I don't think it was really any deeper than Shigesato Itoi, like most Japanese people, thinks okama are funny. Probably made some okama buddies or something (being the personality he is) and was inspired to use them in the game. The Magypsies come across as playful, quirky mentors with some slight innuendo due to their gender ambiguity and I think that's really it. Kind of like how he just threw in the gold mining segment into Earthbound because it was a weird, interesting thing he did and he wanted to share the experience.

Some gay thinking about maygpsies:
So now I've been at the part where I've started pulling needles.
Actually, all of them have been pulled but Locria's.
The Magypsy song was always nice and had a nostalgic sound to it, but now that they're pretty much all gone, it has a really tragic, fateful beautiful feeling to it. Very bittersweet. It definitely feels like a long, long dance of life come to an end, and like all of those highs and lows playing as their credits roll right before they go.

I do wonder what sort of happened to Fassad to have became, well, Fassad, and have drifted so much from the other maygpsies that they had no idea what even happened to him, how he ended up, changed his name, etc. And in contrast to the maygpsies who use female pronouns and are generally very androgynous, Fassad uses male pronouns and has a full mustache instead of scruff/5 o clock shadow.
And what happened to him to make him do the shit he chose to do in that game. It's strange but we'll probably never know.

Tanetane island is such a good and fucked up part of the game. There was stuff I forgot about that kind of shocked me playing back, but it's very effective, a very punchy kind of dark surrealism mixed with silly stuff. Definitely great to play with a friend. I loved the part listing all the stuff Lucas has been honestly doing but of course in a negative way. Like beating up animals in the forest, using BAD MAGIC etc. it's all so accusatory and scary.
And of course this:

That's rough stuff!
The road to get there sucked ass though, I forgot how much of a slog the ocean part was. Fuck water levels. Also the "O2 machines" are disturbing and gross.
There is an egregious amount of "fags are gross weirdos" humor in this game to the point of discomfort. Not the discomfort of being offended on behalf of gays, just discomfort of "yes I understand they are gross but I don't want to see it anymore."
I genuinely don't know how modern libs overlook this other than by "not getting the joke." Perhaps that is it.

I encountered the Negative Man and also the silver monkey thing. Kinda funny but mostly just like "oh, okay." I don't know, I might still be overleved. It went quick.

I've taken to calling the Pig army guys Pignats. I love their stupid squeal while they heil. It's too bad I can't cosplay as one. It'd be fun to be a heiling Pignat.

Anyway I'm in New Pork City now. Hell yeah boys, we are hitting the big times.
And hopefully poor Rope Snake will dig himself out of his pity party. Poor guy lol.

Oh yeah and the pig on the beach and the babushka Mr. Saturn are so cute.

This is the one that says he was dreaming of the words "Oscar" and "Meyer".

There's about over a decades worth of people cosplaying as the pigmasks at conventions lmao, maybe just a little over a decade if you count corona and politics madness eating the last 4 years.

New Pork City
I always found it funny how like only a select few buildings in that place are actual buildings. Imagine going there and thinking you're getting this cool big sprawling city and then you just are met with like ONE skyscraper, a diner, and some movie theater/arcade place with the rest of everything being just shitty cardboard and wood standees. Yeah it's cool and big still but it's hilarious how much of a fucking scam it is.

He endeared himself to Luffy because Luffy likes exceptionally weird and creepy people
The whole point with Mr. 2 specifically is even as much of a weirdo he is he's unironically an incredibly loyal friend and honestly an actually genuinely nice person at heart despite being a fucking gross looking dude at a glance. Him being involved in several criminal organizations probably doesn't help the image either. He also has possibly one of the most broken ass devil fruit powers in the way he can literally just become other people physically if he touches them and it doesn't have to be immediately after he does it. If the guy was an actual creep/evil bastard he could do so much worse shit with that than what he did.

I tried to find it on Legends of Localization but I don't know where that line came from. It's something that if it was in the Japanese version it would be taken out in Westernized releases, as Nintendo tried to avoid potential trademark issues, so the truck in Onett got changed to less resemble the Coca-Cola logo, and the Runaway Five became less like the Blues Brothers even though they clearly weren't. (The line "It's my very own hand-made band-aid! I know, I'll call it a Hand-aid!" slipped by, if they were aware of how fiercely Johnson & Johnson protected the Band-Aid trademark that would've been scrubbed, and STILL managed to get through rereleases).

