The abilities and weapon mods were exactly why I had so much fun in Mass Effect. I had a sniper with high explosive rounds slamming ragdolling enemies around the map like they're on roller skates. In ME2 I have... Waiting in cover. On lower difficulties, it's way too easy, and on insanity it's boring for a different reason, because you're forced to spend a lot of time waiting for shields and cooldowns. There's basically no RPG character progression in ME2, you just find a better gun at a certain point. There's really only one gun per weapon type that you should be using, there's no build variety or player expression. There's also no tanking and every class gets access to decent weapons, so soldier is basically a worthless class in ME2 which is depressing. ME3 is a little better, but you still can't have anywhere near as much fun as in Mass Effect. Ironically, Andromeda fixed a lot of the problems that ME2 and 3 had and might have the best combat in the series, it's just a shame the story is raw hotdog water.
I take the janky, power-creeped, and fun combat in ME1 over the tedious combat in ME2.
