There's so much news about North Korea right now and what Un is doing, I got a suggestion for a NK megathread, so here it is. Post the world's greatest nation's antics here. I'm merging a few of the more recent threads to continue discussion.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has pushed for a new plan for a rapid war with North Korea and an overhaul of the country's defense industry to overwhelm and crush the North's government, the South Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo reported Tuesday.

Moon took office in May promising to attempt to engage diplomatically with North Korea and seek peace, but in the months since, the North has provoked the international community with missile tests at a blistering pace.

For some time, South Korea has been training a "decapitation force," reportedly with the help of the US Navy's SEAL Team 6, but now an increasingly bold North Korea may demand quicker action.

South Korea's new plan identifies more than 1,000 targets for precision missile fires and sites for marines to drop in and quickly kill North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the paper reported.

The plan represents a more independent version of South Korea's current plan, which relies on support from US aircraft carriers. As it stands, no major military commander recommends military action against North Korea, which has a staggering array of conventional — and potentially nuclear — weapons pointed at Seoul, where 26 million call home.

But South Korea's new plan to quickly and decisively dominate the North relies on reforming the defense-acquisition process and cutting out wasteful spending to wield the full might of its economic dominance against Pyongyang, according to the report. For that reason, don't expect the plan to take effect anytime soon.

There's word that a nasty strain of swine fever is wreaking havoc in the Nork's pig farms and may have passed to feral hogs as well.

Supposedly, pork accounts for 80 percent of the protein in the Nork diet, which... says a lot, actually. Hogs are not the best thing to raise by their lonesome; they're brighter than your average barnyard critter, plus they're omnivorous, which means they'll compete with humans for food (and eat the humans if they're hungry).

Why the hell are the Norks not raising goats, or chickens?

Because Grorious Readah, for whatever reason, decided on pigs, so they raise pigs. It was probably with the idea that each animal has a greater return on meat, without a lot of actual logistics and running the numbers put into it.

Old shit, but everyone can have some fun.

Chinese shitposters made a graphical joke on a viral, poorly written, cheesy "Rebecca Black Friday" tier song, featuring the fatfuck dictator in a light banter.

It's said that North Korea got so triggered, they got the Chinese state to censor this video, along with terms such as 金三胖 (kim third fat), which spawned variations of the term, such as 鑫胖子 (three 金=kim stacked, Kim is the third dictator).

People made a nastier version:

At least the first one featured him beating Abbe...

It's the 25, and I'm wondering what this so-called gift is going to be. Anyone else wanna weigh their thoughts in this matter?
I have been following this rather extensively.

The USA, RoK, and Japanese military forces definitely think there will be a missile related happening.

In short, earlier there ere the following systems deployed to the theater:
  • Forward Deployed Arleigh-Burke class Destroyer with advanced SPY-1D missile tracking RADAR. (modestly rare, more rare to see forward deployed so far)
  • RC-135S Cobra Ball, A very, Very, powerful electo-optical reconnaissance aircraft (rare)
  • RC-135W Rivet Joint, A very, Very, powerful radio signals surveillance and geolocation aircraft (rare)
  • E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System, A wickedly sophisticated RADAR aircraft tuned for detecting and tracking enemy ground targets, like tanks. (rare)
  • E-737 Peace Eye, South Korean AWACS with decent missile tracking capability. (common)
  • RQ-4 Global Hawk, good-all-round recon drone with a 34+ hour endurance. (relatively uncommon, but will be more common soon)
Then of course you have the dozens of land-based RADARs.

Not only do we have one RC-135S, but apparently a second RC-135S Cobra Ball was spotted heading to the Korean Peninsula a couple of hours ago:

I should point out, we only have three of those, and they are a nightmare to keep maintained. So make of that what you will.

Point being, to see them all together, flying on the same day, should give a bit of warning about how seriously some very high ranking brass are taking this threat.

Oh, also A NOTAM has been put out by the US FAA warning airliners of possible missile launches
_
So what if anything do we expect to see the DPRK to do?

Depends on who you ask.

Case 1: Retrenchment, aka hard-lining and ending ""negotiations"". (Source: CNN's Will Ripley. A career cow, but there is some evidence to support this position)

A favored theory by the dovish faction of Korean watchers. This theory says that North Korea does not want to rankle Russia and China by testing a ICBM. The belief is that the DPRK can send enough of a message by publicly saying what they have already done: put an end to negotiations. Followed by the end of all calls to end sanctions. There is also weight put on the argument by the belief that Trump may lose the US presidential election (therefore a better/different deal could be made with the incoming administration.

I am not going to be the best evangelist for this position as I do not really believe it, but apparently there as been relatively little evidence of "signs of unusual military moves have been detected in North Korea."

