There's so much news about North Korea right now and what Un is doing, I got a suggestion for a NK megathread, so here it is. Post the world's greatest nation's antics here. I'm merging a few of the more recent threads to continue discussion.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has pushed for a new plan for a rapid war with North Korea and an overhaul of the country's defense industry to overwhelm and crush the North's government, the South Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo reported Tuesday.

Moon took office in May promising to attempt to engage diplomatically with North Korea and seek peace, but in the months since, the North has provoked the international community with missile tests at a blistering pace.

For some time, South Korea has been training a "decapitation force," reportedly with the help of the US Navy's SEAL Team 6, but now an increasingly bold North Korea may demand quicker action.

South Korea's new plan identifies more than 1,000 targets for precision missile fires and sites for marines to drop in and quickly kill North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the paper reported.

The plan represents a more independent version of South Korea's current plan, which relies on support from US aircraft carriers. As it stands, no major military commander recommends military action against North Korea, which has a staggering array of conventional — and potentially nuclear — weapons pointed at Seoul, where 26 million call home.

But South Korea's new plan to quickly and decisively dominate the North relies on reforming the defense-acquisition process and cutting out wasteful spending to wield the full might of its economic dominance against Pyongyang, according to the report. For that reason, don't expect the plan to take effect anytime soon.

Rocket man is apparently threatening to call the summit off due to US-SK military exercises.

I wish I could find an actual source for this. Yonghap says that this came out of the Korean Central News Agency, but I don't see this anywhere on their site, any other aggregates for North Korean channels, and the US State Department hasn't said a word about it. Apart from Yonghap talking out of its ass, I can't find any official statement about this, and even half the fucking Yonghap articles about it are an entirely blank article.

Twitter and BNONews has the same issue, just articles without showing the actual source.

I'm torn between doubting this from the lack of a source or believing it since this is plausible from Rocketman's behaviour to tantrum out of the blue for random reasons.

On the one hand, This isn't surprising in the least (I mean Un probably has a tantrum when he doesn't fall asleep the right way). On the other, he knew for a while now, Everyone told him that "Oh, the exercises are still happening, can't cancel them now" and he still decides to throw a fit anyway.

If he does cancel, then that'll be a huge problem, since that means we'll be back to square one and will probably never leave it again until Un suffers a heart attack.

I don't understand this, why would Kim throw a bitch fit now when everything has been going well for him?
Because the exercises are happening and he needs to throw a tantrum about something.

Which is why I'm wondering why the hell didn't anyone stop this before realizing what consequences this might have had on the progress being made.

Well the South Korean Security Advisor, who speaks directly to Kim Jong Un on a routine basis, had already made it clear that Kim Jong Un knew about these exercises well before-hand and that, "He understands that the routine joint military exercises between the Republic of Korea and the United States must continue."

I've been rummaging around all day to try and find a first-hand source for this story and I'm still turning up empty even after five or six hours. I have no idea where this story is coming from, but it's not showing up in even a single first-hand channel, they all just keep getting routed back through Yonghap, which isn't citing anything useful as of yet, either.

I think someone at Yonghap wants it out on these meetings and is probably offended that Kim's agreed to them in the first place.

There's definitely something wonky about this story, and a lot of people stand a lot to gain on a domestic, political level if these talks fail, so unless I hear some very specific news from first-hand sources I'm not keen to give this story a whole lot of weight. It's profoundly strange that over six hours after this "news" broke we've still not heard from any of the sources directly involved in this. I'm just gonna' call it "general news fuckery" until I hear more about it from a reputable source that isn't blanking its goddamned websites.

(Pyongyang May 16, Chosun Central News Agency)

On June 16, the Korean Central News Agency announced the following report.

South Korean authorities have been working with the United States on a massive "2018 Max Thunder" air combat drill throughout South Korea to bolster our air strike and control over us.

The training will be conducted by the US forces under the US invasion force and the South Korean Air Force, which will involve up to 25 days of mobilization with more than 100 fighters, including the US "B-52" strategic nuclear bomber and the "F-22 Raptor" stealth fighter.

