It’s a wild year for gamers already boys.

Got Musk crashing out, and I really didn’t expect Asmongold would be more actively involved in it beyond the slop reaction videos. Then you got piratesoftware exponentially-ing down on not being shit, and now we got Jagex burning the last good will they had.

Seriously the past year had such let down updates, there felt like there was more non update weeks this year than before, updates being shipped broken for weeks, updates delayed, poll results taking forever to be implemented, and the whole going full commit on D.E.I.

Boy I sure do love internet video game drama, and can’t wait to see how Jagex fucks the rest of the year, because I already know the rest of Varlamore updates still won’t appease most people from what they have planned

My seemingly controversial opinion is that the obviously retarded and bad ideas here are just data points to send up to the C-suite to explain they will lose money not gain money doing shit like this, like when they ask about TH and lootboxes in each annual survey. Moreover, some of these are okay. The ability to pause membership would be nice since I like going outside for very extended periods occasionally, and seemingly everyone agrees that the bundled discounts for multiple characters is a good idea. I'd also do the "normal membership but only for OSRS" one if they did release that. But anything past "discounts for bundles," and "discounts for only playing one version of the game," is not only pushing it, there's no chance it happens.

Also, the implication in the "cheaper membership but you can't AFK as long," is pretty amusing. No, I think I will log in, do nothing for 24 minutes and 59 seconds then wiggle my mouse, thanks! Why? Just because I want to. Why do you care? Is it costing you money when I do that?

If Jagex really wanted to make a trillion dollars, they could just add a 50USD option for iOS players that automatically adds "sent from my iOS device" to the end of every message. The game could probably become totally free to play if they did that.

Hold on, I just noticed! Mod Pips?! Head of MTX during Squeal of Fortune Mod Pips?!

This whole thing reads like an abuser gaslighting their victim. "You're being irrational, you misunderstood what I was trying to do, and I wasn't doing anything wrong!"
The biggest tell is how they bring up "the randomness" and not "these are the features that should be part of the baseline membership that we want to change extra to receive".
Honestly, I'm just so fucking burnt out on every subscription service resorting to removing features and charging you to access them once again.
BWM trying to charge you monthly for heated seats. Discord locking server wide emotes behind Nitro. Streaming services trying to jam ads into the "basic" packages.

Despite what Mod MatK might think, no, players are not going to come back if this goes through. Remember, OSRS only exists because enough players left after Wilderness/Free Trade/EoC.
Yes, people resubscribe after cancelling because Jagex backed down. It's also disingenuous because cancelling the auto-renewal doesn't mean cancelling an active membership. So, fuck him.
Also, the idea that people are cancelling their auto-renewal doesn't freak them the fuck out is just bullshit. These companies plan things out years in advance and knowing there will be a lot less in the future scares them.

Onto the final stretch, pro-tip don't leave Slayer for last it fuckin sucks

Asmongold covering this is going to escalate this to the next level.

Jagex's dream is what Archeage had. To grind skills you had to buy labor points and got more labor points from being online or paying for membership. People would buy membership for each skill to minmax.

Good. As much of an idiot as Asmongold can be, at times, having someone outside of OSRS but within the MMO sphere can really help to put things in perspective.

How are they still fucking up with this?
They have still yet to fully back down from this disaster, pay close attention to the wording they use.
Exclusive Worlds and Pay-to-Win Concerns
  • We understand that exclusive worlds or other mechanics that could be perceived as pay-to-win are a major concern. We commit to ensuring that any subscription provides access to the full suite of core game content.
To the "core" game content. They have yet to define that and could twist it to mean anything within reason.
Perhaps skilling is part of the core content, but certain methods to skill aren't?
Maybe new bosses are now classified as expansion content and require "Membership Premium Deluxe" to access in the first week now?
Do I need to pay for a Quest Pass to access new quests on the day of release or quests following a certain storyline?
Ads in Membership
  • This was originally to be tested in the context of a lower cost ad-supported membership.
  • We will not include in-game advertisements in any regular paid membership.
  • While we may explore ads in Free-to-Play (F2P) as a concept in the future, there are no plans for this currently, and we will tread carefully, considering all feedback.
AFK Timers
  • Similarly, this was originally included in context of a lower cost membership option, but we will not be reducing AFK timers for any paid membership.
Again, close attention here. They're not implementing these if you're a member, but an implementation of these is still on their table for F2P players.
The ads line is especially rat-like, "any regular paid membership" hints that they've still got multiple membership tiers planned if he's specifying "regular" in that.
What’s Next?
Moving forward, we will take more time to reflect on how we explore topics like this again.
Nothing has changed. [ a ]

The whole situation is a powerful reminder of what is most important about OSRS. It’s given us valuable insights not just about subscriptions, but also into the concerns that arise when these topics aren’t handled with sufficient care. Any future proposals will be crafted with far greater consideration to ensure they align with the feedback we’ve received and the values that define our community.

Above all, we remain committed to protecting the core principles of our games.

Seriously the past year had such let down updates,

So are you just ignoring all of Varlamore 1 and 2, Curse of Arrav/Armoured Zombies/WGS/Tormented Demons, rebalancing Mining/Agility/Thieving, adding combat/elemental weakness, GotR and Todt QoL updates, Arraxor, and a really good league up until reward shop time?

Jesus christ.

Varlamore part 1 and Araxxor are the only good releases this year. (Of what you listed)

If I play Gotr it still plays the exact same as pre QoL so realistically was anything done other then you can join whenever? Haven’t done todt so can’t say but I mean it’s a 99 firemaking simulator so who cares, like fairly sure 95% of people are there exclusively just to get 99 firemaking.

Thieving and agility are already solved skills, they just keep adding more options because players keep wanting more options even though rates are worse than other options they already have/illusion of choice

WGS is the worst grandmaster quest they’ve done to date, maybe because all the other ones have something actually going on for them but WGS was boring and easy. TDS were also badly done on release (drops were shit) they would aggro randomly, they didn’t put in which areas were solo and which were multi and they evidently ended up being bugged for 3 weeks and ignored by Jagex (TDS overhead prayers weren’t working)

Leagues is just a sub pump event for Jagex it isn’t permanent in the grand scheme of things, but what are are those items you talked about so yes Jagex dropped the ball there too. And not to forget that during leagues we basically get 0 main game updates as well.

What’s so big about Curse of Arrav? Another helmet on top of the many options that already exist? Or what they’re moving the storyline forward like any game does.

It’s not always about the big updates it’s about the in between updates to fix bugs and complaints that they are aware of but not being addressed. Also a big theme of this year is the lack of QA being done at Jagex and im sure its going to get worse.

Potion storage was so broken that you could dupe items by depositing and withdrawaling potions.

Taking a break for a month or two to let this shit blow over, I'm sure enough people like me are gonna be taking a break long enough to make them backpedal. Or at least I hope so, consoomerism really is out of control with some people.

In the meantime, I decided to pick up this game: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1189290/The_Black_Grimoire_Cursebreaker/

It really does just feel like Runescape but Singleplayer, though it's definitely more on the restrained/linear side but I quite like the 4 hours I played. Seems like an enjoyable game to sate the medieval cookie clicker addiction whenever Jagex fucks up bad.

No construction type skill is an L though considering I can literally buy a house in the first village.

There's also open source 2009 era remake which you can play singleplayer. It's very easy to setup with their launcher:
Not everything is implemented obviously but there's plenty to do and fuck around with. You can set your own xp gain and it has player bots running around the world which you can turn off.
