I just remembered that in mgs 4 you can kill Screaming Mantis by stealing her dolls and using the motion controls, how will they make that work on the next collection? Will they just take it out for all versions?
So the ps3 didnt have only six-axis controls in fact they had to stop making them because of a lawsuit so all those inputs already had alternatives, that includes the fact that you could tilt the controller down to lob grenades or tilt up for overhand. That said the sony controllers still have that function and since theres only one version of mgs4 its possible itll still work if you have the right hardware, if not i think its just wiggle the left stick or mash a button i forget.
>implying Konami can be bothered to port MGS4
The fact that the one that just released is called Vol. 1 means were obviously getting more (though I shouldn't put it past Konami). MGSV wouldn't make sense so that really only leaves PW and 4. Regardless of any other things thatd get bundled in those 2 would need to be there to sell a vol. 2. Ghost babel, PO, Acid 1/2 and MG3 all exist and could be potential stocking stuffers but if PW and 4 arent there they're not selling a Vol. 2 and they probably (again, konami) know that.

The last time I played MGS3 was on PS2 with a CRT TV and whhoooooo boy let me tell you, coming from that to now playing on PC in 60fps 720p with headphones is sublime. I can actually spot enemies from afar and hear their footsteps when nearby. On the original hardware my general awareness in-game was abyssmal even with Subsistance's camera improvements but now it feels like playing a new game. I regret not having tried emulating it and realising this earlier but that's my fault. For these reasons I'm having a fucking ball playing it again. I just wish they added the ability to pause cutscenes at the very least.

I forgot to mention, that during the fight with the Boss when the 5 minute mark hits and Snake Eater starts playing... the game bugged out for about 30 seconds with the game stuttering audio with the game frozen. It eventually righted itself but this 5 second segment of the theme just kept looping. This game is FUBAR. I never had a single issue with the original HD col.
lol, we're in the Capcom scenario where they borderline fail the test even with the answer sheet in their other hand. I can only imagine how they will fuck up other ports in the future

Considering how lazy these ports are, I'm not sure there's any reason to buy this collection instead of just emulating it all.
I bought the collection on the Nintendo Switch, through Amazon JP as a digital code (at a lesser price), for the personal convenience factor. Technically it's the first time I play the MGS games too despite watching friends playing them beforehand, so the Switch version was an excuse to get into these titles finally.

I dunno if "lazy" is the correct word considering Konami went out to include nice things like the fake PS1 memory card feature for MGS1 (which differs between MGS Original and Integral btw) but the Collection as a whole package was sure handled weirdly.

For example, the English versions had to be actually downloaded in-game, something that was not explicitly detailed (the international DLCs were also hidden from view on the eshop page by default), thus considerably increasing the initial filesize of the three games:
MGS1 : 4GB -> 5.7GB
MGS2 : 9 GB -> 12.3GB
MGS3 : 10 GB -> 17.8GB
I initially assumed the default filesize was from having the US and JP versions in-built at the very least.
This is again due of obtaining the Collection from Japan, the average Joe here won't meet that kind of problem in reverse unless curious enough to play the JP versions.

Another disappointing thing is that the savedata is not compatible between the JP and European/American versions within the collection, so progress cannot be shared between each other. By comparison, all three games in the Super Mario 3D Collection on Switch shared the same savedata regardless I would change the language at some point or another. A friend of mine was looking forward to play the MGS games with Japanese voices + English subtitles (for the novelty) in the Collection but was sad when he realized it wasn't possible.

Switch MGS Collection physical - download disclaimer.jpg
As an anecdote, Japanese user reviews were heavily criticizing the poor packaging of the Switch physical since all it contains are Metal Gear 1 + 2 and MGS1 (with the rest as download codes), despite a 32GB cartridge could have easily regrouped all of the games. I recall the Playstation Vita cartridge had MGS 2 & 3 altogether and Vita physicals were a lot more limited in storage size back then (4GB max).

Don't ask me why, but I went to the MGS subreddit. It's kind of sad to see just how many Kojima fanboys are playing MGS 1-3 for the very first fucking time.

Imagine becoming a fanboy for this guy based off only playing MGS V or Death Stranding.

I'm a massive Quentin Tarantino fan. I think he's a phenomenal writer/director that revolutionized movies, and he's a super-genius.

My favourite Tarantino movie? Well, I've never actually watched one of his movies, but-

It still completely baffles me the hype around MGSV, to the point I feel like I didn't play the same game as these people.

I was hugely disappointed after the Afghanistan part because I realized that's all there is. At first I was like "this is cool" cause I thought Snake controlled really well.

But there's just nothing there at all. Infinite Heaven helped extend the life of it for me for like a year but even then it got old.

Recently I've been replaying the games and I'm starting to realize I think I like MGS the most because while it's still clearly a video game, I feel it took itself a lot more seriously than MGS 2 and MGS 3. It's not even just the main characters becoming more autistic as the games went on, but just like...it feels like there was a lot less wacky jokey shit in the codec/radio as well.

It makes me wonder how the original Japanese version is, since the American localization took so many liberties with the game.

What confuses me the most about MGSV is how it's claimed how "well" it plays.

Am I alone in thinking it's barely anymore than Peace Walker, which was a chopped down version of Snake Eater with a couple new quirks? How your feet clip the littlest rock on a hill and you gotta go around. How the enemy AI is horrificly stupid and less threatening than the PS2 era? That there's no flora or fauna compared to MGS3? That the grass blades are just 2D jpegs that don't move that are clustered together when you can bend individual grass blades in MGS3?

How the only legitimate boss fights in it is Quiet and the ST84 and it's so shit?

How do you take the two biggest innovators of gameplay in the series like MGS3/4 and you completely gut the fun mechanics that were in those in place of a shitty console version of PW?

Its a downgrade from PW, no coop, far less weapon/gear variety, no bosses. Also the movement is shit, the dive is the only immediate action. Fun tools like the tank box and railgun aren't there, there's no melee options even though the knife is in MGO.

Just Kojima Things. He *really* wanted to do an open world and that's all he was going to do.
That's the whole case for making MGSV in a nutshell. He saw GTAV, got jealous of it's success and proved that the series has no business being open world and needs to stay carefully constructed setpieces. It's why MGS3 is so good because it feels open world and the linearness of it is hidden with it's perfect level design.

IIRC, Kojima started expressing wanting to do open world MGS around the time he started developing MGS3. I think he even stated Vice City was what inspired this and why they had the Vice City joke in the MGS3 reveal trailer.

It's just sad that the culmination of those dreams ended up being such a wet fart. If he wanted to keep the Peace Walker thing going, it should have been more open "missions" like the modern Hitman games do it. Multiple options, multiple paths in a structured environment.

But, hey, what the fuck do I know. I'm not god like Kojima.

At least 4 had a reason to exist, it gave the series an ending and wrapped up the main storyline, whatever it was. 5 was almost entirely pointless in terms of the overall series. Also the gameplay in 5 was terrible.

I think we all know the best Metal Gear game is the one Kojima had little to do with: Metal Gear Rising.
5/GZ DID have a purpose: show Naked Snake turning into Big Boss and going evil since hardly any normies bought the PSP and THEN set up the True "the circle closes" ending of the franchise: the remaking of MG 1 and 2 in 3D modern graphics and gameplay and MG1 rewritten to allow for BB to escape and set up his appearance in MG2.

Remaking MG 1+2 to fit the modern gameplay and visual astetic of the Solid games would have been a HUGE no brainier and would have made Konami big bank. Plus bring the series a more satisfying ending in terms of full circle ending.
