Both it and another torrent of the same film with considerably more seeders are sitting at "downloading metadata" after 7 minutes. Little globe icon in qBittorrent is green. Half a dozen other torrents downloaded and seeding just fine. I am frustration.

The only time i ever did that i got royally fucked over, both in the sense that the game was dogshit-tier and also unplayable because of the servers crashing every five minutes for weeks on end (Diablo 3 was the game). To my defense, i pre-ordered the Ultra Deluxe Goycattle 120€ physical edition about half a year before release from Amazon, only to get a mail from them like two weeks before release where they went like "Due to too many people ordering this you will get jack shit, try again a couple of months after release".
I always get the .torrent file these days because the endless "downloading Metadata" shit drove me insane. With the .torrent file i immediately can see if the shit is seeded or not, @CEO of Autism is right with stats being faked on most public trackers, doesn't even have anything to do with the site not having updated the stats yet, they are fake. I can't remember the metadata stuff being a thing when uTorrent 2.1.1 (or whatever the version number was) was the client to use back in the days.
The patrician gamer move is to wait until the game's been out a year, is no longer FOTM, and is available in a bundle that includes the base game and all published content up to that point in a ridiculously cheap "ultimate edition" bundle for $40 that's gone on a fire sale for $5.
I do that for games that get patches every couple of days and where i don't want to wait for a new pirated release to drop but i go one step further and buy a key from a keysite instead of directly from steam. Got Rogue Trader and all its DLC's for under five bucks this way when it was on sale for around 20-30 bucks on Steam last year.
If you're still seeding off your laptop, look for ones with very few seeders because you're going to be one of the slowest connections available to peers. Popular movies, tv shows, and games are all hosted on seed boxes that are going to be preferred over your connection speed. I've had some success with music on IPT but they sit on my seed box for months between activity. I have a 3.5 ratio on the Halo Soundtrack with 12 total seeders and it was freeleach.

God no, don't use Raspberry Pis for media playback. They're fucking dogshit. The chipset lacks hardware decoding for most (if not all) common codecs. Even the 5 is hot garbage for most media purposes. They're fine for the things they're well-suited at (though there are still cheaper options given their weaknesses), but media is not one of them.
Unironically, get an Onn 4K Plus ($30-$50). I know you said you don't need 4K, but it's a lot of horsepower for the price. If you really don't care about 4K and "cheap" is the order of the day, the Onn "Full HD Streaming Device" (aka their 1080p stick) is $15-$30, often going on sale for $14.88 on sale or when logged in to Walmart.com (Onn is a Walmart brand).
They're running plain Android, are Play Store "certified", support sideloading natively, can run Kodi/Jellyfin, and even the shittiest model (the 1080p stick) can reliably play 1080p 60FPS video via Wifi. They're well supported with updates, support the usual streaming apps, but also run the "home media" sidecar stack just fine too. You don't even have to root them to replace the default launcher (which gets rid of the only ads the devices display). Projectivy is the current darling of the custom launcher world.
Avoid Amazon Fire TV like the fucking plague. They aren't even Android anymore; they've baked up their own shitty clone that can't run Android apps and won't allow sideloading. And they've been slowly clamping down on the older models' willingness to run sideloaded apps with functionality disappearing after updates. I used to swear by the Fire TV Sticks ... but Amazon can't abide even a moment going by without a storefront or sales opportunity being shoved in the user's face, so they're clamping down and ruining a good thing. Dumb fucks.
