The lack of wrecking innocent woodland creatures with the dark god that my 10-year-old character has enslaved and confined in a ball on his belt is putting this in no-sale territory for me. If they'd done a legit remake of Yellow with modern console graphics I'd've thrown money at them, but ripping out most of the fighting and replacing it with Pokemon Go's stupid catch mechanic... eh.
Yeah. I suddenly stopped giving a shit about this game when I saw the emphasis on PGO shit.

Give me a new Mystery Dungeon game over this.

"haha Kanto"

At least they're working on releasing Gen 8 next year.

Again I'm gonna check TCRF for more little nuggets, because why wouldn't there be? Like, whats inside those pyramids, how does Water Sport work as an HM, movesets and cries of each Pokemon.

It might have supposed to have been a Demo, but this... just kinda feels complete. Keep in mind the games weren't anywhere close to being localized and available in America yet. Evidently, a lot would have been needed to be altered.

The Pokémon GO mechanic's iffy, I agree, but I won't lie, the return of Pokémon following you around won me over because that was always the best goddamn feature ever in Pokémon, but even better is the co-op, like that was something I was secretly hoping for one day. It looks like it's only just two players at a time, but if it was ever possible to get a bigger group to travel and battle with and stuff (I have no idea if the fan-made MMO ever did this, never tried it out for myself), this would be the first time my brothers and I get to have a Pokémon journey together, as in developing our own teams and teamwork and shit at the same time as well as fighting over who gets to catch what. I still remember the three of us having a "race" to see who got to finish Ruby/Sapphire first because it was the first (and only) time we got to start a fresh game at once, and while this would be more limited if you're not on separate consoles (if that's how it can also work), it sounds really similar.

Also this would be the closest to ever imitating the anime since Yellow (funny, since it's another Gen I remake and has similarities to Yellow), which holds some real strong wish fulfillment when it comes to Pokémon fans. So I'm definitely going to want to spend the holidays playing this, even if it just ends up with the three of us calling each other names and getting into squabbles because of silly shit like "That Clefairy's mine!".

While the attacks, sprites, typings, and evolution conditions were mostly fully programed, the stats, movepools, flags, scripts, trainers, music, and non-overworld maps were heavily unfinished.

Also something many people might have missed, some Kanto Pokemon also had their special attack and special defense distributed differently(Like Slowbro was Base 80 Special Attack Base 70 Special Defense since it evolved into Slowking in the beta. Since it became a branch evolution instead it ended up 100 Base Special Attack and Base 80 Special Defense. Usually for the Kanto Pokemon at least one of the two special stats was equal to their Special stat in Gen 1, Slowbro's was 80).

It's great that even in the beta Farfetch'd is still treated as a joke (Madame is a pun off of "mada mada", "still more to come" or "not yet"), and it still managed to get the short end of the stick with the evolution being removed. Of all the Pokémon that desperately needs an evolution boost, it'd be Farfetch'd alongside Dunsparce (which hadn't even been considered at the time).

So is it known how it is this beta was found and leaked online? Don't get me wrong, this is really amazing and has shed some new light on the history of the franchise, but I thought Game Freak/Nintendo is really protective of its properties no matter the version? So unless this was done from a previous/current employer with permission from Game Freak themselves, I'm honestly just baffled at where it is someone got the file from and how long this took to come out. Most of these I think were already known for a while, but were mainly snippets and through "take my word for it" rumors.

Now Weepinbell's beta split evolution makes me comfortable, something about it just looks wrong.

And Blissey's early sprite is the weirdest one I've seen in years because hurr-hurr vagina-butt-head.

From what I understand, since the demo was originally available to play at a convention, one or more of them(there was a dozen or so kiosks with the demo on it) slipped through the cracks, now the details of that are unknown, but the story of what happened next was revealed by the leakers

It ended up in the hands of a private collector in Japan that owned many beta and prototype consoles, accessories, and games(Including some developers kits and a prototype Super Gameboy that could play actual GBC games and in full color), and sometime within the last few months that collector died, most of his collection ended up in pawn shops and the 1997 Spaceworld demo was one of them. Both the shop and the people who bought it have been hidden in order to protect them from any actions taken by gamefreak or nintendo. After that it was uploaded and was originally kept secret. The group that had it planned to fully translate it into English and maybe fix it up a little, but someone outside of the group leaked it before they could surprise everyone so they showed their hand.

That project is where the English names of the Pokemon came from, they were fan-made and were meant to be as close to the original Japanese names in meaning as possible. The exceptions are Pokemon whose Japanese name is the same as one of the Pokemon in the final version, in which case it was translated into that instead. Even Pokemon that look the same like Skarmory are given a different English name because the Japanese name was different from the final version.

The Pokemon from the beta, now in Color(Only on the Super Gameboy, the demo is older than even the concept of the Gameboy Color)

God damn if this is real there were a lot of pre evolutions and evolutions of Gen 1 Pokémon there. Honestly I'm a little skeptical since a lot of these designs look really weird (like the Ditto looking blob with the spike, or that monstrous thing that looks like a mid evolution to Doduo and Dodrio, that weird ball dog thing by Houndoom), some don't fit the theme (like the one where Bayleef should have, or the pink Marill, the promo art and beta screenshots I've seen had it already being blue), designs for Pokémon that appeared in Gen IV (Lickilicky, Tangrowth, and what looks like Leafeon). Honestly a ton of these look lime really bad fakemon so I'm not too sure all of this was dumped from the demo.

