apparently Nintendo has stated that a large portion of Lite sales are from women and that they ramped up production to hit that demographic.
With these colors, I can see why the ladies love it

The Switch Lite exists because Nintendo realized, too late, that killing the 3DS was a MASSIVE fucking mistake and that the 3DS has it's own MASSIVE fanbase that don't buy consoles and were either going to stop buying video games when the 3DS was retired or potentially switch brands if Sony or Microsoft realized "holy shit, Nintendo is abandoning the portable gaming market! Quickly! Start work on a PSP3 or X-Box Portable!".

To their credit, they managed to salvage far more than expected out of said exodus killing their portable gaming sphere with the Switch Lite. But if anything, Nintendo's never going to give up the portability factor going forward for future systems so long as they keep their current stance of "one system per generation" because they REALLY don't want the ghost of the PSP to rise from the grave and sweep up the entire portable gaming system market they threw away so casually.
The Switch Lite exists due to internal politics, namely Gamefreak/TPC pissing themselves about the Switch being a mistake and maybe killing their golden goose (cue Pokemon on Switch selling more than the DS/3DS versions ever did.) That's it, the internal design team was ready to move on and Nintendo didn't have the resources to adequately support two platforms at once.

Also, portable gaming is fucking dead, even in Japan, because of phones and even having the market to themselves post-Vita Nintendo was still staring down the barrel of a gun by selling carraiges in a world of Model-Ts.

That's what I've been hearing for over a decade, it's exaggerated though. Mobile certainly cuts into the market, but dedicated portable gaming is still very viable. Steam Deck and Switch proved that.

I'm sure if Sony didn't burn their bridges with the Vita they could have made a much more successful handheld successor, they're probably Sega'd from that sector now.

The Switch is about to surpass the 3DS hardware lifetime sales in Japan shortly soon, and will certainly give the DS and Gameboy a run of their money.

There is also a higher adoption rate with the normal and OLED models of the Switch over there rather than the portable-only and cheaper Lite version
(as of 5/22/22, by Famitsu)
Switch OLED Model – 1,798,321
Switch – 18,305,423
Switch Lite – 4,726,225
Considering there are multiple popular games aimed more for a home use rather than a portable one (to name a few: Momotaro Dentetsu, Ring Fit Adventure, Joysound, Mario Party Superstars), this western meme of the japanese people being obsessed with mobile only is grossly exaggerated. It just happened that a lot of videogames the japanese like were mostly developed on handhelds than on home consoles, ever since the 7th gen and the focus on HD game development that prompted this turn of events.

Wish I could find data that reveals what's the portion between portable and dock use in Japan but it wouldn't surprise me if it's something around 60:40.

I know.
I don't like the portable aspect of it. I know there's a dock but it's clear that it's technically limited by the fact that it's mainly a portable console.
nontendo has never been the company to push its technical aspects to the max. maybe in the early days sure but ever since the wii all theyve prioritized is a console that works so you can play fun games on that at least work.
the switch does its job, docked or portable. its a better Wii u, borrowing some inspiration from the ds which was a huge success due to its portability, and look were we are with the switch, its getting there as Nintendo's no.1 console of all time.

who looks at Nintendo games for mind blowing graphics and other gamerbro stuff of the sort anyway? The better looking games for the system are more than passable, games can run fine if they were properly made, and sure, maybe its not PS4/XBOX standards but its not trying to be.

its dumb stupid fun for the sake of dumb stupid fun. not trying to be anything more. Proved with titles like any Mario Title, wario ware Wii Switch Sports, Kirby, BOTW, Splatoon- these are the games Nintendo are known for, and the level of quality they aim fore. focuss on fun rather than dem graphics.

No, consoles are fucking dead in Japan. There was a reason Nintendo spent time figuring out how to make games cross-compatible between portable and console for their next generation. The Switch is a good solution, the clue to what it is is even in the name itself.

Portables are dead too, just ask Sony.

And it's doing so in NA too despite that market being way more friendly to home consoles. It's also a mere fraction of the size of the JP mobile market.
Ok you need to talk to Marissa about fractions of the mobile market in Japan and how it proves that something is actually something else.
