I started another playthrough a little while back and I stalled out when I got to the ME2 DLC. 2 has the worst gameplay IMO, and there's almost zero story content in the DLC because they couldn't get the voice actors for your squadmates for some reason. It's so boring

I really want to play shotgun and being full defensive with biotics. Is a class i'm very interested.
Vanguard isn't really any more defensive than anything else in 2 or 3, and even in 1 I'm pretty sure Immunity can/could (LE fucking sucks because you can't get infinite Marksman/Immunity anymore) make you "more immortal" than whatever Vanguard got (was it Barrier?). In 1 you're more or less just an Adept, but with a shotgun (which doesn't really matter because lolsingularity), and in 2/3 you rely more on Charge barrier restore and a 1-2 seconds of damage immunity after your barrier breaks. It's fun as fuck, but there's a couple of things to consider:
  • Some maps in 2 won't let you charge some enemies (Grunt recruitment mission is probably the worst), which kinda sucks because shotguns in 2 have really bad damage falloff, so you need to be in melee range to get most/any damage.
  • Charge in 2 can be a bit of a pain in the ass in general. It's rare, but you *will* get in a situation where you just can't use it for some reason, or worse, you *do* use it, but it doesn't actually do anything. Moving around or changing targets fixes it, but it still sucks.
  • Claymore is fucking awesome in both 2 and 3 (to the point where I used it on every single class in 3 because fuck it, it's just that good), but you need to "reload cancel" so it's actually usable. In LE 2 they broke something (big fucking surprise), so occasionally you get softlocked when trying to melee after shooting, which is really "fun". Works great in "vanilla" though.
  • Geth Shotgun in 2 is OP (mostly because it has way higher effective range on top of very good damage), but not as fun as Claymore.

On that I disagree. ME1 has gameplay that's essentially incredibly charming because Bioware didn't know how to develop a 3rd person shooter so it's so inept to be charming. After a while the entire cover-based system collapses amongst OP abilities and weapon mods.

ME2 is more refined. I'd argue that ME2 DLCs have far improved combat, with Lair of the Shadow Broker having legitimately good boss fights for a Bioware game. The writing is completely dogshit as it presumes you venerate Liara but that's beyond the point.

Geth Shotgun in 2 is OP

I mistakenly unlocked and equipped it at the start of my last Vanguard playthrough. Thanks, Bioware, now everything else is obsolete and I have to play the ENTIRE game with the same gun because everything else is completely inferior.

Insanity.

It's super effective™, but I never liked that gun. There's also the fact that it has the retarded charge mechanic, so it fires on button release rather than button press, which you'd think doesn't matter but it fucking does. And now I'm getting flashbacks of running a shotgun Infiltrator with this thing. Pretty sure if you started charging it before you cloaked you could fire it without de-cloaking, which made it even more broken. Thanks, Bioware.

ME1 is by far the most RPG of all three games, which is why its the easiest to become a living avatar of death via gear and skill combos. My last run in ME1, both LE and not, was on Insanity with a Soldier specced into Shock Trooper, and by the time I hit Virmire the only thing that worried me was getting nailed by multiple rocket drones at the same time.

Shit, I even managed to make it through Pinnacle Station on Insanity.

it's pretty much known that a shotgun soldier is the real shit rather than vanguard on pretty much all ME's but you don't get to dive at enemies.
shotguns, since WW1 dominating everything.

Honestly J think any new Mass Effect game is doomed
Still wild that the new owners are allowing BioWare to go on as they have been for the past 20 years, despite the fact NuEA is neck deep in debt and needs to make as much money as possible.

All they're going to end up with is another decade of dev hell, hundreds of millions wasted, and a Veilguard 2.0 on their hands.

The only way to salvage BioWare is to literally fire everyone working there and start from scratch.

Na, I ran with an assault rifle. No need for me to carry a shotgun with my boy Wrex around. And with Garrus "Headshot" Vakarian carrying his sniper rifle, no need for that either.

The abilities and weapon mods were exactly why I had so much fun in Mass Effect. I had a sniper with high explosive rounds slamming ragdolling enemies around the map like they're on roller skates. In ME2 I have... Waiting in cover. On lower difficulties, it's way too easy, and on insanity it's boring for a different reason, because you're forced to spend a lot of time waiting for shields and cooldowns. There's basically no RPG character progression in ME2, you just find a better gun at a certain point. There's really only one gun per weapon type that you should be using, there's no build variety or player expression. There's also no tanking and every class gets access to decent weapons, so soldier is basically a worthless class in ME2 which is depressing. ME3 is a little better, but you still can't have anywhere near as much fun as in Mass Effect. Ironically, Andromeda fixed a lot of the problems that ME2 and 3 had and might have the best combat in the series, it's just a shame the story is raw hotdog water.

I take the janky, power-creeped, and fun combat in ME1 over the tedious combat in ME2.

ME2 had all sorts of shit like this.
  • Half the classes (Adept, Sentinel, Engineer) were stuck with a SMG as one of their only weapons (unless you wanted a slow firing pistol) until halfway through the game, and the one the game gave you was crap. The only others were one you got in the second half of the game, or one that was unlocked with DLC but you could play early. Thanks Bioware, well done.
  • Giving sniper-wielding squadmates one of the sniper rifles (Incisor I think) made them death machines because while the player had recoil and bullet spread, squadmates did not. Of course LE moved all acquired guns into random stores so instead of having it from the beginning for free, you had to go scan planets or sell organs for cash. Thanks, Bioware, well done.

ME2 is barely an RPG. Most of the builds are illusions of choice, there's only one way to go. Bonus power gives you some flexibility but most of the powers are garbage and you're picking Energy Drain or Reave. Of course all the decisions don't amount to anything.

ME1 LE has good combat because it has some neat guns in it, which for some reason they never bothered porting to other games. ME2 arguably has the worst combat in the series now. Combined with a story that doesn't tie into the rest of the series, it's almost skippable.

Ever combine HE rounds with a shotgun?

Infiltrator get bullet time when aiming a sniper rifle
Bullet time + Widow = FUCK YOU.

Oh, and they get that shit in ME3 still, where's there's even nastier sniper rifles like the Javelin and Black Widow. Fuckers had to nerf the Revenant into the fucking ground though, and the Typhoon is a mediocre replacement on account of the recoil, wind up, and screen shake. To make matters worse there's the Phaeton, which is "Revenant, but better in every way". Bitch, I'm a super soldier, is it too fucking hard to ask for a space M60 that doesn't suck balls?
