I was just reading a few pages in this thread. I’m a gen 1 person, though I’ve played and beaten Crystal, Platinum and White. I would like to see them market a stripped down new entry to the series that is built on the same engine as the OG red/blue/green games. Kind of like what Mega Man 9 and 10 accomplished.

Something about the old GB game is more fun, to me. I guess because I’m old. My son likes Gen 4 only. I tried to get him to play Blue/Red but he refused it.

On a side note, I had no idea how useless Bulbapedia was. You'll have 15 paragraphs on whether a given Pokemon takes shits on Sundays but the move list is way down the page.
I was just thinking last night while reading Bulbapedia that they are leaving a huge opening for a competitor by not having a section on builds and strategy for each Pokemon. The backend discussions alone would be very interesting. Plus it would probably increase ad revenue.

Agreed. And they could rebuild and streamline some of their engine as well. Playing Sword right now is a chore as I have to wait on what is obviously a Game Boy-era engine to inefficiently tell me what moves are happening and how status effects are being applied. I think at this point the only way to fix that is to dumb the whole series down again and rebuild.

Double posting because I am confused.

I am nearing the end of Sword. Just got to Rose Tower and I think the game is doing the thing I hate most about shitty storylines. Who the fuck are these Ruth's Chris employees that showed up out of nowhere? Am I supposed to know who any of these people are and who they work for? What is going on??

Nope, it’s just as terrible as you think it is.

From hearing a friend talk about it - look, I’ve never finished Shield, mostly because the best part of that game was the Wild Area and I mostly dicked around there until I got bored - the entire End Game Story for Gen 8 kinda comes outta nowhere, especially since this Gen was arguably the most Gym Challenge focused Gen.

It’s almost like they got to the ending then realized “oh shit, we never had a villain encounter lead to a legendary!”, and because Team Yell were glorified Football Hooligans they did an asspull with Rose. It didn’t help that most of the plot happened off screen - Pokémon is a series that I feel can get away with that and have us just focus on the Gyms, but the execution was about par for the course with Modern Gamefreak…

Just finished Sword. Holy shit were they drunk? This series is entirely hollowed out and run through.

The whole game was sort of bland and felt like it was made by people that don't play any other video games. They left a lot of potential on the table with this one.

some article kinda talked about swsh's development that is making the rounds with translation
[Iwao] gave higher positions to the younger staff members who had the ability and motivation to take on the responsibility, which gave them opportunities to grow and learn. The staff should not only have the ability to carry out the tasks placed in front of them, but communicate and build rapport with other team members in the process – a project like Pokemon cannot be made by an individual.
When asked how the younger staff performed, Iwao felt the lack of knowledge and experience sometimes showed through the project. Young staff got stuck on numerous occasions and received lots of advice from the more experienced staff members. They struggled, but eventually made it through with the help of more experienced staff.

It has always been a tradition at Game Freak to give opportunities to the youth. Even for Omori, he was chosen as the planning leader for Pokemon Diamond and Pearl when he was 25, while all other staff were more experienced members. The organization often changes with every game title, which is another thing that makes Game Freak so unique.
>Assign "younger" inexperienced people to handle a top IP
>game turns to shit due to inexperienced people "struggling"

<but muh Diamond and Pearl!!!
Just because by some fucking miracle it worked once (and even then that's debatable), doesn't mean it's always going to work every time you do it. This is the Capcom issue with Street Fighter 3 all over again.

Something like Pokemon should ALWAYS be handled with the utmost care and importance. There should be more experienced people than inexperienced people taking the charge and handling the heavy lifting, leaving the new younger guys to do other shit that's not so important.

Sword and Shield left much to be desired, but I have to say, I still prefer them over whatever was going on with SM and USUM. At least SwSh was a coherent stream of wasted potential instead of being a messy patchwork quilt of shitty unfinished ideas thrown into the room.

Fuck. Pay me 70 grand a year, let me playtest your work and I will tell you what you need to do to make a killer game. It's a bargain.

Why should they pay a play tester when these companies are having people do it for free OR getting people to pay them to beta test?
Because I know good games and would be there to do a job, not to cream myself over the job title and brag about it on social media.

Okay, I forgot one very minor and easily missable moment of foreshadowing in SwSh. One of the Poké Jobs mentions Macro Cosmos and makes it clear that it’s an energy company. That’s all you get though.
BTW make sure to do the postgame, it’s equally dumb.

They could've just asked Bioware how it might turn out.

Even in the good era of BioWare, it would’ve been bad if they didn’t care.

Same here. I love their remakes but the original Gen 2 games will always be more fun to me because they're the first set of games I ever owned. It's thanks to them that I have a love of retro video games. Are they better than later games? No, of course not, but they're comfy as fuck and the perfect thing to play if you're not able to sleep on a really hot summer night and want to relive the days you had during summer vacation as a kid.

There is a lot more exploration and stuff to see. The newer games somehow became more linear to the point that finding items is boring.
