I don't think we'll get gunko backstory soon. Unless she's just a patsy that got tricked by imu over 900 years ago. That's likely.

i've been breaking up the discussion with other videos, but I haven't been interested in elbaf since 1132. I can see where this is going with elbaf's history needing protection and how it's going to get destroyed.

Honestly, with all the things going to shit, my thing has how all of is just going on while Luffy is just…sleeping. After an argument that was going nowhere and better off being brought to an end because neither side was going to be convinced to change their mind.

my theory so far is that if she is from brooks time then maybe the place brook was from got attacked by the celestial dragons and she was taken as a slave only to run into imu at some point and beg him for freedom. this resulted in gunko becoming imus way to see the outside world. so shes "free" but also still a slave. it would fit how imu likes to let the world think everything is fine and there is nobody sitting on the empty throne when he is the one who is actually sitting there controlling everything in the shadows.

Also, I was reading the official chapter release discussion on r/OnePiece and a post said something along the lines of the use of magic being the possible source of the Ancient Giants and why the attempts to replicate them on Punk Hazard failed. Thoughts?

The real challenge is redesigning a character so that it maintains the spirit and the purpose of the character.

Vivi should not have dark skin because she is royalty and royalty, especially female royals, tended to have fairer skin than the native population.

Rebecca's whole shtick is that she dodges and parries attacks. Adding armor and weighing her down is counter-intuitive to her strategy.

I was bored, so I decided to take a look at what these.comments were saying:

We got comments giving credit to Kaido for respecting Yamato choosing to identify as a man, with one joking he draws the line with Yamato identifying as Oden.


Franky is called a trans allegory because he can change himself into whatever he wants, including an attack helicopter.

Calling Gooners upset because they’re attracted to a trans man, as well as saying “trans men can have boobs”.

Saying Oda screwed up because he gave Yamato a pretty big rack.

Completely disregarding Vivre Cards and SBS questions , in regards to not finding anything that says Yamato isn’t a man.

Says Oda and Japan in general, don’t know much about trans people in general, and the way Oda wrote Yamato as transitioning into a man to be like somebody else can come across as a transphobic view


Saying that any man who has the hots for Yamato is bisexual .


Pointing out how both the TV Tropes page for One Piece and the One Piece Wiki use “he” for Yamato, and that should settle it.


Commending how people treat being trans as no big deal, and how that openness plays into the main theme of One Piece that is freedom.

Pointing out how Yamato represents what trans people go through IRL in the sense of being oppressed and rejected (Kaido and his crew) and finding solace in those who accept you for who you want to really be (fellow samurai prisoners, Ace, and eventually Luffy and the Straw Hats).

Pointing out how anime fans refuse to accept that One Piece is woke anime because the success of OP would undermine their “go woke, go broke” view of pop culture and media.

Pointing out how Yamato is a good message in that by being a man without being able to pass for one is a message of how you don’t need to be post op to be the gender you feel you are. And saying it’s a good thing that One Piece managed to get readers to love and relate to trans/queer characters like Yamato, Ivankov, and Kiku.



I type all this to say the following: the one issue people can have with Yamato (the Oden LARP is pretty one note and gets old after a while) has become some kind of massive flashpoint that it wasn’t supposed to be.

I have to wonder if all this has made folks like Yamato LESS.
 
I like the idea behind Yamato: jackass yonko of a father who obsesses over the only man who could harm him wanted a son but got a daughter instead; and because she yearns for her father's love and respect, she decides to take on the name of that very man only to take it too far.

Problem was she came into the story late and wasn't given the time to grow likely because Onigashima was running long as-is. Oda can't help there are dumbasses out there who think everything is trans all along, but he should've really explicitly hammered it home this is a woman starved of her father's love and influence that she had to turn to the one manliest of men she knows of and thought becoming more like him would get Kaido's attention. And then make her cover story be of one where she finds her own identity instead of copying Oden's path.

to me i see yamatos whole oden LARP in the same light as how pretty much every group of slaves that shows up talks about nika. the slaves try to emulate nika to remain hopeful that someday they will be free and yamato emulates oden as a way to escape from reality. she was locked in that cave for ages with nothing but odens diary.

so becoming oden was both a way to anger kaido but also a way for her to hold onto hope that she would be free one day and get to see all the things oden talked about in his diary. living as oden now is just her version of being like nika and i imagine it will only stop when she leaves wano since that is what she was waiting for since she met ace.

So in the end, either Yamato becomes a new Straw Hat, or Yamato is a part of the final war aboard Pluton under the command of Nika/Luffy, as the mural portrays.

Nearly every arc has a moment where an old man tells the antagonist off/ gives the Straw Hats more motivation. That and a crying girl who Luffy ensures stops crying/ punches in the case of Vivi.

The Phineas Gage cosplayer is this arcs one. Vega Punk was the last one. East Blue had one almost every other arc.

if the manga was going longer i would fully expect yamato to join the crew but im suspecting bonney joins as the final straw hat if she stays around till the end of elbaf. yamatos for sure part of the final war though. cant really live like oden and let wano get destroyed. hopefully momonosuke gets better at using his dragon form too.
