the gym the gym's also hitting you super effectively with each and every mon. The Dragon Gym is bad for Meganium too as you're getting Neutral at best against Kingdra.

The only starter that is comparable to Chikorita is Snivy and even then Snivy had a gym it did well against which is more than Chikorita can say.

In a game where you can pick totodile and evolve it early, there was never a point in picking fag potato monster over anything

Chikorita is the Gen2 version of Charmander only to a little more extreme. It's basically "hard mode" where you either grind your ass off to get it to a level where it demolishes everything or you have teammates that help you along the way.

It's like how some people give themselves artificial difficulties in other old RPGs (like Final Fantasy using only one specific class) or even why Nuzlocke is a thing. Gamers like to have some sort of challenge to make the game a little more interesting, especially if it's not their first time playing the game, and Pokemon is perfect for that.

I once grinded a Rattata up to lv 20 to evolve it into a Raticate so I can beat Brock's rock pokemon. Why? Because I wanted to, partially out of sheer boredom, but to see if one could actually get through it.

People don't like Chikorita because it sucks, simple as. I tried using this thing before, it just doesn't work. Balancing in Gen 2 overall was ass, so it's not like this is the only victim, as a matter of fact most of the new Gen 2 Pokemon were ass and we needed crossgen evos in Gen 4 to fix that.
The thumbnail for this "cecilly" looks like a troon btw

It doesn't help that the few really good gen 2 mons were all postgame or hidden away. There's no reason that Houndour had to be hidden away near fucking Celadon. Heracross is nice but it's hidden off in some trees too. I'm still convinced that Noctowl exists to make the Pidgey line look good.

GameFreak did some really weird shit when it came to stats and movelists before the physical/special split. Noctowl is made to be a special attacker, but almost all of it's moves use physical types, including it's 2 STABs. Night Shade is it's only "threatening" attacking move, but it's fixed damage. Maybe if Hypnosis didn't have garbage accuracy it could have abused dream eater and MAYBE Nightmare a bit better. Otherwise it's not doing diddly-squat with Confusion.

Unless you say "fuck it" and give it curse like all the competitive players were apparently doing back then.

As SpaceWorld beta shows, there was a massive restructuring in the last minute and a whole bunch of Pokemon got scrapped, redesigned or completely changed. Not everything must have been properly tested for balance.
Speaking of awful Gen 2 decisions, I am so glad they stopped putting in wild Pokemon that have a random chance of escaping. Fuck that, it's one thing if you have roaming Legendaries or Pokemon with Roar, but if you encounter something rare in the grass and it has a 30% chance to flee every turn, you're fucked.

And it dosent get any better. Whitney will still stomp you with Milktank and Mortys ghosts are poison. The fighting gym is the only time you at an advantage beacuse of poliwrath but then get double cucked by Jasmine and Pryce. Man, playing Chikorita is indeed the Dark Souls of Pokemon.

And now i hear you say "why dont you catch other pokemon to even things out?" The problem with that is Johto selection of pokemon is fucking garbage.
