I know it's old hat, but emulation on the steam deck is incredibly based. I've been replaying paper Mario TTYD on it and it's held up amazingly.

ive got some japanese players saying its japan's equivent of a crossdresser on one hand and troons saying shes got an axe wound in the other.

The remake looks like it's taking more elements from the Japanese version, hopefully they don't go full Guilty Gear and kowtow to troons by going full "twans rights". Both Vivian and Birdo being troons/crossdresssers are treated as jokes in the original Japanese versions of their games. Troons just latched onto them because they're visually appealing comfort characters.

In the Japanese original, they make sure you know that Vivian is actually a boy who calls himself a girl, Goombella is disgusted by Vivian in every version except the English script, and so on. If troons get a localization that's faithful to the Japanese version, they're gonna seethe and seethe hard.

Weirdly enough, looking back at Super Mario Party in 2018, Nintendo used male pronouns for Birdo in the European release of the game despite ignoring Birdo originally being a troon in SMB2 for the past 30 and just calling Birdo a female:

I hope they'll just do away with the gender shit entirely here and just make Vivian female.

I hope this remake will sell well so it could tell Nintendo we want more of this type of paper mario rather than another sticker star sequel. But, it does seem nintendo is very confident with this remake judging by how they showed off what most people wanted see like the turn-based battles and diverse cast of character designs. It'll be interesting to see where the series will go after this releases.
 
Iirc the dragons were also female.
Even scarier than Mimi in SPM was no doubt finding the barely alive missing wrestlers contained under a heavy block; each covered in bugs. Shit gives me the creeps to this day.
 
I've seen a lot of talk pop up about whether they will fix chapter 4 or not and I hope they will just create entirely new paths or something.
I get that walking the same path back and forth multiple times is dumb but I think placing a warp pipe at the Creepy Steeple would trivialize the chapter too much.
I'm picky here because despite its issues its my favorite chapter because of the storyline, Doo liss and the atmosphere.

Wasn't Vivian mostly a male name until fairly recently? I always figured that was part of the joke.

Mariowiki's page has some of the Japanese text and translation for them in the references section. Other pages on the localization differences, like TCRF or MushroomKingdom, seem to just focus on the first line of the Tattle. I don't see anything like what Neil's said, though. If anything, it reads like Goombella's envious.

I can see why they did it. That sidequest where you have to find the other graffiti letters (I, G, E, and R) and hit them in the right order to earn 1,488 coins was a bit on the nose.

Not to mention Mario throwing Nazi salutes all the time. I don't know how they got away with it.

Thing I appreciate most about TTYD is the subtle dig it takes at the adult fanbase.

Mario has absolutely zero luck with women his own species, and yet every non-human girl who joins the party almost immediately develops a crush on him.
 
I loved this game in my youth and am anticipating the remake with cautious optimism, with the exercised caution being more so towards current identity politics culture and how it could influence the translation of the game in English-speaking countries. Still, keeping my fingers (hesitantly) crossed.
 
should I sell my old gcn copy once I get the remake or should I hold onto it for nostalgia's sake
