I think I overestimated this thread's familiarity with YouTube subtitles. I only took an interest in them when I found out you can mess around with fonts, colors, etc.
YouTube auto-generates subtitles for videos using speech-to-text, but they can be edited/replaced with something else.
Some people like to fuck around with default subtitles. Someone replaced the auto-generated subs in JayExci's Doctor Who video, which is 5 hours long, with a Korean translation. In order to get English subtitles, you need to have YouTube auto-translate the Korean subs to English.
YouTube rots your brain

You did, and people are fucking stupid not only in their lack of imagination or ability to stretch their comprehension to consider new possibilities, but also in their inexplicable rage in someone being interested in something they're not and daring to bring it up in a non-sequitur as you did. I thought it was funny though :)

You see a lot of this kind of reaction in the Programming Thread of all places too. Go ask how to do something interesting with some language or other, and more often than not in addition to actually-helpful replies you'll get an angry "why would you want to do that?" Well, because "fuck you, that's why." Same thing happens when you point out an existing tool can do a job better than a newer one designed for the purpose (when I pointed out recently that PostreSQL can do MongoDB's job better than MongoDB can, it quickly devolved into a "why would you ever store JSON in a database?" debate rather than a "oh hey neat, what cool shit can be done with this?"). I hate it when people think like that.

Think outside the box, people. It's fun sometimes.

I'm sorry I missed this in the programming thread, because mangling JSON with Postgres is something I've had contractual work doing in the past. You're 100% in the right here.

Any recommended sites for foreign cinema? In particular, I'm looking for torrents from the Deaf Crocodile blu-ray collection, old film noir and 20th century Eastern European cinema.

Rarelust. I will never stop advertising this site. There's tons of obscure stuff of all genres. Action, horror, porn, documentary, American, European, Asian, you name it. The only problem is that the download speeds are low for people without premium Tezfiles accounts.

Cineby will shut down on August 26.

Not entirely sure this belongs here, but I had to share it.

I've recently been reminded of both the IMDb forums (RIP) and my most treasured piece of pirated(?)/leaked media: the script to Cabin in the Woods. Some saintly being leaked the script on the IMDb forums well ahead of the film's release. I devoured that thing while eagerly awaiting the film's release. Printed out a copy so I could read it at school. Pretty sure I still have it somewhere.

Blu-Ray drive
It's best to find a 4K compatible drive. Yes, there are two differently capable Blu-Ray type of drives, one 1080p and one 4K.

ASUS BW-16D1HT (I own this one personally)

LG WH16NS40

LG Electronics WH14NS40
Update on these drives - It's basically impossible to find one now, at least in the European market and for a decent price. There are still second-hand drives available for retail but at a disgustingly high mark-up.

I paid 88 bucks for mine.

The cheapest "in stock" right now goes for 190.

LG has (somewhat) confirmed that their brand of 4K BD drives have been put on hold indefinitely. ASUS is awaiting when inventory will be available.

Funnily enough, no one can really watch his 4K blu-rays now without paying Sony, lol. Bit of a self-burn there.

What's the physical/mechanical difference between a 1080p Blu-Ray drive and a "4K" one?

Isn't Blu-Ray an optical media standard first and a video format second? Are there special "4K" discs that "1080p" drives cannot read/write for some reason? Do they have superior capacity or performance characteristics?

Not just being snarky. I'd be delighted to learn they've continued improving Blu-Ray beyond the theoretical 100GB-per-disc limit (you can technically get those mythical discs, but they're fucking expensive).

Yes.

The physical difference between the two is that a 4K BD has more layers to it which requires special software/hardware to use. A PS3 BD player is completely unable to view 4K discs. Physical media hasn't improved at all since, at least in the home-viewing department. You either need a PS5 or a specialized 4K BD player to view 4K discs.

Lovely. So what happens to all the existing Blu-Ray drives that can handle triple-layer (100GB) discs without the "4K" label? Did they just say "lol fuck all y'all, we're not making that media anymore and you can go to hell"?

It's a matter of the firmware, if you can flash your firmware to be able to read 4K discs then it works, if not, too bad! But it's indeed a matter of "lol fuck all y'all, we're not making that media anymore and you can go to hell". Maybe it's a move by Sony to have all the 4K BD-drive makers quit their operation entirely, but that's just crazy talk, right?

This video thumb made me put the channel on "Never recommend".

Half of the games on "disc" just downloaded an installer from a server anyway for the last 5 years.
Half the games I do have on Disc, I rebought on Steam because it's a PITA trying to find no-CD cracks for 20 year old games.
