Like another poster here, it's basically Americans cosplaying as Africans and I recall some YouTuber refer to it as African kitsch.Absolutely incompatible and oxymoronic, but how else can you visually communicate Afrofuturism if not through savage retard caveman traits?
My theory as to why so-called intellectuals and artists indulge in this style is the simplistic premise that Africa would have been a highly advanced utopia had Europeans not arrived on the continent. For race grifters like Ta-Nehisi Coates, I imagine it largely has to do with their wounded egos over race relations in the United States and the concept of Wakanda serves to soothe their collective butt-hurt. They want to believe that whitey put a stop to it out of jealousy for their unrecognized genius and achievements. While the continent had been home to many empires, and indeed the Mali Empire was the richest one of its time, none of them reached same level of technological advancement as Europe.
Frankly, the assertion that Wakanda was the most powerful nation on the planet in Wakanda Forever was absurd. It's just plain idiotic from both a historical and world-building perspective. Wakanda can't build EVERYTHING out of vibranium and would need to trade with the outside world for resources. Plus, it's feasible that they could they could have simply successfully resisted colonization instead of hiding themselves away. Ethiopia managed to avoid colonization in the Scramble for Africa and even repelled an Italian invasion in 1896 so there is historical precedent for that. The discovery of Vibranium could've given Wakanda the means to rapidly industrialize, making it the "Japan of East Africa" and a regional power in its own right.
But nope. Marvel wanted to be both lazy and stupid to contrive a cultural moment.
