The lack of characters designed by Ken Sugimori this time around is really weird. The characters not looking like Pokemon characters really takes some getting used to. Little things bug me, like changing how names are (selectively) displayed. Fuckhead the Janny, for instance. But, Pokemon Trainer and Hitchhiker still come before the name. The school setting is just diet Persona, right down to classes and tests. I can get why JRPGs that don't sell gangbusters took a page out of that formula, but Pokemon really didn't have to. Stakes feel pretty low overall here too. The villain teams just kinda get lamer and lamer and stop being real threats after Team Flare for some reason. Badges beimng required to make all Pokemon obey and not just traded ones is kinda lame. Makes me feel kinda pressed to get the Gyms out of the way so I can level up without worry.
Overall though, I'm liking the game a lot more than I expected to. Exploration and movement is pretty fun. There's a good amount of variety of Pokemon. I like the attempt at non-linearity. They should've made gyms/Titans/Team Star scale in level to you to really go all in on that., but it's nice to be able to just fuck off and go wherever. Terastalizing, while retarded looking, is actually a pretty fun mechanic. Not quite as cool as Mega Evolutions were, but being able to potentially change types adds a lot to shake things up. The music is pretty good, but most of the games have good music. Aside from that Toby Fox one. Can't say I'm a fan of his musical stylings.
Pretty good overall. Should have had another couple months in the oven for some bug fixes and whatever. I'd say a solid 6/10, could definitely have skewed higher if the game didn't crash on me a couple of times.
