I notice that I’m getting older, do I need to start using makeup? I don’t know how. When I apply it I feel like a clown… I have a skincare routine but not much experience with makeup. Even back in college I would just put on some eyeliner and go.
I didn't start wearing makeup (besides concealer) until I was in my mid-20s, so I missed that developmental window where it's OK to walk around looking ridiculous because nobody in your age-group knows what the hell she's doing either, and then eventually you develop fine motor skills and an eye for color palettes.

Videos are useful, but there's nothing like a how-to book that you can prop open and reference whenever you want, plus books are inherently soothing to nerds and dorks (assuming here).

Kevyn Aucoin's Making Faces is written for an adult reader but still assumes almost no knowledge. It's a classic for a reason: you can use it as a very exact recipe book, but it also teaches underlying skills/aesthetics that you can experiment with on your own, or at least use to understand how someone created the look she's wearing.

Plus it's been in print since 1997 so it's easy to find a used copy.

It's almost the weekend. Have you been growing your hair out all winter and now that spring is here you're gonna cut yourself a fringe? *

I came across this helpful video about your face proportions as well as face shape and how to pick the right bang style to balance your face:

Browsing around the Ivy City Co. website. Found lots of cute stuff that I am tempted to buy, especially some cowgirl boots with embroidery on them.

Anyone have experience with this site? Good quality? Shit quality?

Update: I ended up ordering from Ivy City Co. I got a really pretty dress and a matching outfit for my daughter (intended for Thanksgiving lol), plus some embroidered cowgirl boots that were significantly marked down.

For the price that I paid, I'm not mad at my purchase. However, I do see "made in China" labels. It's good quality for that (it's leagues better than something you'd order from Amazon or purchase from Wal-Mart or Target, for example), but I don't know if I will purchase from there again ... At least at full price.

The cowgirl boots are so pretty, girly, and whimsical. They aren't uncomfortable, but I can easily tell that they aren't the most durable boots either (so I wouldn't wear these out in the rain or anything like that). I will absolutely wear the heck out of these next Summer ... They'll look so cute with sundresses.

No one’s asking for my recommendation on this, and skincare shouldn’t be gendered, but I use Pond’s Cold Cream a lot after I clean my face, and it’s never did me wrong.

There’s a reason why women have used it for so long. And it’s so inexpensive. I used the Coty Airspun powder for the same reason, when I still wore foundation. I was also able to find it at my local grocery store, and don’t have to go to an Ulta or Sephora for it.

I could smell the products as I was reading your post lol.

My grandmother used both products all of the time, so they are very nostalgic smells for me (in a good way).

I've always disliked heavy face makeup, so the Coty Airspun powder was a bit much for me, but I can totally see why people love it. And Pond's Cold Cream is THE best makeup remover ever. Nothing else comes close. It's also a pretty good nighttime moisturizer in my experience.

One cheap skincare recommendation I have is white bar Dial soap. I started using it as my face wash earlier this year, and my skin absolutely loves it.

I need help with dupes. I want to get my hands on the Ugg neumel boots in black but I am curious if there’s something similar at a cheaper price. Google hasn’t been helpful.

If you don’t mind waiting around, I bought my Ugg fuzz slippers and boots from Amazon, when they were on sale, but still listed with the Ugg brands Amazon page, and not a third party seller.
It was still expensive. But it makes shipping free, and I still paid at least $30-$50 less. The colors are limited though.

And for longevity with your boots if you buy Ugg brand, spray something like this on the outside and let it dry before you wear them. And only wipe them off with wet cloths if you need to clean them. It’s also kiwi branded, so it’s aesthetic.
It doesn’t snow where I live, but I got this advice from people living in areas where it does snow, in order to keep their shoes in better condition.
My slippers are home wear only, but they sat in my garage for about 2 years, and still look fairly new. I just needed to wipe them down.

FYI Yardley's as a brand is still actual talc.

I'd switch to using their lotion/spray at night or pick a brand of dusting powder that uses cornstarch, but it's up to you how concerned you are about the Big C.
Are they? I thought they switched to cornstarch a long while ago (at least that's what the ingredients label tells me), but if they had some lawsuit about sprinkling asbestos or other fun stuff into the mix I'll just find something else.

If the label says it's corn starch, you're good. I half-remembered not buying it in the past, and the label image I found on Amazon said talc, but who knows when that was updated.

From one girl to another, how the hell do you walk in heels without your feet hurting? Is there some kind of "heel training" I don't know about?
urgh. I dunno. I have been told that some women’s feet accommodate heels better than others, something to do with the way the bones in the forefoot are, and how your weight needs to be supported by those bones lying flat. But I’m not a foot doc so I dunno. I personally love how heels look but I struggle to walk in them. I suspect practise is key like others have said. I do have a couple of pairs of mid height heeled boots but they’re a solid heel I can manage. I think just start small and don’t go for six inch skinny stilettos all at once. And don’t walk any where long on them - there’s all day shoes and car-to/bar shoes

I don’t think you need it tbh. Wear sunscreen, if you needed actual makeup I’d keep it very light. Autumnal soft browns might looks nice on you. You have nice eyes - bit of eyeliner and mascara and a little brownish shadow on rhe outer upper lid if it’s a fancy event? I’m crap with makeup too though so don’t take my word for it. I’m stuck in 1992

This is more alt-fashion but the algorithm recommended it to me. I don't know where to put this.
I'm not familiar with japanese alt-fashion communities and I didn't watch the video (& I don't want to) but that clown tier makeup style, the nose ring and the words "toxicity of [x] community" on the thumbnail is rising some red flags for me.

Aren't whatever alt communities mostly negative though if there's purists? I'm not touching that video either, but I've had some loli's in class when I was still in college and one of them was always showing off specifically branded tier stuff (very expensive, outfits would easily go for 500 euros or more per outfit, not counting the shoes). They would always side-eye anyone wearing knock off or unbranded but cute things because it's not on brand. I wouldn't be surprised if other random J-alt fashion branches had the same thing happening. Tbh, I even assume the TikTok goths have the same shit going too nowadays, whereas that used to be a style nobody in the style gave you shit for if you just tried to be yourself with it.

My feet tend to get fucked up from normal flat shoes if i walk too much in them, so heels without platforms on the front fuck me up extra hard. I find the problem for most women to be either like mine, or not having enough calf strength to withstand the toe pointy walk and muscle strain. Most heels are uncomfortable as fuck though and will cause you pain, especially the thin heels thin front ones where your foot can keep slipping out and is bent out of shape. Some women absolutely nail suffering through the uncomfortable heels, but that could never be me.

Start off with the big ass platforms that are way more comfortable, get used to that and see if you can get used to other high heels.

Your skin is good and skincare will always be more important. If you want to try out make up i would recommend: a light foundation to even out your skin tone. Apply it to your hand first, then tap it with a damp beauty blender (however much you need for the part of your face you're applying to, then you tap more for other parts). It helps with your foundation not looking cakey which was the trend like 10 years ago and we are past that. Then finish with some powder to set it in and light bronzer (contouring imo looks ridiculous unless you're an influencer with a ring light or about to be on tv). Some eyeshadow to make your eyes pop if you'd like that, and a bit of mascara.
