in their own words, they literally only started taking preservation of their older content seriously in 2023, and they don't even know how many games they own.

What's with all these grown men making a big dramatic declaration about whether or not they're buying a Switch 2. Nigga it's a $300 console (probably). That's "impulse purchase" territory. This isn't like buying a car or putting a down payment on a house.

I feel like people never leave the "I'm a child and can't afford game consoles" mindset even when they're adults with more disposable income than sense. You don't need to budget a year in advance to buy a fucking bing bing wahoo machine for kids.

If the current pricing of these devices is any indication;

Switch Lite: $200
Switch: $300
Switch OLED: $350

It is more than likely that the Switch 2 might release at $400 considering the day and age we live in where consoles don't get any price drops.

For a single person it is not that much of a problem. the issue with portables is that these aren't precisely "shareable" devices. This isn't like a PlayStation or Xbox where you hand each kid a controller and they all can play the same game in couch multiplayer on the same console. Each kid in the household would want a Switch 2 of their own and suddenly that's $800 minimum to keep the peace between two siblings. (more if there are more kids or the parents also are fans that grew up with Nintendo and also wants one as well) and that's just the hardware, Nintendo never drops the price of their games, with this new gen we might get to see Switch games hit $70, Mario Kart 9 multiplayer will require individual copies for each family member. What was once an impulse buy suddenly has crept into "too much for this economy" expense. That's the point you tell your kids that they'll have to stick with the old Switch for the time being.

Mario Kart 9 multiplayer will require individual copies for each family member.
They need to bring back DS' Download Play, it let you play some multiplayer games with a single cartridge, though sometimes (always/usually?) featured limitations, like Mario Kart DS only letting you play as Shyguy.

TIL nobody wants to be able to play Wind Waker or Mario Galaxy 2 on Switch.
Nor Twilight Princess, Melee, Star Fox Adventures, etc...

I wonder if Rare would've still devolved into shit under Nintendo's leadership or not.
Unlikely, seeing as Rare's departure was around the time Nintendo acquired the remnants of the Turok boys at Iguana (Retro Studios) who would go on to become the "New Rare". The gamecube may have been a commercial flop, but the gamecube era was a time of great experimentation and freedom permitted by Nintendo, especially when it came to some of their most protected franchises. Mario had a paint brush, and Luigi had a vacuum cleaner. An effort was made to bring more mature content to the system with Eternal Darkness. As stated above Nintendo gave a new Texas-based studio the rights to bring Metroid into the 3rd dimension. Paper Mario TTYD had a noose in the main square and a Princess Peach shower scene. Mario Strikers allowed you to hip check mother fucking Toad into electricity and the character screamed in agony...

The Gamecube era allowed for more than enough maturity and creativity for Rare to absolutely dominate in, regardless of how the GC's low sales gimped every property. Unless they totally lost their mojo, an early 2000s Rare developing games for the GC would have been great to see. And had Rare survived those years, the Wii would have likely afforded them an opportunity to get a smash hit with a Wii Banjo-Kazooie game or maybe a Zapper game in the Perfect Dark universe. I think that would have been better than languishing in mediocrity for decades...

enjoy your discount (guano-shitting) Banjo substitute modern gamers!..... fuck Microsoft.

I lean towards Rare being much different if they'd stayed with Nintendo and this is a position I only recently came to. Until Microsoft went on their big acquisition spree in the late 2010s/early 2020s, I would have guessed that rot had already set in at Rare and that Nintendo let them go because of that. But seeing how universally companies under Microsoft have been sapped of their creative energy and drive, I'm much more inclined to believe that Microsoft management style is simply anathema to good games being made.

The Wii had some exclusives that I wish Nintendo would re-release, in particular Soulcalibur Legends and Castlevania Judgment.

The console looks sweet. Plus if the Joy-Con rumors prove true (most likely they will). Having the ability to use those things as a mouse is a great change for accessibility reasons. See this is the kind of inclusion stuff I can actually get behind.

that's crazy, there is no way nintendo will do this when they can just dripfeed them in a subscription service.
...oh gamecube and up? they can mzke way more on those by making them HD and just release them one by one af full priced games.
The Japanese are the true Jews of the nickel and dime you for every yen

As I said, every game people actually want to play. /sneed

But point was, they’ve practically already ported or rereleased anything they can of value.

Game Cube for all the praise it now gets is limited in what people want to play from its library. Very limited.

Wii era Rareware would've been interesting. They seem like the type of company that could really utilize gimmicks well if they wanted to.

That's probably true, and I guess most of the old staff is probably gone by now anyway.

I feel like I’m the only one who thinks the mouse thing is really fucking dumb. Not that it couldn’t be useful for certain games, but what about anyone who plays their Switch from a chair? Or a couch? Or a recliner? Or anywhere that isn’t directly in front of a desk?
Just don't expect to play games that make mandatory use of those features unless you're in a setting where you can do so? It'd be like thinking Ring Fit Adventure is really fucking dumb because you can't play it on a couch.

It's limited but not that limited. There's more there than N64 at least, which itself has dozens of worthwhile games.

Just to be clear, you are making an argument that ZELDA is not a game Nintendo fans want to play from the Gamecube library.

I think they're just holding back some ports of mainline Mario and Zelda games from the Gamecube and Wii back so they have some they can port to Switch 2. Since Switch games work on Switch 2, consumers will just be able to play anything that gets ported to Switch on Switch 2. If they blow their wad too early, they won't have any new remasters to release over the next decade or so during times when the release schedule is a bit thin. I don't even think Wind Waker or Twilight Princess would be that much work, because they've already done HD remasters for Wii U that they can port over with minimal changes.

Just use the arm of the sofa or the chair for the mouse like everyone else who has a computer at their tv?

What if I’m sitting in a spot other than the furthest-right seat of my couch? What if the armrest isn’t big enough, or is curved, or isn’t at a length that aligns with positioning my arm in a typical mouse-holding position?

Then suffer as you clearly couldn't figure out another solution.
