Nolan has always jerked himself off in his films. The Prestige is about the process of filmmaking. Tenet constantly reenforced the audience to "don't try to understand it; feel it" because he knows trying to understand it isn't going to help. Memento is about the audience's point of view in regards to the plotline or perception of a film, and Leonard is a vessel to show an analogy of this. He's always talking to the audience in his films.

so he developed his own prince vs artist formerly known as prince problem. creative talent ruined by ego.

In the era of big TVs being cheap and TV looking like movies. Going to the cinema isn't worth it, but people still like the idea of an event. Something worth going to the cinema. It's far and few between, but still is there.

The Nolan brand has a perceived quality that makes it worth it to some. While that may be diminished after his last couple of films, It's not slop and I think the pull of Matt Damon and a Historical epic will overcome a lot of that. It's not going and seeing that Star Wars show from Disney+ in the cinema. Or an action film that is indistinguishable from one that went straight to streaming. There's something extra.

It's why Project Hail Mary did well. Star everyone likes and based on a book from the writer of The Martian. There's a percieved added quality to get people out to the cinema.

There's no way Nolan doesn't still have that perceived quality, despite disappointing recent films. There'll be a big opening, but word of mouth will probably play into how successful it is after that.

If word of mouth is good, it could be a big hit. Stupid casting choices asided but who knows. It could be close to 3 hours with a few good scenes and boring. I'm sure Nolan's made a bunch of retarded choices none of us know about yet.

Kind of. Like the book, it shows that all of Oppenheimer's friends and family are commies, his wife is a commie, he compromises national security to fuck a commie, he wrings his hands over the bomb like a commie (but only after they gave him the power and money to make it), but because he's not actually currently a card carrying member of the communist party that means he's not really a commie and he's just being persecuted. The movie also seems to place the blame for the poor man's persecution squarely on the guy played by Robert Downey Jr., then namedrops John Kennedy almost the exact same way Gordon introduced the Joker in Batman Begins. Also Pig Girl is naked for no damn reason at all.

A smarter way to DEI this shit would have been to have Hunter Schafer as Achilles, since he was "of feminine beauty" to the point Ulysses had to trick him to spot him hiding among women and have a nigress play Calypso since she is some exotic nymph woman in an island in the middle of nowhere.

I kinda feel bad for Nolan on one side because even though I think he is sharply declining as a director, he still seems to be one of the few passionate ones left and I'm sure he tried to make a good work out of these limitations, but on the other hand, if there ever was a director who had the power to push back on this stuff that would be him. Even if the movie risked not qualifying for any awards it would have only worked against the award if he showed the world they are so much up their asses in their own propagandistic efforts to not recognize what is probably the most anticipated non-capeshit movie of the last three years from the most popular director of the decade.

Agree with the acting and somewhat with the looks although Sydney is very good looking when she wants to be and takes really good care of her body unlike many women who played Helen before. But she doesn't have too many lines in the Odyssey unless Nolan pulls a girlboss on us and has her tag along. Even adding the double role of Clytemnestra doesn't exactly pile on the dialogue IMHO.

I agree with casting a blonde pretty boy around 30 but I think a tranny like Schafer would find playing a man insulting. Calypso though should be at least White passing because Atlas wasn't Black and if you turn a sea dwelling humanoid into an African then you're just reopening the old wounds caused by the Black Ariel the little mermaid drama again.
