I really don't know how to feel about MH. It's a franchise built on fanhype by recycling old monsters because they haven't been in the most recent game or two, so they just drag-drop the old model in and woah! Amazing!

On the other hand, it's one of the few modern coop games that has a 'trifecta' kind of gameplay. You can be "that gun dude" or "the cool support guy", and really bring something unique to each fight. With the sling getting so many new functions, those unique angles are sort of gone. Also with the new layer of depth on the Switch MH game, where you have like 2-3 fighting styles to each weapon. It becomes so many degrees of customization, that it goes from "that hammer dude who is good at stunning" to "what 50 things can you do, again?".

All that said, I'd really like to replay it as a solo Dark Souls game. It feels rewarding to solo a monster, but MH:W being my first game, I also legitimately got angry for the first time in years at a game. You need to get so used to the game and AI to have a remote chance, that I basically needed help after 3-4 large monsters on my first playthrough, as everyone else picked a ranged weapon and just rolled through it FPS-style. MH is a unique franchise, and equally as autistic as souls. I'll always hate it for celebrating rehashing though.
Gunlance is so satisfying, and I fucking hate everything MH:W. Sticking the stick grenade thing in the face of a monster first thing and seeing the head get shot off, or just simply doing the infinite reload combo and equally blast them to shit. It's also very satisfying to just straight up block a hard-hitting attack.

Though, in my constant need for validation, you feel worthless if you're not actively tanking, and if you have bad luck, you never get even a single combo off and you're basically worthless. It's a hit-or-miss kind of weapon, but aesthetics are on point.
you: bitching about how monster hunter world feels
me: bitch, git gud
Seriously though, your first complaint of MH: W is the complaint of every single game. The difference between world and others is that there is one continuous map. No sections, except one particular mon (I mean there is but its not like past games).

Also, past monsters are used because each one provides a unique challenge. you have to pay attention to notice. Could new monsters fill those rolls? sure. but why do that? there is no reason to do that. Using old mons saves money and fulfills a unique kind of challenge.

Here. here's an easy one. What is the gameplay difference between a blagonga and a rajang? I'll wait.
note: I do in fact enjoy all monhun games and have played since tri... yes. Tri was my first game. I like monhun 3 ultimate, but i'll easily sell out tri in a heartbeat as a terrible game.

Fair enough but reeeee katanas.
I do like the azure star katana though. It helped with the ridiculously hard hitting Lavasioth event.
Ye.
I've got that on my first Hunter, but haven't quite found an armor piece that I like/can use frequently with that bonus for the lower rank hammer main. Stun and Para res are mostly that jam for now. (because Kirin.)
Pony's the only thing you should ever be using Para res for. And hurry up and get out of low rank so you can start getting actual good weapons and items.

Wasn’t tri way more linear than 3u?

I dunno about any of you but I had mixed feelings about the underwater combat in Tri. Glad they didn't put that in for World.

I mentioned this in another thread, but Dauntless is now out for PS4/CBOX. Its a F2P Monster Hunter clone, with a Fortnite style battle pass for cosmetics.

It's...not bad? Shallow, has zero atmosphere next to Monster Hunter, and there's hardly personality in the monsters, but dress up is fun and the weapons are pretty neat - personal favourite is the two sickles that can be extended on chains.

I can't see it having any long term appeal, but if you need something to bridge the gap till Iceborn it might be worth glancing at.

Isn’t God Eater supposed to be MH’s best competitor?

God Eater is the longest running competitor for MH for sure. It's between that and Toukiden for quality competition. Played a bit of GE but it didn't seem close in quality to MH. Never touched Toukiden though.

Yes. You had to play story first in order to get anywhere. Mind, I didn't know how armor skills worked and the controls only worked for lance.... so....
lagiacrus was my wall. I beat it but I didn't want to continue after it.
Eventually I picked up freedom unite then ran into hypnocatrice and gave up.
Then I played 3U, got bored, moved onto 4U.
4U was the first game I almost completely solo'd (Couldn't solo goggy)
MonGen I played almost completely online, only playing story when I had to.
Then i got world and loved it. Played mostly online but still.

Meh, I still like 3U. Especially since you can still fight shit early in it by doing online fights solo

I'd have to say 4U has my vote for the simple fact that it fixed a lot of problems I had with 3U and made the smart decision to not include swimming (I'm not a hater of it unlike some, but even I had to say it needed work and it would've been god awful on the 3ds).

As a 3DS player (got it because the WiiU servers were apparently already dead when I bought it), the swimming is abysmal in single stick, but improved with twin stick

But, but muh thunderpony farming.
(You're not wrong tho.)
I mean I get it, I beat the shit out of all the low and high rank monsters cuz I wanted to build all the armor only to learn you can't because 1k weapon/armor cap. Only real reason to grind LR mons is if you're missing mats needed for crafting/upgrading weapons and charms. None of the actual lr armor is of any use at all once you get to endgame. Sooner you get to HR the sooner you can access shit like Kulve and Arch-Temps which aren't around 24/7 like normal mons.

Beat Xeno'Jiiva last night, started having Gogmazios Flashbacks when the fight started dragging on.
Wait'll you see his fucking Arch-Temp form. One of - if not the - biggest spikes in difficulty from monster's nomal/temp version (Nergi's probably #1 because good lord though you could also make arguments for Vaal and maybe Behemoth if you think it qualifies).

The wife got us copies of 3U and holy shit the bow and arrow on the 3DS layout is unnecessarily difficult, so I can imagine two sticks improves anything.

I've played both GE (currently playing GE 3) and Toukiden (Kiwami and 2). They are good and worth the break from MH but that being said, MH outclasses them both by a landslide. Being the original and having all the fundamentals on it being near perfect, I doubt that anyone could really make a MH clone that actually gave the series a run for it's money.

Another MH clone that I absolutely adored was Soul Sacrifice. It was very unique. My problem with it though besides it being only on Vita, was that it was sort of barebones and once you finished the game, there's wasn't a huge amount of replay ability.

I really hate the monster hunter online communities. The less contact you have with the people the better, they're also ultra accusatory about calling people hackers. Like if you mess up once they start accusing you of hacking your gear because nobody makes mistakes at HR 100+.

then when they get too distracted and they fuck up because they won't stop talking, they start screaming about how you're ruining the room.

Which game we talking about here, World because I think it does probably depend on the game. I put a ton of hours into Tri on the Wii and 4U/Generations on the 3DS and had pretty good experiences. Most dudes I found were pretty helpful towards one another and shockingly on point considering no one was doing voice chat. I usually don't play with randoms in any game, but watching people you never met immediately know how to set up on a monster for some fast damage was pretty awesome. Haven't really touched much of World's online since people I know irl bailed on playing the game, but I haven't been as satisfied with it

I touched the bows for a minute and immediately recoiled back to melee. They're so much better to use in World
