EDIT: some more info from the Z-A website:
new map of Lumiose with terrible resolution, this is ripped directly from the site and yet zooming in is still all blurry lol. Almost every single person is brown, so it's very accurate to modern Paris1740667221556.png
>takes place in a past age of urban redevelopment
>full of brown NPCs
>present-day X & Y has little to no actual brown people living in Lumiose

What did Game Freak mean by this?

Somehow I don’t think needing to pay for a thing that majority of people that own a Switch or play Pokemon already pay for will be a problem.
Are we doing this tired argument again?
Point is that the base content without online play will probably be shit and lacking, therefore forcing users to pay a monthly subscription to play + cost of games + HOME subscription...that is assuming the game has ANY offline content at all.
Then you have Showdown, that is free and requires no Pokemon games to be owned to create your own team.

Well, here is the image we've been waiting for all day
Round_2.png
Today is the day that Nikki Minaj's ass was proven to be real

I finally caught Articuno in FRR. I've met several but they just take too many Pokeballs to catch, I am all out. Now I am in a predicament, as I just met and KOed a random Suicune in the same cave. May appears in this hack to give out hints as to which legendary Pokemon is around. In Seafoam, the hint is "Where frost and water meet", so that would imply Suicune and Articuno. Pokedex shows "Area Unknown", however, and originally the three dogs are roaming, meaning if you KOed them that' that, they're gone. Worse yet, a source is telling me that there is Regirock here not Suicune, altho I haven't met one and it doesn't make much sense with the hint. Anyone here experienced with FRLG romhacking? Any way to open that sucker up and see what the encounter table per area is directly? Normally I would go for a guide, but I guess this hack is too simple and obscure to have one.
I've confirmed that Suicune is supposed to be there btw. Regirock is in Diglett's Tunnel, and is my next target once I catch Suicune. So glad that the roaming dogs don't show up, not only are they weak as sin thanks to an IV bug but they also disappear forever if you either KO them or one of them uses Roar. Legendaries so far are level 50 where as the highest level of a normal encounter in Seafoam Islands is about 32, meaning that a lv33 with Repels can easily hunt for unlimited amount of legendaries. Like I said, the only real limiter is the amount of balls I am wasting, often times having to grind trainers around the area to buy more. Thankfully, I got an Amulet Coin just now so grinding will be much easier.

I have unfortunate news for you

I fucked up, it's almost certainly set in the present-day or near future.

Why did you use a beta Arceus screenshot?
The catch chance reticle is in the final, with green being a good chance, yellow iffy, red unable.
I couldn't find any other screenshots specifically showing the reticle and I was in a rush. Would've searched for longer but I had like 3 minutes.

anyways, I'm a lot angrier over this than I was on announcement lol. It took about five minutes of analyzing trailer footage and thinking about what I was expecting to continue being confused while also being infuriatingly disappointed. This is another retarded subversion of expectations that is ALMOST CERTAINLY worse than what basically everyone expected, which was the following:
  • 1800s setting involving a pokemon parallel to Haussman’s renovation of Paris and Legends Arceus's Meiji Restoration
  • emphasis on town-building elements that were slightly present in PLA to this end; you are some kind of higher-up who's helping plan the city, go out into the less developed parts of the city and find materials for your buildings (because video game)
  • pokemon all over the city in catacombs, in rivers, on the street-- could make living there outright dangerous, hence the need for redevelopment
  • Snivy/Torchic/Piplup trio due to extremely obvious thematic connections:
  • Snivy: literally designed to represent a French character from a French light novel set in a similar time period, also has Fleur de Lis everywhere on its design and was prominently featured in several parts of Kalos (the region being tackled)
  • Torchic: evolves into a rooster (the national animal of the damn nation) and was also given a lot of spotlight in the original games, being the only Hoenn starter to get a mega before ORAS as well as distributed as a pre-order bonus and having a prominent role in the anime
  • Piplup: LITERALLY NAPOLEON and sells gangbusters in merch so it'd be a great money-maker
  • I know some people expected Scorbunny due to an annual calendar highlighting Scorbunny over Torchic and some soccer association being French, but frankly I never thought it had much of a chance due to being very new.
  • Zygarde is involved in the plot because you're actively disrupting the balance between nature and humanity, and the plot could work around that
From what I understand this was the basic consensus from the word "go", and I would have rather played something like this a thousand times over whatever Z-A is supposed to be doing. The more I think about it the less I like it, to the point where it's kind of made me just stop caring about the franchise lol. It's clear that the series I actually liked was dead from the dex cut (more arguably since ORAS) and Ohmori's going to run this sucker into the ground until there's nothing left, so I may as well not bother with anything new and just focus on the old if I'm ever gonna think about this franchise again. Legends Arceus was clearly just a fluke, and Z-A absolutely reeks of Team A intervening and making everything lame and gay, so unless Gen 10 is by some miracle helmed by Team B and actually turns out to be palatable I'll probably start making a genuine effort to just move on from this shit lol.

