I really don't know how to feel about MH. It's a franchise built on fanhype by recycling old monsters because they haven't been in the most recent game or two, so they just drag-drop the old model in and woah! Amazing!

On the other hand, it's one of the few modern coop games that has a 'trifecta' kind of gameplay. You can be "that gun dude" or "the cool support guy", and really bring something unique to each fight. With the sling getting so many new functions, those unique angles are sort of gone. Also with the new layer of depth on the Switch MH game, where you have like 2-3 fighting styles to each weapon. It becomes so many degrees of customization, that it goes from "that hammer dude who is good at stunning" to "what 50 things can you do, again?".

All that said, I'd really like to replay it as a solo Dark Souls game. It feels rewarding to solo a monster, but MH:W being my first game, I also legitimately got angry for the first time in years at a game. You need to get so used to the game and AI to have a remote chance, that I basically needed help after 3-4 large monsters on my first playthrough, as everyone else picked a ranged weapon and just rolled through it FPS-style. MH is a unique franchise, and equally as autistic as souls. I'll always hate it for celebrating rehashing though.
So I’m thinking about getting back into this game and I want to try something besides IG and GS. I’m leaning towards Gunlance or maybe one of the bowguns. Anyone got builds/recommended weapons for those, and keep in mind that I have absolutely no idea how the Kilbe Taroth stuff works, so some the really good shit may be a hit hard to get right now.
Gunlance is so satisfying, and I fucking hate everything MH:W. Sticking the stick grenade thing in the face of a monster first thing and seeing the head get shot off, or just simply doing the infinite reload combo and equally blast them to shit. It's also very satisfying to just straight up block a hard-hitting attack.

Though, in my constant need for validation, you feel worthless if you're not actively tanking, and if you have bad luck, you never get even a single combo off and you're basically worthless. It's a hit-or-miss kind of weapon, but aesthetics are on point.

The games are super repetitive, but they always add one or two things extra to keep that gameplay loop fresh. It’s kinda like Hitman or Megaman in that regard. I can understand the frustration over the fact that each game basically just expands upon the previous ones instead of doing something complete different, but I still enjoy it for what it is

Monster Hunter is the epitome of the phrase "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Well it, Hitman(sans Absolution), Kirby, Megaman, and both styles of Castlevania (even if I still enjoyed Lords of Shadow 1 as a standalone product)

This is probably just me but I really think with Iceborne adding the Arctic biome the game could use some restructuring. Having the map locked behind GMaster-Rank structurally seems really bizarre compared to the previous titles. World has issues with elements due to a more condensed roster so the utility of them is extremely uneven, with things like thunder+dragon covering the majority of weaknesses. Iceborne mends this by being able to even out or atleast spread out more elements, but only late/postgame. Its great to be able to keep piling on new monsters even in the endgame like 4U managed, but a lot of this seems like it could be utilized better throughout the game. That said I know the meat of MH games is post game anyway so eventually it doesn't matter.

@Corypheus Definitly try out the GL, its really fun to use and its got a nice mix up of utilities.

That lineup....I’m boutta nut
I know it’s way too much to hope for, but I’d love to see molten tigrex again too!
I goofed and that wasn't the real lineup. So far its a new Ice Elder Dragon, Street Shark, Big Bull, and Black Tobi Kadachi Nargacuga. There is a roar at the end of the recent trailer that sort of sounds like Tigrex so thats a possibility. I think Tigrex, Khezu, Zinogre/Brachydios might be the most we see out of returning monsters if anything, with the rest being brand new. Probably a bit after launch they'll announce a returning monster like they did with Deviljo.

To my understanding, you get it after beating the story, not after Master Rank. They say master rank is recommended, but not required

I blame my wife for getting me into this game, honestly.
I started with sword and shield, but now it's hammer(time) 90% of the time as staggering a monster like HR Diablos in mid charge is so satisfying.

Fuck katanas messing up the big bang combos on monsters' heads tho.
I'm hella excited for iceborne and hope Malfesto makes a comeback.

Fuck that #DualBladesAndDashJuiceMafia

Duals are awesome and I can respect a man who mains them, but I'm addicted to the stopping power of buon flora.

I live to poison and stagger fuckers like deviljho. It just feels right.
But old habits die hard so I still end up playing support when katanas make part breaking next to impossible or the monster spends too much time in the air.

I really liked that when MHW was releasing they put SA in as a "Technical Weapon" as if it wasn't one of the most brainlet ones someone could pick.

