Maybe this is why they're pushing Hantavirus so hard. Gotta save Nolan from himself. After reading above how his movies are basically him jerking himself off over meta shit, it's possible this thing isn't being made out of malice after all but is just some weird autistic artiste thing that grew into a monster, and because he's Nolan, the most overrated director of the modern era, he has the clout to get it made.
Especially since they would have to ask the uncomfortable question as to why the women of Messina didn't just slit their new husbands throats rather then passively accept the change in circumstance.
This isn't difficult at all. Just depict the Messinian men as evil rapists and the mercenaries as heroic liberators. If Daenerys can literally crucify swathes of men she finds abhorrent and still be considered a 'good person' by slop enthusiasts, at least the mercs can give them a quick chop.
That being said, your idea invokes a more intelligent film that sounds quite compelling. On the one hand, these guys rolled up and murdered your father, brother, husband, and so on - it's not hard to justify hating and killing them. On the other hand, there are several logistical issues with this: Daily life in such days (and even now, frankly) might not have been possible without male strength or expertise, so some might consider these men a necessary evil to stomach. Secondly, even if they do manage to assemble the women and agree on a plan without getting caught (quite an impressive feat itself), if a sizeable portion of the women choose not to follow through for whatever reason, then it's not hard for the remaining men to overpower and execute the murderers while using them as an example for the others. There's a lot of potential for great drama here. I agree that they'd never make it in a cinematic climate like this, which really is a shame.
But note how boring the monsters in the trailer are. They are barely visible and the bits we can see are generic with the same dull colors as everything else.
I heard from somewhere (don't have a source, sorry) that apparently Nolan was going to make it so that, "Well, I'm going to show how these events actually COULD have happened REALISTICALLY but the Greeks BELIEVED that the gods and supernatural elements intervened."
Okay so don't adapt the Odyssey then. Adapt literally anything else.
I think he also said that he was going to try and show how the Trojan Horse could have "realistically" happened because to our modern sensibilities, the giant horse looks too much like an obvious trap. Fucking shut up, Nolan.
People are seriously forgetting that Nolan studied English Literature, like what are you lot expecting from him? Are you aware of what the average English Literature department is like?
Also that claim is misleading. Tickets for about 14 locations went out a year in advance. Those are locations which basically always show out when it comes to IMAX showings. Think Metreon (San Francisco), Lincoln Square (New york), BFI IMAX (London).
These are not your run of the mill IMAX locations, these were ones that show actual film and have a ton of people regularly refreshing to get tickets for them.
And this was not for every screening. It was about 4 in total per location. There are going to be a ton of opening weekend tickets for these locations not on sale. It was about creating publicity to go "The Odyssey sold out a year in advance, so buy tickets whenever you can" and that "IMAX is the way to show it".
More 70mm locations were actually announced after the original showings were dropped, but if someone was to go and see it these are like the only screens which are worthwhile (70mm projectors break down often, these are old projectors which will go years without use. Even projectors that do get used a lot will break down. The BFI IMAX for instance had to stop their Dune Part 2 showing at one point at the midnight release, there have been other issues as well recently at the Metreon or Universal. Can't remember which). These are the only locations (maybe The Chinese Theatre in California can, they have a dual laser set up there. No clue how it works with their temporary projector set up.)
California currently has 7 of the 21 prints on sale now (it should be noted that there are locations that would get tickets not on sale, such as Rochester which has basically gotten a new, used, projector specifically for the Odyssey in a refurbishment).
Which is funny, because these are the only locations outside of NA.
And these are the locations in Canada (IMAX originated in Canada)
(Canada has more locations showing it than everywhere outside of NA).
Really hard to say; it could go either way. Nolan's brand is strong enough it could bring in a lot of people.
On the other hand, virtually all the noise about this film has been negative, from the very first trailer. The armor looks cheap, the film looks drab, the casting is bizarre at best, there are a hundred Ellen Page memes shitting all over the film, and so on. And most of it coming from fans of Nolan films.
The film is also crazy expensive (probably $400 million combined production and marketing budgets), and this film doesn't have a Barbie film to prop it up like Oppenheimer did. If this does Dunkirk numbers, and ends up $600-ish million box office, it'll be a huge financial flop. Though really anything under a $1 billion will be a disappointment, regardless of any media spin saying otherwise.