I've felt like ever since PLA they've wanted to ditch the traditional battle system but couldn't because it would piss off the VGCfags so their solution is this "official Showdown" with Champions. Now the games can use different battle systems and the VGCfags can use Champions instead. Either that or Legends just always has weird battle systems and the next Non-Legends game will go back to basics. Either way, I'm looking forward to using my Gen 1, 2 and other old gen mons on Champions and Legends Z-A

The problem is if you ditch the core gameplay..you end up like Final Fantasy which has completely fucking lost it's identity after 10 and has become The Catgirl Tranny MMO and Devil May Cry except for Fujos.

Pokémon also has a unique problem in that it has a lot of indie games outright copying its core gameplay loop, so if you remove that shit from the series entirely people will just start boosting some indie garbage that looks vaguely like Pokémon and people (who have sentience, I'm not talking about normal consoomers) will flock to that game instead. Look at what happened when Palworld stole that loop and rode the coattails of a godawful 2000s meme at a time when mainline Pokémon was having its third or fourth major controversy in a row. A fucking shovelware title became one of the fastest-selling games on Steam and people still talk about it like it's an actual game instead of a scam like the rest of that studio's slop is.

no, they're about equal. The fact that I can even say this without there being immediate and obvious proof against such a statement depresses me to no end.
Wrong, sales show that people would rather play a Pokemon knock off rather than the real games. The only ones who still buy Pokemon titles on the Switch or whale for mobile are low impulse control paypigs that will never leave no matter how much they are abused, everyone else has moved on.

no kidding dumbass, I was talking about quality. That's what I've been ranting about all day lol. Besides, you're not even right on that front. Scarlet and Violet have nearly outsold fucking Red and Blue, they've moved 27 million copies. Palworld has moved 15 million at the absolute most (that's the only statistic I can find for actual sold copies. They're claiming more players elsewhere, but I can't find a scrap of info that confirms it), which while extremely impressive for, again, literal actual shovelware without an official branding in this day and age, is still barely more than half of SV's sales. A good majority still prefer Pokémon enough.

I wouldn't categorize those who paid for SV as "people". Again, they are human equivalent of a free bingo square, they will always give Gamefreak money no matter what. The fact that Palworld(superior game btw) was able to move so many units AND make TPCi shit themselves in fear shows us that people are ready for a competitor. This is a good start, I am looking forward to others.

on a different topic:
1740697396625.png 1740697755869.png
Z-A on the left, SV on the right. They have had at least three years of active development and have actively gone backwards in modeling and texturing the Pokémon themselves by almost every single metric. HOW DO YOU MANAGE THAT.

  • Chikorita has lost the upper lip that made its mouth look like a mouth and not a sticker
  • It has also lost all of its skin texture
  • Its eyes are no longer indented or shaded, once again leading to looking like a sticker
  • It's so saturated you can barely make out where the scleras end and the skin begins
  • Mega Lucario has similarly lost all of SV Lucario's metallic texturing,
  • as well as the fur texturing,
  • any shading on the eyes,
  • and the indentation that actually made them look like eyes.

I can't even claim that this is good for unifying the aesthetics like I wanted to, because look at that fucking fountain compared to Chikorita. Look at the tiles underneath Mega Lucario. This game is having the opposite problem of SV, where the textures on the buildings actually look so much better than the ones on the Pokémon that it's distracting.

I think that's all the ranting I'm going to do for today done though, I am so exhausted it's not even funny. I already had a year to stop caring about this game and haven't got enough energy to change that for the following year. Guess I'll just go find something else to play lol

The best bit is they picked Tepig as the Fire Starter.

They looked at the game with two French themed Pokemon and picked the one that wasn’t.
DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND THAT THEY MUST SUBVERT EXPECTATIONS
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT NOBODY SEES IT COMING

I hate this fucking trend so much I'm sorry lol
seriously though it's so dumb. I hope this overwhelming age of irony gets a sincere backlash sooner rather than later.

edit lmao look at how well the new trio is being received

I think this is the first main-series Pokemon game I will skip completely. I have them all R/B/Y through S/V, but nothing about this presentation compels me to get this one.

I was hoping for a massive region, and taking Legends Arceus and make it bigger and better. But it's just a city now. There's nothing special there. One city that we already know from X/Y, instead of a region to explore. That was really disappointing. Also, maybe I'm the only one who had a problem with this, but I hate that AZ and Floette are just like normal characters now. While the story of X/Y wasn't as good as Gen 5, I really liked the AZ story and character arc he had, and ending his story and appearances right after the reunion with Floette was perfect. Now that feels a lot less special.

Rather than clog up the post with my grievances with Game Freak and their treatment of the franchise since the Switch, I'm just going to skip this one. It's like, would I rather play this (what looks like generic urban city simulator with Pokemon), or one of the DS era games again. The choice is easy.

The water starter is almost always the best.
