If I didn't have shitty third world data-capped Internet because living in the middle of Buttfuck Nowhere, I'd set up my own 24/7 Soulseek machine again. Maybe I should stop being Jewish and fork out for Starlink.
my sister has starlink and it seems to work fine for them, however her husband had to get a vpn in order to get a static ip address because I guess it gets shared or something?

Starlink was impressively fast and reliable when I used it for about a year before this podunk town here finally got fiber internet. Low latency (sub-50ms IIRC), 500mbit/sec down and at least 125mbps up minimum, but usually higher, no caps. Installation was trivial. Highly recommended.

We had it at a family reunion and it was really good. Good speeds, latency wasn't totally horrible (my feeding in dota that trip was not due to latency or lag) and it just worked.

Yeah I was shocked at how fast and easy setup was. The panel senses its orientation and position and literally shows you in the app (in real time) which way to turn it to maximize signal, and it's not anywhere near as picky as fucking DirecTV satellite service was (that shit had to be nailed down to the tenth of a degree; Starlink's happy with being up to about 5 degrees off-axis in either direction or more, and still works even if you're "off", just slower). It provides its own Wifi access point and a wired port if you want it to just be a dumb modem and provide your own network management. It's genuinely impressive technology.

When using a VPN for torrenting is port forwarding a must for torrenting shows or can you usually get away without it if there's a decent amount of seeders? A budget VPN I wanted to go with doesn't have port forwarding but it's decently priced

It will improve your connectivity and allow you to seed better.

I'm not planning on seeding because my shitty ISP has a monthly data cap unfortunately
If not planning on seeding, do you plan to make use of the VPN outside of torrenting? You could just get a debrid service that supports torrents like Real Debrid (French, cucked, heavily filtered currently) or Torbox (not French, probably still cucked) that you treat like a poor man's seedbox, then direct download from their servers.

I never heard of that before ill take a look into debrid services. Thanks for the info

I'm pretty tech illiterate when it comes to security, just wondering if my VPN is enough to keep from getting those letters in the mail about downloading stuff
the worst you'll get is someone sending you a rude message in the messaging system built into soulseek, but those are easy to ignore

I don't think any American ISPs actively monitor home internet connections, and only respond/react to DMCA takedown requests. The copyright cartel relies on a handful of mercenary companies to "hunt down those dang dirty pirates" and not one of them gives a shit about the "alternative" sharing methods. They're all 100% focused on torrents and (to a much lesser extent) those obnoxious file sharing/hosting services with the retarded "Click to Download [bullshit animated fake delay while we 'scan' your file, by the way this goes away if you buy our $10/mo. service] Your download is ready, click here [but not here] to start your download after this message from our sponsor" bullshit.

They don't know or care about Soulseek. They're generally really bad at actually finding and attacking individual downloaders (still) -- even just using a "known IP enforcement torrent client blocklist" and updating it once a month is enough to keep you from being targeted (and also improves network health and speeds up your transfers because those blocklists block -- in addition to industry snoops looking for people sharing "infringing" stuff -- clients that connect to spoof and disrupt transfers and ruin torrents).

I don't think they bother targeting anything besides torrents now. Otherwise the Usenet providers would have been eating endless complaints, takedown demands and litigation over the years, and I haven't seen any attempt by the cartel to attack those providers at all. Almost like they know better than to start sniffing around the old guard's defenses lest they invoke ancient wizards they can't possibly defeat.

Help finding a semi-secret website for network appliance pirating?

I KNOW the damn place exists because it did until very recently, but I lost the link and my Googlefu is failing badly.

All I remember is that the landing page requires a password which is revealed by activating Dev Tools on your browser because it's right there in the source. And once you logged in there was a damn treasure trove of firmware, IOS/ASA images, documentation and all kinds of specialized software that the corporations lock behind subscription and contracts to even download for something that's been 10 years out of production.

(((Rightsholders))) only care about the rights of their big budget televisual, cinematic and/or musical goyslop being pirated.

Like they give a fuck about a bunch of music nerds sharing 24/192 FLAC rips of rare 1970s Sub-Sahara African psych rock or a 17 hour set some Moldovan electro swing DJ did in 2013.

I think Soulseek will be fine for the foreseeable.
