If there is one thing USA is good at, it's creating hostile governments. Good luck with that.
The US historically doesn't really care how they feel as long as they aren't functional enough to host warships and/or nukes from the other side of the planet. It's very much a devil-you-know-or-devil-you-don't situation, I'll grant it, but from the US side it's basically just common sense. You wouldn't want to let anyone else get a foothold in any case, keep that shit over there. The resources are just icing on the cake.

But this isn't what this thread is really about now, is it?

Welp, here's the M1E3 prototype

Looks to have a 100% unmanned turret and will have avery efficient hybrid engine

Saw on twitter. Very tall lol. Other than that, I expect most of the benefits are just weight and handling with the suspension, and that new engine efficiency. Looks a bit more armored too.

Its been finally confirmed Pakistan lost at least one flying F-16 in May 2025.

A Block 15 jets from the 1980s....

Of course the Indians will be jerking themselves off into a frenzy over this.... Meanwhile they lost a brand new Rafale and China officially confirmed it was shot down by a J-10CE.

Note I'll be getting the Tom Cooper book about the war in a bit (hopefully used) and I'll post pics here

The Chieftain Interviews a project lead on the M1E3 program. Seems very sensible and down to earth what the Army wanted.
Beat me to the punch.

SepV4 is dead they have ~24 or so of them and that's it.

Current M1A2 baseline for the Army is the SepV3

Th M1E3 is an early prototype/tech demonstrator

Unmanned turret (BIG change for the US Army). If that sticks it'll probably mean the upcoming Europanzer disaster (Franco/German tank) will probably be a remote turret too.

3 man crew (ask the French, Japanese and S. Koreans how they manage)

3 guys up front in a capsule, ohh NO MORE TORSION BARS (external hydragas suspension units)

Autoloaders... Meggit figured it out ~25 years ago, the French did 35 years ago.

Still using the standard 120mm from the M1A2 SePv3

It'll be a solid 7 tons lighter than the SepV3 which is a great amount although I have a feeling they'll try and cut a solid 10 tons.

Caterpillar diesel engine w/ hybrid drivetrain (this is be a GIGANTIC fuel efficiency improvement). Also a reason the torsion bars were dropped.. Reading between the lines, the Army didn't want to buy a foreign engine.

This is probably the most important tank program the US Army has initiated since the OG XM1

Note that the unmanned turret means if your sensors are occluded/destroyed the tank is a total mission kill.

The M1/A1/A2 all have a nifty backup telescopic sight on the gun mantled

AbramsX was just a GDLS tech demo (eg. XM360 on that canon isn't finished..... Yet)

So the current M256 is JUST fine especially seeing the hilarious state of Russian armor in Ukraine.

That said they'll probably love a lighter, higher performance gun in the future.

The program seems to be coming along well and hasn't gotten assaulted by the Good Idea fairy (I'm actually SHOCKED). LOADS of COTS or in production parts on the M1E3.

Edit, there is mention of the notional 2 man crew of the XM30..... JESUS CHRIST that is a stupid idea

Sounds like this will be an Abrams in a atheistics only.

Though I wonder how the hell you're fitting 3 people up front by the driver?

Still.

I've driven an Abrams and it's absolutely cramped as a normal sized dude. Those guys are gonna be higher than nut to butt.
Yep

They glacis plate is higher and zero torsion bars mean a bit more interior Volume. You could also have the seats be staggered or semi tandem

The Chieftain also mentioned the challenges of maintenance and manual back controls/sights.

Will there be a blast door behind the crew so they can wiggle under the turret and manually crank it and use a telescopic/periscope sight and manually crank the auto loader and fire the canon and Coax?

Probably

Or will the turret have a maintenance hatch/hatches in the roof for access via both the crew capsule and the turret?

What if the cameras get occluded by mud/ice/snow or even better, frozen mud, ashes, white phosphorus, thick diesel smoke, and similar or a fun combination?

If you lose the cameras/sensors on a normal M1 you can have the TC pop his hatch into umbrella mode (or if he's Israeli fully open) and get out the binoculars ....can you on the M1E3? If he is looking around, he'll be lower then the turret with crap SA to his rear and above rear.

I'd guess the hatches will have some sort of periscopes while most visuals will be through camera feeds

There she is, the Flight 1 FF(X)

Will have missile containers on the fantail. NSM or Hellfires (Hellfires can be anti surface or anti air)

I'd bet money flight 2 and beyond will get slight size increase and a 16 cell Mk.41 VLS for ESSM/PAC3/SM-2 and ASROC and a hull mounted sonar.
