Then learn to ignore what you dislike. I'm tired of everything needing a multi-paragraph disclaimer about how bad the fandom is. Nobody cares about some ethereal fandom you won't ever come into contact with unless you specifically seek it out.
you say that but inevitably some faggot with an undertale/MLP/Mother avatar with a pride flag background will show up with the worst opinions imaginable

I get it, fandoms are unpleasant as fuck, and it's hard to judge a work in a complete vacuum. I don't mention certain things I like IRL because I don't want to attract the type of people that are into them.

Earthbound is my favorite game and I still agree that the Mother fandom is prone to looking way too hard into elements that are actually pretty surface level. Yeah the games carry their themes and have punchy emotional moments, but sometimes a spade is just a fucking spade. Case in point, most people with a brain think the whole "Giygas is a fetus" thing is retarded considering Itoi stated in interviews that the whole fight was inspired by a traumatic incident from his childhood where he accidentally walked in on an R rated movie. There's also plenty of criticism to be levelled at the games (Earthbound's uneven difficulty and downright boring battle system, Mother 3 being very railroaded) but the high points make up for the lows for me. Same with LISA actually, to all the points above.

Just don't let garbage fandoms prevent you from trying out stuff entirely, because let's face it: in this DEI infested hellworld we find ourselves facing, good entertainment feels few and far between. Practically every franchise I liked is dead or hijacked. I don't ever want a new actual Mother entry, because sometimes dead is better.

3 kinda is a definitive "end" as well. first game giygas/giyig/giegue goes back to space vowing revenge. we find out his revenge plot in the second he ends up allying with your shit bastard neighbor and he gets reduced to a mindless mass of energy after the kid turns off the thing keeping him stable before fucking off with the time machine he stole from andonuts. he sends a letter telling ness to try and get him showing he's up to something bad still even witht he main threat gone. AND THEN MOTHER 3 HAPPENS AND WE SEE WHAT THAT IS. and that's it! No cliffhanger! Story over! (unless someone escapes but that's more than likely never gonna happen)

and that's it! No cliffhanger!
Well, kinda. The ending still baffles me. Did the world come to an end or what? It's never spelled out directly, which is certainly on purpose and arguably a good thing, but I wouldn't say it's completely wrapped up. At least not in a satisfying way.

I've toyed with the idea that

the Nowhere Islands are a kind of Magicant.

There was the dragon in Mother 1 who could easily have been the final melody the player collects before Magicant vanishes, and there were Krakens guarding Ness's Nightmare in 2 (again, right before Magicant vanishes - let's call Krakens a kind of dragon). Mother 3 doesn't have a Magicant - but it does have a world that disappears when something wakes up! And that something is another magical lizard thing which closely precede Magicant's disappearance in prior games.

Maybe it's Leder's Magicant. Or Porky's?

(Talking out my ass here. The Dragon bugs me so it's more satisfying to invent a reason it's not a completely unsatisfying plot device)

The world didn't end. The black screen dialogue after everything explodes basically spells out the fact everyone (save for some of porkys guys in that ship i guess) survived. You just don't get to see what everything looks like after the fact, possibly intentional, possibly a convenient way to save budget and dev time. Either way they're fine.
Well I mean, save for everyone porky killed indirectly...
And the guys in that ship that crashed....
and porky who's just eternally trapped in the fucking orb thinking he won, not fully aware yet that he can't get out and is gonna just shrivel up in there miserably the rest of his existence.
My point is that everyone's still alive enough and the islands are just kind of wrecked a bit due to the dragon that was under them waking up.

The dragon being woken up before porky can pull some shit with it to try and end the world is literally the main "goal" of the plot. The "it was all a dream/everyone's dead" shit you're proposing would be a more boring conclusion IMO.

Very interesting theory, actually. Too bad there's not a bit more to confirm it.

Really? It's been a long ass time so I don't remember the text, but I remember there being a pretty ominous vibe.

the "ominous vibe" is probably just the black screen due to the fact the game's kinda implying you, as in YOU just showed up last minute after shit exploded comically blundering around unable to see too well for a bit.

I can't find it isolated anymore so you'll have to deal with this timestamped lets play vid I found. Jesus christ though it's scary seeing some of these vids are 18 years old now. Doesn't feel like that long, thanks nightmare world of the last 8 years!
it does a fakeout scare of everyone possibly being dead and then goes goofy again to tell you everyone's fine.