However, the problem with the Oscar Mayer line is it isn't a brand anyone would be familiar with in Japan, it's only in North America, owned by Kraft Foods at the time of the translation's release. (Britain has a foods company called Oscar Mayer but it's got a different logo and different function, though the history of the company suggests that they were linked to the American company at one time). Obviously it wouldn't exist in an official Nintendo translation, was it just a different meat company in Japan and then localized to be more familiar?

Note how Earthbound/Mother players don't play the game, they just obsess over shitty pointless "muh japanese culture" shit. IE, your textbook useless weaboo hipsters.

Actually go to Japan for a day so you'd realize it's not some magical place where the universe gets saved every day by the same group of stupid kids in every japanese video game or anime.

Some of us just like a video game. Without being a deranged weeb about it.

Shocking, I know.

The Mother 3 localization is all fan made and none of it is official, so they don't have to worry about trademark at all.
Well yes, my question is what the original Japanese joke was because it wasn't that.

even though they clearly weren't
They're a blatant blues bros. reference even with the name and sprite color change in the US release. Their name in the OG japanese one literally translates to "runaway brothers' because these games are the most american shit despite being made in japan (which makes sense cause the games take place in america save for the third one) and almost everything in them is some kinda US media reference save for some small bits like puns that don't carry across languages. Giving one of them a mustache and them having names that aren't the same but still clearly a reference should have been safe enough but for whatever reason they thought it had to be changed lmao.
Anyways I'm guessing the pig joke was probably originally some other brand?

I"m gonna keep praying till the country of Japan stops being inexplicably inside the country that is the United states of America.

a) you misspelled Weeaboo

b) I've beaten all three titles at least twice (3 at least 4 times in the last 15 years)

c) no shit japan isn't like that.

d) you're a loathsome cocksucker

I routinely replay Earthbound every year for the past 8 years
this might be hard to believe but there are people who actually think it's just a fun good game at the end of the day

Haven't played since the fan translation came out but the game has never left my memory, in big part thanks to the soundtrack.
I think the only one I've played more than once is M2/EB, just because it came out on the Wii U VC years after I played it on emulator.

I'll admit the constant, incessant hooting and hollering from Mother fans, and by extension the faggotry of Undertale, Homestuck, YIIK etc it spawned has eroded any interest I may have had in the series.

Oh, also fuck the LISA series, shit skeeves me out for some reason beyond it just being misery porn

Not surprised the gossiping women of Kiwifarms can't enjoy something because "the fanbase".
>look up [thing]

if this were pre 2004 you'd have a point, but nothing exists in a vacuum any more. I'm not griefing about Mother as a reflection on you, just giving my reasons as to why I'm soured on it. For example, I liked Undertale when it first released and Homestuck up to act 5, but now all I can think of when I hear about them is the tumors that metastasized out of them ("we've been good", Yiffy/canon dog penis, etc.)

It's not peer pressure or gossiping, our memories have a cumulative effect on our opinions—for the same reason you can grow to hate a family member despite having some good memories in the distant past, or growing a distaste for a food you liked after eating it while sick and subsequently vomiting.

4 hour video essay cancer and all the other shit was WAAAAAAY after 2004 lmao. Fuck I just realized in a few years it's gonna be 20 years since mother 3 came out (2006), doesn't feel like it and it's once again freaking me out. OWS fall and the rise of cultural stagnation/ progstack cancer we've put up with the last decade was 12 years ago now which is also fucking me up because I'm in the same shitty stagnant situation I was in back then but more miserable because time just bled out for me. Maybe that's why I can't just let people that destroy/taint the things I like stop me from fondly remembering the things.

A non videogame example would be George Lucas' movies he was putting out before he sold everything he owned to Disney. Star Wars Prequel movies and Kingdom of the crystal skull were very flawed but had good/enjoyable bits and they really shine through years later because there was a clear vision rather than just "Ah yes representation! Augh yeah, this will anger the bad old fans/satiate people calling for my head!!" No, it was just an attempt at making more of something people liked.

I mean yeah, that was hyperbolic, but that's about the time the whole fandom thing started to take root, then around 2012 with Tumblr exploding in popularity that too mutated the concept of "enjoying things on the internet". But this isn't really the thread to be discussing that brand of insanity, I'll admit.

Then learn to ignore what you dislike. I'm tired of everything needing a multi-paragraph disclaimer about how bad the fandom is. Nobody cares about some ethereal fandom you won't ever come into contact with unless you specifically seek it out.