This is 100% real. The demo was originally available to the public and all of the stuff that was said to be a part of it was in it. All of the content in the game matches the screenshots from both magazines and photos taken at and around the time of Spaceworld 1997. Marill originally being pink has been known about for like 20 years, the art and other screen shots you mentioned came along in 1998 and 1999, which was after this build was shown.

scroll down in both of these to find stuff, both of these pages have yet to be updated since the demo leak, they both have stuff from it

So I'm looking at some footage of the game, and the beta Hoppip had actual fucking moves and not Splash, which could've helped save it and made it a little more useful for early in the game. Which sucks 'cause I kind of like Hoppip as a Pokémon, but I'll admit that it suuuucks. :\

Meanwhile, I don't know if I should be kicking myself for not realizing the Hoppip line has feline features and just never noticed until today with the beta sprites. Kind of like how I never realized Smeargle was a beagle and just thought it was a goat 'cause I'm a dumbass.

The cat theme itself is pretty much removed in the final version outside of Hoppip's ears(Skiploom and Jumpluff have no cat traits at all). There is still some leftover stuff from the line's old theme, since in Gen II(And only Gen II), they could learn Pay Day via breeding. The move's Japanese name is "Coin for a cat", which is sort of a Japanese equivalent of the phrase "pearls before a swine"

Similar leftover stuff they forgot to remove included Umbreon's dex entries talking about it secreting venom(it was originally Poison Type), Staryu having Egg Moves and could learn attract despite being genderless (in the beta it was 50% Male 50% Female), and Ledian being known as the "Five Star" Pokemon (Its beta design has star-shaped spots on in)

That always confused me a bit as a kid because I never saw any stars on it that would've hinted at that, but as I got older I thought it was something related to "Fist of the North Star" because why the hell not lol. It's a neat title to try giving it more "oomph" (than it actually is), but God, the beta has such a stupid-looking design. It goes from being cartoony-looking ladybug to the stuff of nightmares.

Watched a little bit more footage, and I think I found my favorite beta design.

The Beauty Trainer looks really good here, like I don't mind the final version at all, but I just like everything about this design. Maybe it's because she looks a lot like the Beauty Trainer from R/B/Y or it could just be a case of dating itself, but still.

Just heard about this tonight. This is wild. Weepinbell's evolution looks ugly as sin. Goddamn is it ugly. Also, #224 Bomseel is wild. A fire/water type?!?!

Have they discovered what the order of towns? The map is a bit of a cluserfuck. I assume the town with league build is Elite 4 and end game. nvm

If this is true, I wonder if any other betas from other games will leak over time? OOT anyone?

So were the original sprites for Golbat for example. The official art likely would have looked much better. Also it was a beta so if kept it likely would have improved.

Personally I'm hoping for the Mother 3 for the n64 to still be out there somewhere. Seeing what was originally in that would be wild.

Movepools have leaked. As you can see some of the Gen 1 Pokemon have little or no difference from their Gen I moveset, and some of the Gen II Pokemon have obviously incomplete movesets.

From another source, all of the attacks that had type changes in Gen II (Karate Chop, Gust, Sand-Attack, and Bite) are still normal type, while other moves introduced in Gen II that are better versions of them(Crunch and Mud-Slap) are also normal type as well. So yes, in the beta, Faint Attack was the strongest Dark type move overall. Additionally Spikes, Sunny Day, and Rain Dance were also all Normal.

Additionally, all of the HMs except whirlpool had different moves that had identical functions on the overworld(Uproot instead of Cut, Wind Ride instead of Fly, Water Sport instead of Surf, Strong Arm instead of Strength, Bright Moss instead of Flash, Bounce instead of Waterfall)

In the end they kept HM01 to HM05 the same as Gen 1 and instead of using Bounce used Waterfall, which was Goldeen and Seaking's signature move in Gen 1.

I finally caved in and bought a Gen 1 game off the virtual console, going with Blue. Silver may have been my first pokemon game, but Blue was the one I wanted when it first came out (and I didn't have a Game Boy). Plus I still have the second half of Soul Silver to do. The nostalgia is very strong right now.

Biggest thing to watch out for for Gen 1 games:'

-Do not use any non-useless one-off TMs or Master Ball until you can use the MissingNO. glitch to clone them. For similar reasons, make sure you have at least 1 Rare Candy and PP Up not being used up.
-The game does not tell you your PC box is full until you try to catch a Pokemon when the box it full. You will have to change the box manually
-Do not ever bother using Rage and Focus Energy, they are both useless to the point of being detrimental
-On the reverse side, Hyper Beam and Blizzard are both hilariously overpowered compared to later gens.

I wanted to do things legit, so no MissingNo, but then I realized that wouldn't be the nostalgic way to do things.

Anyway, at the two hour mark looking for a Pikachu in Viridian Forest while grinding my team. Leo (Squirtle), Wind, (Pidgey), Sting (Weedle to Kakuna), Princess (Nidoran Female), Butters (Caterpie to Metapod) and Splinter (Rattata). Going to trade out either Butters or Splinter if I ever find the damn rat.

So no Mew Glitch :(?

I practically stole took over my brother's Yellow file as my own, and that was mainly because I was super excited to do the Mew Glitch as I never knew it could be done on Yellow until I saw a video of it. By then my Yellow version was long dead and gone, so that was the big thing I wanted to do.

I actually forgot how insanely overleveled the gym leaders were in Yellow. Maybe I just suck at balancing out grinding (and Gen I was awful about it), but I only remembered Sabrina having high-leveled Pokemon, not Koga or Blaine, nor even Lt. Surge, so that was a rude reawakening. That fucking Raichu...

I remember the last time I played Blue years ago (on an actual cart), I did the mew glitch and got mew. My game got minorly glitchy cause it kept trying to evolve my Pikachu I had in my party (PS, Pikachu doesn't evolve without a Thunder Stone). I don't think there was any other glitches. Never got it on camera, since it randomly did that whenever I leveled up. *sigh*
