Is it an unpopular opinion to prefer more fantasy designs in Pokemon and humans than the “grounded realism” old school fans sperg about? The older designs for humans and Pokemon are boring as hell. When I got older I started losing interest in grounded shit and started craving more interesting and weird designs now that graphical limitations aren’t as much of a thing anymore. Even though I’m an older fan who was here from the very beginning I lack the nostalgia and attachment towards old school things.

Also to me Pokemon should be monsters instead of just animals. And monsters that aren’t just creatures with claws and fangs but a whole diverse array of cute, fierce, ugly, simple, complex, etc. Even furbait Pokemon are still considered monsters to me. I know about the origins and the lore book of gen 1 but it just seems too bland for my tastes.

Sorry for sounding autistic it’s too early in the morning and I am super sleep deprived.

I don't think it's an unpopular opinion, but I do think it's the less vocal opinion. The squeaky wheel gets the oil, or in this case, the attention online. People complain about recent Pokemon designs online, but Pokemon's still just as popular of a game, so obviously people still enjoy the recent designs.

Personally I never thought Pokemon were grounded in reality, despite whatever the original intention was, and that's caused a few autistic tangents from me. They're larger than most animals (One of the smallest Pokemon, Joltik, a literal tick, is the size of a tarantula), but lighter as well (Groudon, one of the heaviest Pokemon, weighs less than an elephant). They're pocket monsters, fine, but they're hardly monsters at all, they were all designed to be giant stuffed animals that you could fit in your pocket.

As time's gone on, I've still played the Pokemon games, but I've enjoyed the concept less and less, and cared less and less about the new Pokemon, or even the old designs. I haven't played any monster tamer games that compare, other than Digimon Cyber Sleuth, and that's a pretty good game. Yokai Watch seems neat, but way too chibi-fied. I'm looking forward to Legends, but I wouldn't say I'm excited for it, despite Sinnoh being my favorite region.

Got off track there, you're not alone in enjoying the more outlandish Pokemon designs in any case. I'm not that interested in them, but again, if I wanted more grounded/realistic Pokemon designs, I'd look for another game with a more realistic baseline, because Pokemon was never made for that.

I'll give the response you're looking for and say I feel the same way.

Like I said earlier in this thread, there isn't a single pokemon designs I seriously disliked (the only one to come close was Incineroar and even then I find his child-friendly wrestler aesthetic to be oddly cute). I can see the appeal in all of them, even the less popular ones.

I know with me, I really like the dopier looking pokemon like stunfisk and alolan exeggutor among others. You know, the ones that these people tend to complain about the most. Also, I find the inanimate object Pokemon pretty nice too.
