There is no way on fucking Earth that Jones doesn't retire after this fight. Him saying he wants to fight Pereira is complete bullshit just to try and fail to deflect from Aspinal he will not fight either guy and I'm ready for this dude to fuck off permanently.

Jones one major fuck up imo was not vacating the hw belt when he got injured,
The difference between someone like Jiri and Jones is that Jiri lives for the sport. All of the glitz and glamour come probably tertiary. Since Jiri respectfully dropped the title, fans believe it is is now the status quo for the champion to drop their title during injury. Personally, yeah, I love to see that sort of respect for the sport and your fellow opponents in your weight division, but it’s not a requirement. Jones made it fairly clear that he wanted Stipe as a legacy fight, whatever that means, and then ride off into the sunset.

I cannot say that I understand his reasoning. Shoe on the other foot, I would want the toughest and baddest young buck to put him in his place. Jones is so obsessed with his record and reputation that he’s willing to tarnish the latter, which matters more, to protect his “0” - especially now that the 12-6 is ruled legal.

I sometimes hate how gay this sport can be, but then I realize that the co-main is a guaranteed banger and I don’t give a shit.

I wish he would, honestly. It would be so incredibly satisfying to watch Aspinal take the belt off him, or watch Pereira turn him into another paycheck. If I didn't expect him to retire I'd be hoping he wins tomorrow just so he gets a more poetic comeuppance.

But yeah I'll settle for him fucking off.

I was talking purely about what would have worked out best for Jones. If he'd vacated when he got injured, he would have got to look like the good guy, respecting the division's need to move forward etc. Now he's talking about vacating after the Stipe fight, and everyone calls him a coward for ducking Tom. Although it's possible that Stipe might have refused to fight him without the belt being on the line, personally I suspect that he would have taken it either way. So Jones has only hurt his reputation by holding on to the belt, and the only way to reverse that now is by fighting Tom.

Oliveira is looking amazing.

Chandler is gonna have to adopt another black kid to cheer himself up after this beating.

Edit: he deserves another black kid after that final round.

Damn, sure wasn't expecting that final round given how the rest of the fight went. Probably still loses by decision but maybe that'll flip it to split. Bet he spooked a bunch of gamblers for a moment.

I love Michael Chandler. He can lose every fight for the rest of his career and I’ll always mark out for him. That fifth round was one of the most entertaining things I’ve seen in a long while. He knew he was fucked after Charles took his back, so he gave the fans a show. The fucking POP throughout the arena for those backwards slams from the crowd… God damn.

I don't know how they just walk around after they've kicked the shit out of each other like that.

Main event went exactly how everyone thought it would.

I give the main card a C-. Weak event for the yearly MSG show. Ruffy v Llontop was a lot of fun. I already marked out about the Chandler v Oliveria fight above, but even that was pretty lopsided until the end. I took no joy in watching Stipe get beaten. Pretty underwhelming. I don’t even care that I lost money, this felt like it should have been held at the Apex. Good Fight Night card, very disappointing for a marquee event.

I had a good enough time, and even got my wish: Jones didn't retire, which means either
  1. Jones gets put down by Aspinal in the most cathartic conclusion to this bullshit possible,
  2. Jones gets fed to Pereira,
  3. Jones abdicates the title, or
  4. Jones continues to sit on the belt and shit up the division but also his reputation.
I choose to hope for one of the former.

Honestly I think watching boxing last night just reminded me to be grateful that I get to watch MMA at all because holy shit boxing is fucking boring.
