NB4 the nerds recommend 50+ games.

The must plays are:

2 (even though I think it's overrated)
4 (the best of the classic series)
6 (changes the gameplay)
7

Fan game but officially endorsed by Capcom: Mega Man X Street Fighter.

X1
X4 (you finally get to play as Zero the entire time)
X5 if you want to play more of the same and want obnoxious tutorial messages

The Power Battle 1 and 2
And Mega Man 11.
 
There is no reason to skip X2 and X3, it's just odd. X6 is also for real Gs.
 
X2 & X3 are the only other MMX games aside from X1 that I can unconditionally recommend. The rest have some caveats.

Unfortunately, there are a shocking amount of self-proclaimed fans who only played X1 and X4. Or, in other words, the popular ones. And X1 is actually starting to slip, comparatively.

That's too bad, because X1 really is the best. X2 & X3 could've been just as good if they were balanced a bit better, the difficulty kept spiking with each entry.

I'll never forget one of the X games being plagued by some unavailable shadows attacking you throughout every stage. It almost felt like a glitch it was so bad.

They're kinda just remixed stages from X1-X3, but Xtreme 1 & 2 are solid games too.
 
X3 with zero project honestly makes it one of the best X games
X5 and 6 are way more tolerable with patches that fix some of the biggest issues(I still think X5 is shit and do plan on giving x6 another shot with the tweaks mod)

also x6 had alia fail to stop X from being gay for zero
 
I never minded slow dialogue boxes like some people do. Unless there's an obscene amount of text and it's extremely slow then I don't see the problem.

Maybe it's just me but I swear, coming off X1, the box rendering and the text printing felt slower in the next 2 games than it was before.

Fujos can stick with the manga where X is a crybaby Gary Stu who everyone (including Zero) is jealous of. They gotta have their seme/uke dynamic, I guess.

IMO, the demand to make whatever canon is silly. Some fandoms are absolutely nuts with pairing everything and everyone; I swear, the YuGiOh fandom has a name for every ship possible, no matter how absurd. "Oh they looked at each other for 5 minutes, they're totally gay for each other!" sort of shit. I never really read fanfiction, but if those clowns can pretend Seto Kaiba and Amelda is canon, then anything goes. Who gives a shit if it's canon? Have fun!

Also, bitches can't handle Sigma because he's too masculine.

That's actually one of the cope lines. That either the manga is canon, or because somewhere a dev said that they took some inspiration from the manga for X4 on, that somehow means Zero is gay. They then get very defensive if you point out that Zero attacks X over Iris.

Something like that actually, literally, happened recently. The cover of the X Dive artbook had X and RiCO looking at each other, so people started shipping them.

Hahaha, that doesn't surprise me. A lot of yaoi fangirls talk about stuff as if they're definitively canon. It gets me kind of mixed up, like when someone claimed reploids canonically cannot sing. I don't know if this is actually canon but it feels like one of those things that would make X speshul.

It's okay if people find it hawt imo, as long as they don't claim it's canon. I think a lot of people feel like they need to justify stuff like that, which I get, but past a certain point you have to admit you're just a horny bastard.

ETA: Sometimes stuff about what's canon confuses me. The manga is its own thing, so it's not mainstream canon, but I don't think it's unreasonable to specifically stick with the manga if you want to claim it's canon within the manga.

I have gotten into an autism fight or two because some capeshit stuff "wasn't canon". It wasn't shipping related however, and not really the topic of this thread, but it's a point of contention I have with fans of things with multiple continuities.

X3 is the best x game, how can someone not play it, let alone recommend against it? all 3 SNES x games are pure gold if you ask me, especially X3 with the fully playable zero hack.

Since you edited this in, I'll expound a little more: not only is this a thing, but you can bait a good chunk of the fujos in the fandom by saying Zero bottoms. For some very strange reason they are very invested in the idea that Zero is some kind of rapey top.
