They mock the map design as bad and call it an easy FE game. They also see it as the thing that brought waifu culture to FE, even though they likely all see Lyn as their waifu.
And now with their "de facto Mario RPG series" Mario & Luigi gone, thanks to similar circumstances that tanked that series: fans just want Nintendo, Intelligent Systems, fucking anyone at this point to make any Mario-related RPG again, and the team just seems so ungodly averse to it. Like: at some point, fans are just gonna give up and move on. They did with M&L, Nintendo fans did that for a LONG time with Metroid and are still doing it for F-Zero, and they've already started to again with Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling. It's called supply and demand, mothafuckers; you don't pay up, then that shit's just gonna get handed out somewhere else.
This point gets me
M & L was unfairly treated, mostly because of Paper Mario. They only made one generic styled game and that was because it was a crossover with Sticker Star and they wanted to focus on interactions between the real and Paper versions. After that game and the Color Splash reveal, Paper Mario fans started attacking M & L for being the rpg series. It is pretty clear that Paper Mario fans played a hand in the destruction of the series over a petty rivalry that never existed. They took a comment from a presenter, someone not in high rank, and used it defend their Paper boy while attacking Alpha Dream. Mix in a poorly timed remake on Alpha Dream’s part, and the series was doomed to fail.
This guy talks about it, even if he is a bit crude.
Tenabe and Miyamoto just don't get it. And the Japanese audience doesn't help matters either since they are also partially to blame.
On some accounts, it seems Miyamoto does. He just suggested being more generic during Sticker Star. While that sounds bad, you have to remember that Super came before and caused the fandom to shout out that it was too weird and serious. I think a director literally stated that the Paper Mario fandom was too stupid to understand the narrative of Super, so they had to dumb the games down. Not actually that surprised, they hated Super for quite awhile and many could not bother to get invested in the narrative.
Miyamoto actually thought Sticker Star was boring, but it was probably too late to change and it seems Tenabe calls most of the shots. Tenabe has wanted the series to be like this for years, so this seems to be more his decision.
They loved the shit out of Sticker Star, that's true, but if you for some reason just really liked that game like Japan did
Japan is very mobile-centric, it being on mobile hardware was to its benefit.
As a former die hard Nintendo fan, the only game in the last 14 years by Nintendo that actually amazes the fuck out of me was The Wonderful 101, and that's more of Platinum's title than Nintendos (IP is still owned by Nintendo despite the remastered ports being published by Platinum)
It was the only game that generation I felt was built with passion, love, challenge, and nostalgia for everything great about video games.
It is not the only new franchise to get mistreated, anyone remember Codename: S.T.E.A.M.?
Bing Bing Wahoo 3D World, which I felt was absolutely soulless.
Actually thought this game was really good, it had great level design.
Also, the Fanbase hated 3D World when first revealed as it was generic Mario. It took quite a few years to be placed at the top of Mario’s titles.
They should've just made an actual 3d mario game for the Wii U though, I'll agree.
Agree. The 3D titles should be treated more like in between titles to a 64. The Wii U needs a big 3D Mario, but instead it got what would have been a servi game after something like Odyssey.
