Max Payne 1 and 2 are my examples of a good new game to start back to back. I don't believe film noir was ever used properly in video games but I'm saluting Max Payne for being the first one to make it be taken seriously without having to go through those stupid tropes that make it a joke. Can't say much on the third since I never played it.
Having recently replayed through the first one, I am pleasantly surprised on how well it holds up, especially with all the modern day fixes that went into it. The choice of using a graphic novel to tell the story, as opposed to clunk as shit early 00 3D was an inspired choice, and helped it retain a certain timelessness. A bit of a bitch to get running on modern systems though.

Max Payne 1 and 2 have aged like fine wine, Max Payne 3 will age like cheese(and arguably already has). I say this as someone who actually liked Max Payne 3 and played through it twice.

Max Payne 3 is my favorite out of the trilogy, it's just not really a Max Payne game. It feels tonally closer to GTA IV than anything, which makes sense because it was made during Dan Hauser's edgy "I can be dark and serious too!" phase.

That gunplay is just so good that it makes up for the tonal clashes with the previous games and attempts to be grounded in a series about an ex cop killing thousands of people by slow mo diving with akimbo pistols.

Max Payne 3's multiplayer servers were closed.

The other two Max Paynes were added via BC as well. Although, I feel with the removal of 3's multiplayer, it feels incomplete.

Still crashes during single player while the Brazil map doesn't.

The multiplayer was fun, but I never felt like I was in enough control to invest a ton of time into it.

I feel like Max Payne 3 gets an unfair rap at times. It definitely is different from the first two games and you can't exactly run and gun as effectively as them, but it still has it's own charm to it and is a solid third-person shooter. It's OST is kickass too.

I always felt the best way to view it is like the first two games are sequels to each other with the third one somewhat of like an epilogue game. It's kind of it's own thing that wraps up a few other loose ends and tells it's own story separate from the others.

The comic book approach was a bit of a surprise for me on my first playthrough, it added more of a visual charm to tell its story. I kinda wished we got a graphic novel of Max Payne, its a shame they didn't do one since that was one of the aspects people liked about the first two games.

Rockstar produced a small series to tie into Max Payne 3

I enjoyed MP3 multiplayer purely because I played a Spanish chick who had a ridiculous amount of variety in her taunts and barks. I had no idea what she was saying, but she said it so angrily.

Coming in just to say how goddamn nostalgic Max Payne was for me as a super young kid. It was one of the few PC games my dad liked to play.

Admittedly I was always too pussy to play it myself. Shit was spooky back then to my dumb brain. I have it bought on Steam (and I still own the original box+CD for it) but finding a straightforward guide on how to try to run the damn game is a pain in the ass for me.

I was very, very good at Max Payne 3's multiplayer. Like, people always used to accuse me of hacking. It was pretty typical for me to get 60+ kills in a match. I wasn't hacking or anything, I just had my character set up in a very, very broken way, lol. Military Goggles, Sutures, Quick Holster and Vampire Fangs. An M4 as a primary, and dual 1911s with compensators and extended mags as secondary. This perk combo was hilariously busted and basically allowed me to mow down three or four people at a time, regenerating health from each kill.

Max payne 1 is an absolute classic.

2 is good but really short.

3 was a very unexpected but extremely pleasant surprise. They went in a really fresh direction with the character.

I remember when the first promo image came out there was a lot of controversy because people were like... "why the fuck did you make max bald?" "this isnt max payne" and such and such. I think the original plan was to start out with that bald design and they had to delay it to add more levels leading up to that.

I dont think the look would have worked as well if they didn't show Max's gradual deterioration. Absolute genius how they show max in his "prime" in new york and then just completely take him out of his element. I can understand some confusion and disappointment over it, but wouldn't have changed a thing about 3. It's a nice character study of max and a dam fun game to boot.

The ending in particular, was satisfying enough that I would be fine if they never made another game after this.

I sucked at it, but my favorite part was being able to run around in the classic Max Payne skin.

Eh... I kinda feel like more should have been done with Mona instead "Oh, it was just a thing and yada yada yada..." And Max shaving his head instead of his beard was... yeck. I would have liked for him to go full Man on Fire "kill literally everyone" mode like he was hunting down V dealers or the Cleaners, but eh... can't have everything.

Handwaving Mona was kind of the most realistic thing they could do without bringing her back. It literally was just kind of a thing, especially when you also kind of handwave the final frame of Max Payne 2 as well.
