It's the epitome of the "it gets good half way through, I promise" mindset. It's not until like the late teens when it really feels like its moving.

I was referring more to when a new villain gets introduced and Basara's actions and the intent of the aliens begin to get clearer.

19 episodes into M7. Oh hey, I just realized that worked as an abbreviation.

There's definitely a shift in vibes once episode 17 hits. A new post-OP crawl that both recaps events and offers some exposition on details that'll likely help going forward, and a new antagonist with no machine at all in Sibil who's directly reacting to Basara's music and heckling City 7 like a magical girl villain.
The music having explicit magic properties will likely get as obnoxious as the repetitive use of Planet Dance, but I'm more annoyed with how Gamlin goes and gets Milia's VF-1 destroyed in battle, meaning Milia and Mylene are likely never going to be combatants for the rest of the show. Doesn't help that they're making lighthearted jokes about Mylene sitting on the sidelines making coffee for Gamlin.

Yeah, Gamlin is a guy who needs all his Spiritia drained. Easily one of my least favourite anime characters; it's Mushoku Tensei-tier pedo apologism.
 
I broke down and started watching Shin Mazinger because I needed an adrenaline boost, and holy cow this is cool. I watched the first episode a while ago and stopped because I was annoyed by the amount of exposition and wasn't very impressed by Mazinkaiser, but this is actually well-made. The cinematography is great -- for some reason the Go Nagai reboot shows tend to have unusually excellent direction and cinematography -- and I like how they made the action both over-the-top like Mazinkaiser and weighty and suspenseful like the 70s anime by giving everything a big meaning TTGL-style. I'm also impressed that they bothered to remember Groizer X.

Macross 7, that's a good one. Have an open mind about it and try not to compare it to the older ones too much, it's a nice change of pace from generic robot war crap. The "power of music" remains crucial to the plot through to the end, but if you roll with it you will have a good time. It's a nice, lighthearted oddity for this series.

The only thing I really hated about it was what they did to Max and Milia's relationship, that was criminal and it would have been better if they weren't in it at all.

If you end up liking the TV series, I highly recommend checking out the Macross 7 Plus shorts, The Galaxy is Calling Me mini movie, and the Dynamite 7 OVA (god tier soundtrack and animation). The OVA is short and focuses mostly on one character's adventure on another planet, it's also a bit darker than the show but I actually think it has a better story

That was irksome at first but the payoff at the end with their relationship is so damn good.

My only question is why there's like one mention of their first daughter (the baby in the original Macross) and she doesn't even show up as a cameo.

Shin Mazinger was the first mecha anime I watched that got me into the genre, as far as I remember; the action scenes, music, everything is fantastic. Through I do think the story is a bit messy, and the cliffhanger ending kinda drag it down a bit (why is the first episode taking place after the finale? it confuses the hell out of me why they did that in the first place).

I think it was a great gateway entry into the genre for me, it lead me to eventually watch Mazinkaiser, Kaiser SKL, Daiguard and then Getter Robo, I really do wish there was a Great Shin Mazinger, sad the series never got a continuation; through I do hear in the SRW games it continued the story.
 
Finished Macross Plus. While the whole thing is really pretty and the music is great, the last episode feels like a big letdown character-wise - Guld remembering something the rest of the audience knew by the first episode, Isamu learning nothing at all, and the good guys winning through lazy authorial fiat.

Also 39 episodes into Seven. It's honestly surprising it took this long to have a recap clip show episode, but then I guess a lot of this show's episodes are packed with enough recycled footage to ease the burden of production.

the movie's ending still has the same "oh yeah, I was Earth all along" but most of the rest ends up playing out a lot better
 
Episode 42. Basara's uncompromising ego is once again hurting my enjoyment. In an episode about how Basara needs to ease up his strength to sync with the rest of the team, the problem is instead resolved by Mylene having to compromise for him. Jackass couldn't at least consider moving further from Grabil instead of forcing Mylene to further endanger herself by getting closer to the supersized space devil.
 
And I'm finished Macross Seven, including Dynamite. I'm kinda tempted to call Seven a magical girl series intertwined with mecha stuff.
Not really any strong feelings otherwise. Just a few lingering gripes about Basara's attitude problems. Also Dynamite being worthless fluff with a gratuitous date rape scene in it that I still had no choice but to watch lest the voices in my head tell me I didn't finish the show.
