There's so much news about North Korea right now and what Un is doing, I got a suggestion for a NK megathread, so here it is. Post the world's greatest nation's antics here. I'm merging a few of the more recent threads to continue discussion.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has pushed for a new plan for a rapid war with North Korea and an overhaul of the country's defense industry to overwhelm and crush the North's government, the South Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo reported Tuesday.

Moon took office in May promising to attempt to engage diplomatically with North Korea and seek peace, but in the months since, the North has provoked the international community with missile tests at a blistering pace.

For some time, South Korea has been training a "decapitation force," reportedly with the help of the US Navy's SEAL Team 6, but now an increasingly bold North Korea may demand quicker action.

South Korea's new plan identifies more than 1,000 targets for precision missile fires and sites for marines to drop in and quickly kill North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the paper reported.

The plan represents a more independent version of South Korea's current plan, which relies on support from US aircraft carriers. As it stands, no major military commander recommends military action against North Korea, which has a staggering array of conventional — and potentially nuclear — weapons pointed at Seoul, where 26 million call home.

But South Korea's new plan to quickly and decisively dominate the North relies on reforming the defense-acquisition process and cutting out wasteful spending to wield the full might of its economic dominance against Pyongyang, according to the report. For that reason, don't expect the plan to take effect anytime soon.

People who have no understanding of the history of warfare vastly exaggerate the risk to Seoul and the death toll that a war would inflict on the south, its getting increasingly annoying seeing people in positions of power who should know better play into this fantasy.

There are well documented instances over the last century of city's being subjected to extended periods of overwhelming bombing and artillery of both the cannon and rocked verity. It never resulted in the apocalyptic scenario that the media always plays up, aside from wooden Japanese city's that we dropped fire bombs onto in WW2, and those city's weren't converted into a massive concrete shelter like Seoul is.

Short of chemical warfare (they aren't able to deliver a nuke across the border) i would be surprised if more than a few thousand SK civilians died even in the event of a surprise attack on the north's part, and that's a liberal estimate in my opinion. Even if chemical's are used it still wouldn't be anything close to what people are speculating it will be.

This part gets me:
President Trump tweeted Wednesday that talking "is not the answer" to the North Korean threat. But Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Trump's press secretary Sarah Sanders were quick not to close the door on negotiation.

Honestly, I feel that while I don't doubt that negotiation is completely off the table. Trying to talk to a country whose leader is a chubby manchild with an incredibly itchy trigger finger is almost inevitably going to end in failure.

I mean if China can't rein them in, at this point no one can.

What kind of entitled piece of white trash would think a north korean is a human?
I'd love to see one of these guys get one as a pet and feed it after midnight.
I had to look after a girlfriend's north korean once. Kept pissing on the carpet all the time and growling at me. Turned out it was surly all the time because like half its teeth were rotted from not eating the right kibble. Women don't know how to care for pets.

North Korea’s Central Court has sentenced two South Korean journalists and two media executives to death for reviewing a book that outlines a sprawling undergound capitalist economy in the secretive Communist state.

In an article on North Korean state media outlet KCNA, a spokesperson for the court said that the book—originally published in English and since translated into Korean—“insulted the dignity” of North Korea.

It declared that journalists Son Hyo Rim and Yang Ji Ho—who work for South Korean newspapers Dong-A Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo—and Kim Jae Ho and Pang Sang Hun, who serve as director general of the two titles respectively, had received a death sentence by the Central Court of the DPRK.

"The criminals hold no right to appeal and the execution will be carried out any moment and at any place without going through any additional procedures as soon as the objects are confirmed," the spokesperson said.

While North Korea singled out the conservative Dong-A and Chosunnewspapers, they weren’t the only publications that reviewed the book, which was released in South Korea earlier this month.

A spokesman of the North's Central Court said the South's largest newspaper Chosun daily and another leading newspaper Dong-A daily committed 'a crime of the gravest degree' by insulting and maligning the dignity of the country, declaring it has handed down death sentences to the two newspaper presidents, a Chosun journalist and a Dong-A journalist. Titled North Korea Confidential: Private Markets, Fashion Trends, Prison Camps, Dissenters and Defectors, the book was written in 2015 by two British journalists, Seoul-based correspondent for the Economist, Daniel Tudor, and Reuters' James Pearson. The authors claim that North Korea's attitude to capitalism is similar to Victorian Britain's approach to sex: "While everybody does it, few publicly admit to its existence."

The South Korean title mocks North Korea’s official name of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), turning it into Capitalist Republic of Korea, a capital offense in Pyongyang’s eyes.

On its cover, it features Pyongyang’s landmark Ryugyong hotel (also known as the “Hotel of Doom”) topped by a dollar sign, as three hands hold smartphones displaying a rising stock market graph.

The authors are not included in the sentence but are described by KCNA as “bums who wrote an ignominious jumble of stories told by defector scum” and that “viciously slandered the reality of the DPRK with such sophism that ‘life of the North’s citizens is capitalistic 100 percent’.”

South Korea has condemned Pyongyang for its threats to freedom of speech and said it will take appropriate measures to protect its citizens.

"North Korea's threats in response to journalists' ordinary acts of reporting constitutes a serious violation of freedom of the press and an intervention in the South's affairs," the Ministry of Unification said in a statement quoted in South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.

"This does not help an improvement in inter-Korean ties at all. We sternly warn that North Korea should end its threat to our nationals."

Look at these intellectuals in the comments section:

That last one's fucking beautiful.

"Huh, it's almost like North Koreans are actually human beings that require the same basic things that everyone requires. "

The fact that this fucktard doesn't understand the irony of his statement is astounding.
I thought the left considers Kim Jong-un a golden boy who deserves nukes for protection against us Yankee imperialists and those dang Japs (ironic considering the second username). As Trump is literally Hitler, we both deserve to perish like it's Dresden and Hiroshima again. I mean, their beloved Clintons allowed the Norks to conduct research without any consequences.

>They wanna go it alone
I hope they realize without US support before the invasion, Seoul would get artillery striked until flattened
Lolso? That'll happen anyway. South Korea can win the war on their own now. When they activate their reserves, they will have a larger armed force than North Korea. And South Korea is getting to the point of being willing to eat the casualties. The victor of the war has never been in doubt. Its more that the casualties are guaranteed to be in the millions.

So the people sentenced to death aren't even in North Korea at this point?
The whole thing is pretty pointless as this will never be executed unless they cross the border, which they won't do...
Fatty is really throwing his toys out of the pram.

honestly at the rate NK's doing stupid shit, we're gonna need a megathread for the fuckers.

Well... the (very) conservative estimates for casualties in a new Korean War put the number at around a million,

The main issue (aside from nukes) is that Seoul lies really close to the DMZ. It's essentially a hostage in the form of a city... we go in guns blazing, the Norks kill the hostage.

The economic damage from the resulting destruction would be catastrophic. Then you have the economic cost of integrating the surviving North Korean citizens into the shattered remains of South Korea. Seriously, picture Europe's refugee crisis, but with those refugees streaming into a shattered, war-torn country.

And let's not fool ourselves... the refugees probably aren't going to China... For one, China doesn't want to foot the bill for these people. They aren't going to Japan... (lol... the japs and the Korean people hate each other). They're going to go to the place with a shared(ish) history and language

But then again, I'm not really a strategist. Just an amateur observer.

As much as North Korea is a shithole, South Korea ain't looking too great when it has a newspaper called Dong-A Ilbo.