That's from the Time interview everyone has been mocking for days now:
That interview is partially why I think he's actually going to make an Iliad/Odyssey hybrid film, because he didn't get to direct 'Troy' two decades ago. (Ironically enough, Wolfgang Petersen was hired to make a Batman vs Superman film, but then switched to making 'Troy' instead, while Nolan got 'Batman Begins')
I recall one of the many complaints about 'Troy' was the total absence of the divine and supernatural elements from the story. As far as I know, David Benioff wrote the script by himself but maybe Nolan had some pre-production influence on the final film after all.
I really don't know why so many studios and directors can't grasp that removing the 'magic' from stories diminishes them.
This weekend I did read a french comic adaptation of the Trojan War and they adapted the right armors and weapons to be in line with what was used in the bronze age.
It still looked very cool, so I dont understand why the armors and weapons look this shit in the movie. They absolutely can make cool looking armor, even chinese movies got to make cool armor, but the ones in the film look bland and boring as fuck. Almost like they have fear to have personality in their designs.
Ive thought about it and it occurs to me why people are so angry this time.
This movie is Blasphemous. In the literal sense of the term. It is Blasphemy.
To the Ancient Greeks, the God's of Olympus were not fictional beings. They were real. As were the events around their chosen people and their foibles like Odysseus and Achillese.
This movie is a Blasphemous rendition of something that is supposed to be divine, and while very few people these days worship the God's of Olympus unironically, there is still a deep seated sense of religious fidelity in the western soul towards them. So to see one of their religious epics appropriated in this manner by people who have no respect towards the subject matter is like watching someone piss on a cross in the middle of the street.
Its enough to make you wonder if Nolan is not tempting the fates with this one. The Olympic God's were not known to take being mocked lightly.
*breathes in* *looks at cast*
BWWWAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHHAAAAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!! Oh shit this nigger nolanberg is serious let me laugh even hard, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whether or not the film makes enough to be successful compared to production costs and marketing. The film is going to make over 600mil at the box office for sure.
Oppenheimer almost made a billion and did anyone actually think that was a good film? I enjoyed the experience in Imax, but I would never watch the film again. Whatever enjoyment any of you got for the film, was it something you'd have recommended to someone they must see in the cinema? Of course not. It was a curiosity. Everyone, even thoughs who enjoyed it, was still dissappointed.
That was Nolan after coming off Tenet, which was a film that no one liked or thought was good. Even go back to Dunkirk. Would you have told anyone they must see it in the cinema? Beyond the experience. It's also not a film people would rewatch.
The Odyssey has way more mainstream appeal than Oppenheimer. The interesting thing for me is if it'll be a block buster crowd pleaser or another experience, a curiosity of Nolan.
The trailers haven't been good, but the extended Trojan horse scene they were showing in Imax was really good.

Tenet had the benefit of cool science fiction concepts behind it and the “reversed vs. regular time” action scenes are generally agreed to have been the highlight. Oppenheimer didn’t even have that, it was pretentiousness dialled up to the max. It’s not even a good biography of the guy.
And as for “realism”, Nolan could’ve just gone with how the actual historical Troy was likely conquered - an earthquake destroyed the wall and the Greeks built a wooden horse as a tribute to Poseidon who was also the god of earthquakes.

For what I know, current majors are graduating without being able to read, heh. But, Nolan graduated many, many years ago, so there must be some hope.
Thing is, a lib is a lib, educated or not. And libs always have a need to deconstruct. The base of their beliefs is that everything needs to be. So, forget what we all normal people ever learned about the old Greek myths, it needs to be deconstructed and analyzed with modern world lens, otherwise it's been read wrong.
its same reason why they all thought Carthaginians were Africans
and trying to rewrite Hamilcar Barca and Hannibal Barca to be Niggers
when they're more akin to Mediterraneans and Middle Eastern
Its sad that when you come from a civilization with no culture
and you have a bunch of weird fucks who'd think "Oh dont worry, let us rewrite history to make you guys be cultured"
and so we have Nigger Cleopatra
and so we have Nigger Anne Boleyn
and so we have Nigger Helen of Troy
Just waiting for Nigger George Washington
and Nigger Captain James Cook
and Nigger Jeanne D'Arc
since lets face it, only western civilizations would make sure niggers replace their historical figures
and the rest of the world wouldnt because the rest of the world have self-respect.
I hate being lectured about "how didn't the Trojans knew the horse was a trick" by a boomer that would open an executable named Windows 26. If anything going the extra steps to "prove" it is safe makes it look significantly more suspicious than just leaving it and running away.
If they wanted to make it more real either have the Trojans refuse to cut it open due to superstition or have the guards looking for it getting drunk in the post victory revelry.
