For travel purposes I prefer CoreELEC-compatible SBCs. CoreELEC is "just enough OS to run Kodi," Linux-based under the hood.
I've had enough "Not Pi" ARM stuff. Obviously the Amlogics are better supported than most. But the trail of Chinese ARM shit I've bought that never quite worked well is long and varied. Lately the Rock 5b and the Orion O6n. "Oh, you want a kernel from the 2020s? Oh, you want video acceleration?"
Ooo, shiny, the Odroid H5 looks very nice. A little chunky at 120mm square. Now I have to refrain from buying it to replace the LattePanda 3 Delta in my retro system. Of course, it's $230 with 0 ram. So to add 32GB is another $400 or so.

Hardkernel models run mainline kernels. Video acceleration is routinely standard and functional out-of-the-box. They open-source their patches and updates regularly, including FFMPEG-compatible hardware H.265 encoding support on hardware that can do it. They've been at this for years, and don't abandon their stuff like the chinkshit vendors do.

lol that's an intel chipset, of course it's going to be overpriced :story:

I did it, everyone! I filled my first hard drive:

Starting new job tomorrow. Gotta wait until 1st paycheck to get another one.

Finally homebrewed my bing bing wahoo switch because the mother wanted Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2. As always all game console that we use in the family regularly end up "hacked" one way or another because fuck paying so much money to play lmao.

Piracy and me is a long story, started when I was a kid and got a R4 ❤️

I bought a used Switch for the purpose of hacking it and pirating everything. It's nuts that they're still releasing games for it, but hey I won't complain.

Any particular resources you guys are using for downloading music ? Usually I don't have to much issues finding stuff but trying to find a couple of Jazz discographies has proven a bit more difficult. The usual stuff like piratebay or rutracker have only a couple of albums and/or are incomplete. I am not part of any private trackers which might explain why I can't find stuff.

Soulseek, or something from here https://fmhy.net/audio#audio-ripping-sites

Soulseek + Lidarr + Soularr

I usually use Soulseek just for a couple of individual albums otherwise you start getting the automated messages from some twat that you are downloading too much. But I will check fmhy. Thanks, appreciate it.
Easily blocked/ignored. In fact Soulsync (which has its share of problems, including abysmally fucking awful UI performance because the dumb fuck used sqlite3 for everything, runs single-threaded, and most actions cause dozens of queries because he probably vibe-coded it all) automates many of the dumbest "reply with 'bungwipe' to prove you're human" shit some people set up on their clients.

The Raspberry Pi 5 (BCM2712) in particular bit me when I tried to set one up for media playback last year. It has a custom designed dedicated video decode block that handles exactly one codec: H.265, rated at 4K at 60 FPS. It lacks decoding hardware support for literally everything else, even H.264, and certainly also no AV1 support. 1080p 60FPS playback of H.264 chews up about 50-60% of the CPU's horsepower. AV1 was unplayable beyond about 720p unless something significant has changed on the software stack side.
I use a Pi 5 as my primary media player. Libreelec playing media from a 1tb m.2 and watching free streaming services via shit in the slyguy repository. Zero issues.

Yeah? What are the specs of the streams you're playing? Last time I tried it, it choked on AV1 even at 1080p. Maybe the codec's been improved or some bug was found and squashed. That's encouraging to hear. I'll admit I was surprised (in a bad way) how bad the performance was on the Pi 5's otherwise beefy-sounding specs.

Admittedly a lot of the streams on free services are 720p, a small handful are 1080 and seem to work fine.

Most of what I download these days is a mixture of 1080p stuff and 4k stuff when I really have to download it because there's not 1080 download available.

I was using a Pi 4 since around 2021, but had to upgrade to the 5 in the last year or so because the 4 was really starting to stutter a lot on the streaming side.

Now look, I will put this caveat here. Maybe you'll open a video encoded at 4k 60fps on a pi 4, put up a stat counter and find it's dropping a frame or two a second. I'm just saying I can't see it with my naked eyes.

Oh yeah I get that. Not saying you're lying; I'm genuinely asking, as I still have the hardware and this encourages me to crank it up and re-test it on the latest software stack. My last attempt at 4k AV1 playback couldn't even achieve 5-6 FPS. AV1 codecs are still very much in active development though (both encoders and decoders are improving year after year). It's easy to forget h.264 (and even h.265) have been around for well over a decade (two decades for h.264) and even those decoders still see improvements from time to time, either from adding support for fancy new SIMD or vector math instructions in modern CPUs or just algorithmic improvements.

AV1 is in the same boat -- Google only declared it "good enough" for general use a few years ago and rolled it out on Youtube, but even they still also encode all videos to the older VP9 to support older devices because AV1 playback wasn't well optimized back then (it's still not "perfect" -- they're mostly leaning on hardware acceleration for AV1 support for Youtube playback). They're already grinding on AV2 too but the community's nowhere near done optimizing AV1.

I'll have to dig out the beastie and give it another shot to where things stand now. I'd love to be able to put that thing back in place. Fucking Fire TV sticks have been working "well enough" but getting more irritating with every update. I'm almost to the point I'm going to block them at the firewall from talking to Amazon at all; I wouldn't be shocked if they intentionally break sideloaded apps within the next couple of years as they phase out the old Android-based Fire TV models and replace them with their new custom OS models.