Case 2: ICBM Test, non-nuclear missile test, with possible IRBM launches as well (source: well, all the previous shit. Plus some other stuff if I can be bothered)

Favored by hawkish factions. This supposition says that the DPRK has ICBMs it needs to do further testing on. That the North Korean state doesn't much care about the feelings of China and Russia (or anyone else for that matter). Additionally, "performative nationalism" is part and parcel of North Korean culture. Furthermore, what good will shouting to the world that the DPRK will not negotiate with the US or anyone else in theory, when they already don't in practice. The only real way they have to express their displeasure any louder is to light the candle.

Bottom Line: A missile test is very possible. If a test occurs it will likely be a solid fuel ICBM, but not a Nuclear test or a Space Launch Vehicle test.

Or we could have a rather boring """"""switch up"""""" in policy, and my missile boner goes flaccid.

I'd be mad if I were USFJ. The majority of them just got time off.

Well see, the thing is, I've also been hearing (through various news sources) that it could also be an attempt to send a missile over to the US. Which I highly doubt since that'd mean they'd be dead in an instant (either by the US, or by China/Russia), but Un and his brass probably wouldn't care if that happened.

Hopefully everyone got appropriate special pay for this bullshit. Merry Christmas.

If you are talking about The N. Koreans remember they are god hating commies, they only celebrate Kim Jong's bowl movements.

If you are talking about people who had to watch this shit show..they got to watch hilarity for free that is special pay enough.

Because Grorious Readah, for whatever reason, decided on pigs, so they raise pigs. It was probably with the idea that each animal has a greater return on meat, without a lot of actual logistics and running the numbers put into it.

Pigs are big big business in Asia, they were one of their first mass scale domesticated animals for raising as food, and there's a lot of cultural inertia involved. On top of that, Pigs are literal dustbins so you can just hurl bulky foods and scraps at them and they'll chow down.

You can also raise a pig for slaughter in about 20 weeks, but China's started breeding "super pigs" in their corporate farms.

The Africa Swine Fever epidemic has wiped out big numbers of the old fashioned "backyard" farmers who keep a half dozen or so pigs as an extra revenue stream, but most of the corporate farms across the region are able to isolate and purge relatively quickly.

The only incompetents who haven't been able to do this are the North Koreans, who're now enjoying infected meat in their markets and their pig farms are getting fucked hard.

So don't be surprised if in another 12 months or less we're reading about how all of North Korea's gone utterly silent as everyone dies from it jumping species.

When US armed forces are deployed, they get special pay. Imminent danger is pretty much automatic when Kim starts sperging out like this. People had to pack their gear and go out for this... again.

Interesting Article for you all.

U.S. operates at least 22 reconnaissance planes over Korean Peninsula
The U.S. is not relaxing its surveillance even after the “Christmas gift” deadline threatened by North Korea is passed. The country is carpet-bombing the Korean Peninsula with its reconnaissance resources.

The U.S. deployed its five main reconnaissance planes, such as E-8C Joint STARS, at once to the Korean Peninsula on Wednesday, which was followed by three more reconnaissance aircraft on Thursday to detect any new signs of North Korean provocations involving intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs).

According to the Aircraft Spots, a combat aircraft tracking website, first Joint STARS and later two RC-135S Cobra Balls flew from the Kadena Air Base in Okinawa to the Korean Peninsula from early morning until afternoon on Thursday. In particular, Cobra Balls, which can track the trajectories of missiles and warheads, flew to the East Sea back to back. “The U.S. is keeping an eye on the submarines and SLBM base located in Wonsan, Gangwon Province and Sinpo, Hamgyong Province 24 hours a day,” said a South Korean military source. This implies the U.S.’ forecast that North Korea is more likely to launch SLBMs than ICBMs, which will remain as the last resort.

The amount of reconnaissance resources poured in by the U.S. following the “Christmas gift” threat of North Korea is believed to be unprecedented by both military and non-military experts. The U.S. deployed at least 22 reconnaissance planes of seven different models to the Korean Peninsula since Lee Tae Sung, the vice minister of the North’s foreign ministry in charge of the U.S. affairs, said “What the Christmas gift will be depends on the U.S.’ decision.”

“Almost all reconnaissance aircraft deployed to Northeast Asia are used to surveil North Korea,” said a military source. Given that 22 reconnaissance planes are the number intentionally released by the U.S. military through the Aircraft Spots, etc. to put pressure on North Korea, the actual figure including confidential reconnaissance activities must be higher.

In other news NHK accidentally posted a false (read: template) missile splashdown report. This leads to a wave of fake news.