Public opinion shows that this training is the largest scale and reflects the unchanging attitude of the US and South Korea to continue "best pressures and sanctions" on us.

This training is aimed at us all over South Korea and is a deliberate challenge to the declaration of Panmunjom and is a deliberate military provocation against the trend of the well-developed Korean Peninsula.

The Panmunjom Declaration of the North and the South made a solemn declaration that a new era of peace had been held, and agreed to work together to mitigate the acute military tensions in the Korean peninsula and to substantially reduce the risk of war. .

However, the South Korean authorities and the United States responded with ridiculous provocations to all the peace-loving efforts and goodwill that we have shown so far by opening a massive air-to-air exercise against our republic before the ink of the historic 4.27 declaration dries up. And has been causing great concern and disappointment to the people and the international community who wish to make a declaration.

If the US and South Korean authorities think that the improvement of the North-South relationship and the season of seasonal conversation, which are made possible by our pragmatic and energetic efforts and measures, are the indulgences that we should be able to spread without any trial even during this war practice, there is no bigger mistake.

In particular, the South Korean authorities promise to work together with us for peace, prosperity and unification of the Korean peninsula, but also hang on to the unreasonable activities that are placed on it. Also, we invite our human dignity in the "National Assembly" It has been neglected to play a game that slander and slander the Panmunjom Declaration.

There is a degree of goodwill and there is a limit to give an opportunity.

The historic Panmunjom Declaration can not be carried out by the efforts of either party, and it can only lead to good fruits when the two parties form their own strengths and environments.

We have no choice but to take measures to suspend the high-level talks between North and South Korea, which is expected to take place on the 16th, under the harsh conditions in which South Korea's indiscriminate battles of war,

The high-level talks between North and South have been suspended, and it is the responsibility of the South Korean authorities to play with utter sophistication without any difficulties and obstacles to the North-South relationship that took the first steps.

The United States should also contemplate the fate of the reunion of the Chunmi head, which has been scheduled for the provocative military upheaval that is taking place with the South Korean authorities.

We will keep a keen eye on the future attitudes of the US and South Korean authorities. (End)

Hard to say what will happen, but until the Trump-Kim summit is actually cancelled, take the North Korean screeching about military exercises they knew about well in advance with a grain of salt.

If Kim cancels the summit over this shit, then he's a fucking idiot who deserves whatever might happen to him. And seeing how this is Kim Jong-Un we're talking about, it could happen.

That'll be a long wait.

I didn't expect this to end well, but I was maybe expecting it to be a little more exciting. These exercises, like most, were planned a couple of years in advance.

It's not like we just announced them last week.

I demand better villains.

Why are we doing military exercises at this time anyways?
We had a ton of naval resources in the area and then we pulled them all out. I believe we canceled most of our major exercises in the region but I could be mistaken. As of this morning the news was that this too was scaled back to exclude b52 drills.
Toldja. What would a NK-related deal be without Fatboy throwing a tantrum all of a sudden?

(in b4 the Chinese not-so-gently "remind" him that they're tired of his bullshit and he has to go anyway)
You must remember he lives in a weird bubble where he has to maintain a certain amount of face if he's going to see this through to it's conclusion alive. Publicly he has to seem like he's getting his way but after removing all carriers we've brought the Ronnie in for "sea trials". We have security, he's not getting pushed around, and he just has to not get killed and soon his personal wealth will exceed the current GDP of North Korea. He'll be a hero and maybe even get a McDonalds on his street.

India, bolstered by recent peace signals from North Korea, is moving to strengthen ties with the reclusive regime.

Indian Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh arrived in Pyongyang with a delegation of officials on Tuesday for a two-day stay, meeting with a host of senior officials such as Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho and Culture Minister Pak Chun Nam.

It was the first high-level visit by an Indian minister to the rogue state in nearly two decades.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reacts with scientists and technicians of the DPRK Academy of Defence Science after the test-launch of the intercontinental ballistic missile Hwasong-14 in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in Pyongyang July, 5, 2017.

