The fucking thing about sports games is that I've tried to play some of them like strategy games, but just can't break through a certain wall I can't really describe. Like there's some kind of mental block we all have that keeps us from appreciating them for what they are. Like I tried to play Tecmo Super Bowl on NES because American football seems pretty tactical, but for whatever reason I just don't "get it", and it just kind of feels like everyone who does like football just automatically seems to know what's going on, I guess from being exposed to it since childhood.
Speaking of overrated games, here's an overrated sports game: Golf Story. It's just a carbon copy of Mario Golf on GBC, which was an RPG with experience points in the exact same way, only Golf Story is a lot darker and you play as a completely oblivious retard who happens to be a savant at golf, and everyone else in the game is an obnoxious sadbrained faggot who's always tearing him down in subtle ways. The gameplay is good because it's a direct ripoff of an already good game, but the writing, setting, characters, all horrible. It's a lot like Stardew Valley, what with it being a good game only because it ripped off an old one, but everything new to it is insufferable. But I guess those games both get passes because muh indies and muh rightthink.
Shieet, you could argue that Undertale's a ripoff of Earthbound in the same vein, but it just adds so much to the battle system and has genuinely good writing and characters (albeit, that does depend on your tolerance for Homestuck-ish dialog), but Undertale's terrific and brings a lot new to the table. It tells a good story and keeps things light and jovial until shit hits the fan. Golf Story and Stardew Valley are practically romhack levels of unoriginal, but with a cast of insufferable current year NPCs that make those games flat-out garbage.
