i really like the gunplay in sulfur and the basic premise of the inventory system but the economy and meta-game are just astoundingly badly designed. the upgrade system is so bad it's unreal and you basically just end up grinding the same four oils to make decent guns because the pro/con system just isn't thought out, and most of the guns have weird gimmicky methods of operation that totally don't even work with the game's upgrade system. the guns designs ARE fucking awesome, it's probably the best part of the game, legendary firearms design going on here. the basic premise of the gunplay where every enemy is a 2d doom cutout but you can blast/cut holes in them is a very very good concept, the basic systems are phenomenal. The quick melee is extremely fun, extremely high skill cap, and really addicting. The problem is that its great gameplay loop stuck in a shitty game
I really liked the game for about forty hours but then i just snapped. the game's first four levels or so are a tight loop where you fight an exciting boss battle but the forest and fortress after it feels like a bunch of random piecemeal shit thrown on top of it and the very thin narrative the game has just completely dissolves into you just doing shit for no reason. Why are we fighting ninja turtles, again? Like... cool, but... what does this have to do with the cultist dungeon we just cleared? Why didn't we fight these guys in the literal fucking sewer level with the TMNT references? Personally story doesn't matter but the game treats the story as something that's driving the player's motivation even though the game doesn't even attempt to play storyteller - the game's opening cinematic literally starts off with you crashing a car and chasing a witch into a cave and it never gets mentioned again. The food economy is a clever idea but the last time i played everything after the dungeon felt like you were playing a expansion pack for an MMORPG where everything pre-expansion doesn't matter anymore.
game has a lot of potential but im nearly certain the devs aren't able to make it work. i hope im wrong and i'll give it a shot if it ever releases 1.0.
