The problem is Kojima was done writing after 3 but caved in to fan demand for more. I don't hate 4 but I wish it had more actual gameplay. Phantom Pain was absolutely unfinished. I still have my collectors edition with the disc showing the cut ending. I didn't think it was bad, but the side ops got repetitive real fast and I didn't even bother doing them all. It really needed more substance and less filler.

Here's the thing, after pretty much every MGS he said he was done, then he came back every time. I figure it was a marketing-tier thing, get his name out there more consistently. "Oh no, the hallowed and peerless Metal Gear creator might leave Konami." - IGN article #5.

Went back to MGSV for probably the 5th time and I still don't like it. As someone who loved the sandbox elements in 3 and played the hell out of that, it baffles me how V has gained the reputation of "best gameplay in the series". For one, you've got an "open-world" that only lets you travel along specific paths to encounter guard outposts at pretty much the same angle each time with minimal options to route around them, and the guard pathing is often actually simpler than it was in 3, meaning that for any given outpost there's only a couple ways to go through it. The areas also seem as if they were designed with a completely different process from how they were designed in the classic Metal Gear entries, as if MGS 1-3 levels were probably drafted up as a VR missions sort of thing and then converted into levels to make sure they're fun, whereas for V, levels were drafted up through concept art and put together without much thought into how they'd actually play to make them look good. Sad considering Ground Zeroes was such a good level.

There's also the animations and how they got the same treatment as RE4 remake where they're no longer snappy and now have lots of weight and momentum. Naked Snake himself lacks the refined control of his body that Big Boss and Solid Snake have, and instead just throws himself at the ground and shit which is pretty immersion breaking, since for someone who's supposed to be stealthy the way he moves is unnecessarily loud. The (default) controls are also just shit, with weapon swapping mapped to the D-pad for some reason so you can't swap while moving (can't use the right hand to do this because you need the right analog stick to change equips). Also, pushing the control stick inward to sprint is awkward, and having the horse's sprint button map to the X button/square is retarded; what other game uses the button furthest away from your thumb for sprinting, the one you're going to be holding for the longest amount of time? Why is there so much unnecessary life sim/base building shit tacked on to this game when the basic mechanics are so incomplete?

Also, the fact that good items come from the progression system and not from the levels makes exploring Afghanistan way more boring knowing you won't find anything cool. I can't understand how this is meant to be the peak of Metal Gear gameplay, it's such a step backwards. I'm guessing it's because they put a progression slop system on the game that people praise it. It's on a low tier out of the stealth games that I've played. Willing to hear any defenses for it but 13 hours in and it still seems pretty bad.

I tried playing MGSV today.

I fucking hated it.

I found myself viscerally hating how hokey and self indulgent the fucking tutorial was. The Magical Zombie on Fire was particularly one of the things I just loathe. You're telling me a tank running over it does nothing, but just a few minutes afterwards, Snake can deter it with a regular ass shotgun. And that's just one of many things I found myself having such a reaction.

Sure, the gameplay still amused me once I could control Snake off rails, but then I rescued Miller and had to run away from the M.A.R.Y.S.U.E. Squad.

Just fuck it into the dirt.

YouTube just served me this in my recommended again and I on a whim decided to do a quick search here, it's never actually been put in this thread before. So I'll do it myself because it's just so kino.
God the theme at the end is so good too.

MGS4 and 5 sold way more and I doubt this will even get half as much as either title eventually got.
Metal Gear Solid 4 sold like 1 million copies on release, and MGS V sold 3 million but was also the first game that was multiplatform at launch.

Fun Fact: MGS1 is tied for second best selling MGS game with MGSV at 8 million sales total. And it didn't have the hype machine behind it that MGS V had. MGS2 is number one with a little under 7.5 million.

Man, I am so rusty.
Been a while since I played MGS3.
Game look good.

Try to remember the basics of CQC.

Gaming was a smaller world in 1998, but I do remember MGS getting a ton of hype in the gaming press. It was one of those "gaming is growing up and becoming a big deal" things - it was the next "event" after FFVII and arguably showed a more mature side of gaming that didn't involve magic or zombies.

(Are MGS and V tied with 7m each, not 8m?)

Yeah, sorry. I was being retarded. I know MGS2 is only ahead by about half a million. MGS 1 and MGS V is 7 million and MGS2 is 7.5 million. (or at least based on number I saw from like two years ago)

MGS definitely had hype in 1998, but I don't think it was on the same level as MGS V tbh. The biggest thing I remember seeing outside of the "gaming bubble" was the inclusion on the Pizza Hut demo disks that year. (although I was only like 9 or 10 years old so maybe I just missed it)

MGS V had all sorts of merchandise tie ins and such. There was the tie in with Triumph motorcycles, I think there was a small line of MGS Puma clothing as well. At least some boots they produced. I'd argue a lot of the MGS V promotion was stupid as fuck and a waste, though. It honestly stunk of deals Kojima made before he got shit canned.

Ok, I find the new controls to be a bit clunky so far.
It feels stiff at parts.
When you're trying to remain in one spot and rotate Snake to face another direction is the worst, because of course he now has to have more realistic animations for turning and starting in to a run. Need to use first person view a lot more just to help move him more precisely.

Again it pisses me off because of all the other non-realistic videogamey stuff that remains. The movement is the one thing that definitely shouldn't be changed at all if there were no problems with it before. Fuck realism dood this is meant to be MGS.

Edit: Is a classic movement overhaul mod possible? If so I'm going to be all over it if it happens.

Getting rid of the bloody screen and the sneaking vignette are essential in any case. Try navigating that cave after Ocelot with barely any health left, as if you already couldn't see shit.

This is very nit picky, but I am not a real fan of the new intro.
A reason is that it basically spoil the whole game and show what will happen.
I don’t remember the old intro doing it.
Also, did they move the splitter camo?
I looked where it is suppose to be, and I couldn’t find it in the swamp. I am sure it was there in the OG.