"Now that the environment around North Korea is changing, India may feel like it's an opportune moment to reach out, perhaps in potential anticipation of the country opening up," said Harsh Pant, distinguished fellow and head of strategic studies at New Delhi-based think tank Observer Research Foundation.

Despite some hiccups in international efforts to restrict North Korea's nuclear weapons — Kim Jong Un's administration on Wednesday threatened to withdraw from a June 12 meeting with President Donald Trump — tensions on the Korean Peninsula have greatly subsided from last year's regular missile launches.

And now that the White House is reaching out to Kim — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over the weekend mentioned the potential for private investment in the underdeveloped state — New Delhi likely wants to follow suit.

"The visit may have been spurred by the recent developments in U.S.-North Korea relations," said Amit Cowshish, a former advisor at the Indian Ministry of Defense and current partner with law firm Dua Associates.

But that isn't to say India is looking to inject itself into nuclear negotiations.

Rather, "the purpose of the visit seems to be to explore the possibility of resetting mutual relations in the context of India's Act East policy," Cowshish stated, referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign policy initiative of warming up to Asian neighbors.

New Delhi may see this visit as a means to position itself out front should North Korea stabilize and join the international community, said Pant.

Resuming an old relationship
Before Modi suspended the bulk of bilateral trade with North Korea in 2017 amid international sanctions on the isolated nation, the two enjoyed friendly diplomatic, commercial and economic ties for decades.

"There were even reports in late 2016 and early 2017 that India was the third largest trade partner of North Korea, although these figures did not consider the substantial illicit or undeclared commerce involving China and Russia," said Dhruva Jaishankar, foreign policy fellow at Brookings India.

India also maintains an embassy in Pyongyang, resisting pressure from Washington last year to sever all links with Kim's government.

For Asia's third-largest economy, North Korea is inextricably linked to security and terror concerns around rival Pakistan, Pant explained.

Islamabad has long provided Pyongyang with nuclear technology under the network of Abdul Qadeer Khan, the father of Pakistan's nuclear program who has admitted to sharing designs with countries such as Libya, Iran and North Korea.

Okay, there's the actual, interesting news. Getting India to take a hard stance on anything that requires picking a side is like pulling teeth uphill, in the snow, both ways and with no arms. India and North Korea are agreeing to cooperate in vocational education, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, traditional medicines and... Promoting Yoga, of all things. So that's pretty interesting but hey want to see some dumb bullshit?

Check out these two headlines:

So President Trump is both intensely anxious of the meeting to the point where he's considering calling it off but he's also so confident in the meeting that he's not even rehearsing for it and just plans to play it off-the-cuff. Okay, sure. Seriously, does the media even read the horseshit that it tries to make us believe, anymore? This is just fucking lazy, made-up bullshit and they're trying to push two completely juxtaposed narratives as truth, now.

I cannot believe that these "journalists" are allowed to keep their jobs.

If they did anything related to their jobs, shit like this or the backlash against AVGN not watching a shitty movie wouldn't even be a fucking thing.

Seriously, at this point why even bother with the news if you're not going to report on it correctly or make some bullshit up? Especially when it comes to political matters like this?

I like how they actually covered this and they still didn't pick up what he was saying. He's offering to help free North Korea from China in plain, unambiguous language and even talking about how he's going to do it and how it would directly benefit Kim Jong Un, and they just brush it off entirely and don't even notice. In exchange for giving up their nuclear ambitions, North Korea could be freed from Chinese influence. It wouldn't even be that difficult for us to do, all we'd need to do is buckle down on the trade issues and China would fold by the weekend.

He's looking straight at the camera and telling all of these people exactly what he plans to do with North Korea--and doing it right as he's staring China right in the face--and they still don't hear a word of it. How is that even possible?

Uh, because Drumpf!!!! Hahahaha see what I did there. I did the German spelling of it because like, he's literally Hitler.

I need more cheap-or-free labor from those poor illegal immigrants. I don't even mind if they never learn English because I can keep paying them nice and cheap <3
