Imagine Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge remake as a launch title, including drop-in/drop-out gameplay using the mysterious 'C' button.
I just this week discovered Mental Omega. You seen that? Looks pretty cool. Even straps right onto C&Cnet.

Maybe these devs should literally start continuing work on 30 year old games for the hell of it, rather than do remakes. We didn't have an opportunity like this before.

Cheers for the link, I'll grab that mod and have a laugh with it. I got another mod that allowed GDI, Allies, Nod and Soviets all in one game. It looks like I'm about to lose another few months to RA2.

I just realized that more time has passed since Smash Ultimate’s last DLC than had passed at that time since the game’s release :cryblood:

I really don’t know how the future of Smash will go. I highly doubt Sakurai’s current game is Smash based on what he’s indicated in his YouTube series, so if he were in charge, the next game would be at least another three years out from now, and that’s being generous. They could get someone other than Sakurai, maybe as further justification to reboot the series since making something even bigger than Ultimate while keeping the important stuff from that game would be difficult (especially if master-negotiator Sakurai isn’t involved). Or they could take the lazy way out and get Bandai Namco to throw together a Smash Ultimate Ultimate, maybe supervised by Sakurai, but that would involve making a slightly-improved remaster of a game that a lot of people already have, on a system that can already play said game.

Sakurai autism about online spoilers is a major reason why they stopped doing single-player campaigns after Brawl. I'd really like for them to return to doing shit like subspace emissary so Sakurai stepping back might unironically be a blessing in disguise.

SSBU is already extremely similar to FWU, so it wouldn't be that different a situation to just rerelease Ultimate but with new content (not just characters). They could remaster Melee instead, either option works pretty well.

If they do decide on a reboot then they should try a 3D SSB, like Power Stone.

Something tells me that the practice of "Using the latest version of the game" ended in using the 3DS version because even the visual changes (such as the Barrel cannon firing) look similar to the 3DS version
Was probably out of convenience/laziness.

I'm sure it took some time taking out the motion control mechanics the first time around to make it play as classic as possible, and downgrading the graphics is nothing new when it comes to the 3DS. In fact that was one of it's bigger downfalls because you would have games that would straight-up not animate mouth movements (Castlevania LOTS MOF) have the models not animate at all during cut-scenes (DOA Dimensions) or have a compromise where the foreground animates but not the background (Super SF4 3D edition).

So when it came to the Switch, they probably didn't want to give it the Luigi Mansion 2 treatment and opted for a straight up copy-pasta because the thought was probably "well the work was already done, why bother again?"

Personally, kind of hoping for a back-to-basics reboot. I can see a new Smash with a Melee-Brawl sized roster that takes time to really update all the character models and move sets, alongside placing emphasis on the side content again. Always wanted Sakurai to go back and do another SubSpace, but this time using the Nintendo Worlds like Melee's Adventure Mode did. Of course, would also like all the Nintendo History features to come back as well: Trophies, Stickers, Chronicle, Masterpieces, etc..

Would also be nice if they implemented some features from other platform fighters, such as unlockable costumes. Could fix the FE problem if someone like Lucina is just an unlockable Marth outfit.

As for newcomers, they still have some big Nintendo ones that could get some love. Captain Toad/Toadette, DJ Octavio, Bandana Waddle Dee and Dixie Kong all spring to mind as characters that should have made it already. They could also dip into the weirder IPs again. It isn't as if games like Famicon Detective Club, Advanced Wars, Endless Ocean, Another Code, etc. haven't all randomly gotten new entries since Ultimate.

I'd like to see Paper Mario, Booster, Mallow, Geno, Boshi, and Mario & Luigi (their M&L iterations, playing together like Ice Climbers). Might be too much Mario but I'd like to see it.

For 3rd party, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow, Dr. Robotnik, Crono, Agumon, and Dante. Also Bonk and Bubsy as joke characters. Way too heavy on Sonic, I know.

Melee/Brawl would be too small (Ultimate has just short of 90 characters), but a strong collection of 50 with an Adventure Mode-inspired story mode would be great. If they went the reboot route, I think they’d have to do some things radically different to minimize comparisons to Ultimate.

You are the only person I’ve ever seen even consider the possibility of DJ Octavio being playable.

I ended up not liking Ultimate but there's really no way to compete with it on roster size. I wish them well on whatever they do (and turn down the fucking particle effects, can't even see what's going on in fights.)

Let's keep it that way. What we need is a fully fleshed out Dark Link with a sword. More swords.

Okay I saw something. Sutte Hakkun was put onto the Switch last week as part of the SNES update. It is neat, try it. But this is a Satellaview game. Nintendo rarely, if ever even acknowledges that the Satellaview existed. But now they are.

So I am going to say that the release of Sutte Hakkun is confirmation that we are getting a fourth Famicom Detective Club game with the content from the FDC Satellaview mystery.

If they were to go radically different, then realistically, we'd have a Melee-Brawl sized roster. The only reason Smash has been able to add so much is due to reusing assets and porting over characters. Smash has been using the same models and moves since at least Brawl, if not Melee. Smash Ultimate really highlights this as many fighters do not look good in its art style, Shulk and Ike being the best examples. A lot of the fighters can also really use a move set update, especially the more notoriously off fighters like Ganondorf and Wario.

You are never going to beat Ultimate unless you just add to it, to which I highly doubt they will do. The rights for that game have to be a nightmare in general, and I am not sure the 3rd parties will play ball as much for the second round given how much has changed since ~2018. I cannot see Square giving over 4 characters for a base roster without a hefty sum. Not even sure that Microsoft would be as willing as before given how much of a train wreck they have become. Konami is another ?, and SEGA may get cocky given Sonic isn't a joke anymore. In a way, Ultimate is a miracle game, I am not sure they could pull it off again.

Splatoon is big enough for a second rep. The obvious answer is Octolings, but if they keep the ink gimmick, not sure how that will work as you would need 8 more colors the Inklings don't have, or have to create some system to either identify ink or lock the color costume of the opposing inkling/Octoling once a color is chosen.

For Splatoon, you would have to get creative for a secondary, or more, reps. Octavio could use tools from the story mode and would add another villain to the roster. Only other characters I could see are the music performers like Callie & Marie, being weird duos/Trios groups that could represent the teamwork of Splatoon.

It came out on cartridge for a limited time similar to how Thracia 776 was released.

My expectation is that there are rights complications to re-releasing satellaview games as-is since the modern way to emulate them is by emulating the satellaview hardware and running its bios. They could of course hack the roms to run without that as really old satellaview translations to english did but thats a lot more work.

It seems like Fantasy Life: The Girl Who Stole Time will be a multiplatform release and no longer a Switch exclusive. It should release on April 23rd.

Eurogamer article detailing the leak.

I hate Bluesky but the reporting initially came from Gematsu:

It's a shame Gematsu doesn't know how to archive pages.