Its definitely tied for my favorite weapon

Fair, I mainly use them because it suits my rushdown playstyle

Regular lance is the galaxy brain pick. It’s so fucking broken, especially with guard up. Like oh is that your RKO you’re revving up? Sure would be a shame if someone were to.............power guard

They are a hella good weapon for rushdown, though.

Not sure about hammer, but I tend to change what I do based on how much I like/hate fighting the monster.

Stand in the fucking lava with shields up, guard up, guard plus, and max stamina. You can't die

Hell you can survive kirin's bullshit with ease and it really doesn't take much on the armor front either, you don't need endgame monsters for these powers.

I’ll also use Katanas when trying to reach high-up bodyparts without climbing, like tails or beaks

Heavy Bowguns are pretty OP in World. They're a bit confusing at first given all the different types of ammo and mods you have to learn but in general ranged weapons are usually the strongest ones (just look at any of the 80 million bow speedruns). For HBG Pickle is top-tier and works for pretty much any monster, you get slicing, sticky 3, clusters 2 and 3 and poison and sleep and the cherry on top being the gatling as your special. You can pretty much build a one-set fits all with it and then only make slight modifications based on if the need arises (like speccing blast resist against Teo or Ef against Vaal). If you run a shield mod and at least guard 3 (guard 5 lessons chip damage, definitely good against AT Nergigante) and guard up you can block everything. Then there's I believe it's "Support" which is a Kulve drop but is the best spread gun in the game so you just use a couple close-range mods and then just blast away into a monster's face the whole fight (works best against Kirin). And another Kulve drop but for pierce ammo which makes AT Xeno a cakewalk. Only mon I wouldn't recommend HBG against would be Luna since her special is mainly AOE chip damage that you can't guard against and you lack the speed to run away from it.

Mainly though it's just getting used to the weapon and all the different types of ammo and their recoil/reload speeds. Your slow ass moving and sheathing speed means you aren't gonna be able to chug a ton of potions so making sure you can guard is essential and then you just need to make sure you only attack when you know it's safe to (ie, when the monsters going after someone else). Definitely not the most ideal weapon for solo unless you're some kind of mega-autist with the perfect build going for a speedrun.

Generally the skills you'll want to have are:
Guard (at least 3)
Guard Up
Health Up 3
Free Element/Ammo Up 3
XenoJizza Armor Bonus (you need 3 pieces for it, strongly suggest making all his Arch armor pieces because they're some of the best in the game)
Max Might
Weakness Exploit
Crit Boost

Then for mods just go:
Shield
Then just depends on which gun you're using. I prefer just going 2 reload assist with Pickle's but you could try 2 recoil ones I guess.

Then just set up your radial menu so you can quickcraft ammo as needed (bring mats for making at the least slicing, sticky 3 and sleep 2) and bring farcasters when you need to go back to base for a refill and can't quick travel. Also after refilling all of your ammo switching weapons in the tent (I just go HBG > Bow > HBG) auto-reloads all of your ammo for you so you don't have to spend 5 minutes doing it manually.

Then just sit back and let the tears flow from everyone who don't have flinch free as they get cluster-bombed to shit.

But old habits die hard so I still end up playing support when katanas make part breaking next to impossible
It takes just 1 point in Flinch-Free to remove staggering. 1 point bruh. Come on.

I’ll also use Katanas when trying to reach high-up bodyparts without climbing, like tails or beaks
Fair enough but reeeee katanas.
I do like the azure star katana though. It helped with the ridiculously hard hitting Lavasioth event.

Ye.
I've got that on my first Hunter, but haven't quite found an armor piece that I like/can use frequently with that bonus for the lower rank hammer main. Stun and Para res are mostly that jam for now. (because Kirin.)

I always enjoyed the MHW games. Something about getting into the fighting makes me easily forget everything because I'm just so focused on killing.
I liked the research missions too. Mostly because I'd be rolling around in gems whereas in the 3DS games I'd be farming a single monster for 3 goddamn months just to get a plate. It was also a good game I used to get others into the franchise. So I'm actually excited for the new expansion.

My favorite thing they did in MHW was getting rid of gunner and blade master sets and by that I mean that you used just a single set of armor and it was the weapon you equipped that determined your defense value. It cut the time I needed to farm for things when I didn't need to farm them twice as hard to make the full gunner and blade master sets. Some people can say what they will about World but it'll always shave a special place in my heart because honestly, all the MH games are good.
