I was looking at eyeshadows online and ended up ordering a Huda Pretty Grunge palette. So expensive, but damn it looks so gorgeous in the pictures...

You know what's been a game changer for my "easy, 5-minute" makeup routine? Brown mascara. Brown mascara has been around forever, but it has recently become trendy for this year since "natural" makeup is the thing right now, so I decided to try it out. When I need to go somewhere and I only have time to do some mascara and concealer, brown mascara is perfect for me. It defines my lashes, but looks way more natural on me than wearing black mascara by itself would.
I still like to wear black mascara when I do a full face (might switch to black-brown soon though), but I love how brown mascara looks by itself on me.
It's not something I would buy for myself since I don't wear dark eyeshadow like this (I think it looks great on so many people, but I don't think that I can pull it off at all, sadly-- my hair and skintone just don't work with it). But if I did wear dark eyeshadow, I would want to buy this in a heartbeat! There's a lot of colors I would use in the palette, but I would completely neglect the dark shades. The color story is so pretty, though!

This is spooky, I was only googling brown mascara yesterday!
I never could get black eyeliner to look nice so switched to brown and want to go with brown mascara next.

I think that black eyeliner has always looked weird on me, too. For the most part, I just use a matte dark brown eyeshadow to lightly line my eyes (and when I'm feeling more fun, I'll use a colorful eyeshadow for a subtle pop of color), but when I want to do actual eyeliner to look more glam, then brown is a must for me.
When it comes to my makeup, I am totally a "soft/neutral eyes + bold lip" kind of gal. Dark and bold eyeshadow scares me off, you put a red lipstick in front of me and I'll most likely buy it haha.

Have they stopped putting "not intended for use around the eye area" in small print on the back of their eyeshadow palettes?

I don’t own any brown mascara (i want to finish the one I own before buying anything else) but I LOVE brown eyeliner. it’s usually what I use when I pair it with an eyeshadow; if not, I use black.
And wow, the Huda beauty grunge palette looks gorgeous. Definitely out of MY price range but I’ve heard amazing things- hope you enjoy it. Reminds me of the MakeUp by Mario cool tone palette.
on the topic of eyeshadows, a few pages ago in the thread I mentioned having bought some from ColourPop - today I have hit pan on the supershock “Drift” single eyeshadow I bought. Oh well
. It’s so gorgeous, I’ll definitely repurchase it once I eventually finish it.
I never really wore eyeshadow prior to this so it’s the first time I’ve hit pan on one LOL.
I love bold lipsticks. Lately I’ve been wearing as a combo MAC rebel with MAC Spanish fly, like, mixed in. And NYX‘s buttergloss in the shade cranberry pie is my favorite kind of berry shade.

i used to be that kind of gal too!! I’m either that or the opposite- colorful eye and subtle lip. Never both.

I've been wearing brown mascara for years. I've got very light eyelashes, and on days where I just want to run some errands but don't want to look sickly, I do a few quick swipes with an eyebrow pencil, a couple quick whisks of the brown mascara, and a swish of light brown eyeshadow.

This has been my go-to for everyday "no makeup" makeup! Brown mascara and then tight lining with a cream/nude makes your eyes look so much more awake. I've tried white as well but I think it looks a little strange and stands out too much for me.

When you’re forced to skip the mascara altogether because of watery allergy eyes, brown liner makes for a decent substitution, too

Dropping in here to say that I HATE how hard the TikTok/musical.ly lip-syncing and dramatic camera movements have penetrated into every corner of the internet including makeup tutorials. How am I supposed to pay attention to what you're showing / telling me when I am too busy cringing at your sad attempts to be an iconic baddie?

You can still wear darker eye shadows provided that you keep them to the outer crease and by the lash line.Hello I'm still a bit new to makeup. Is there anyone that could give me eye makeup tips for really deep-set eyes? I don't hate my eyes or how "dark" they look, but every guide I come across focuses on "hiding" them rather than enhancing. I just want to decorate them in pretty colours without looking like a drag queen.I've learned to stay away from darker shades of eyeshadow though despite being drawn to dark colours.

This is precisely why my makeup techniques are more or less still stuck in 2010. Haha.
Could be worse-- my techniques could be stuck in 2016. I remember mid-late 2010s makeup being an unmitigated disaster.

This looked horrifying even back then ... Have no clue why so many people didn't think so before they did it to themselves, lol. I would literally rather go out bare-faced with an obvious acne breakout for everyone to see than to go out like this.
Speaking of this makeup look, I got married in 2016. I had to go to go to multiple beauty/hair/makeup vendors before I found one that would listen to my requests because most of them did the 2016 IHOP makeup, lol. Literally the first request I made to the ladies who ended up doing my wedding hair and makeup was "Please no instagram makeup." I was fully prepared to do everything myself if I didn't like how my look turned out during the trial, haha. I used pictures of Amy Adams from Enchanted and a red carpet Jessica Chastain look (which was a look that focused on light eyeshadow + longer, defined lashes) as references for what I wanted, and that's pretty much the makeup I wore for my wedding. I can look back at those photos and not cringe, fortunately haha.

I own pillow talk and spiders -- they are even prettier in person! They look different when you first apply but once it dries down it's BEAUTIFUL. My only complaint is the scent. It's kinda like soap? I'm a baby about fragrance though. Girlcult shadows are beautiful too but they have a lot of fallout so don't do your foundation before eyes.

Yeah, I've heard from others about the scent, too. I'm not too worried because that usually doesnt bother me; thanks for the heads up on the eyeshadows, though- I wasn't planning on buying any (yet, at least) because I want to use the palettes I own, but fallout is something I can't stand at all. I mean, it's not the worst thing, but I'd rather do without it.
On the topic of eyeshadows and eye makeup, do you kiwis prime your eye with concealer or an eye base or just normal foundation? Or nothing at all? And after, do you seal it with a setting spray or bake it? I've seen a lot of contradictory opinions even from MUAs....

I'm of the opinion that different things work for different people.
I've heard that eye primer is no longer the big thing to use among the youngins, but it's still a must for me (I use the Urban Decay one). Eyeshadow primer is more comfortable to wear on my eyelids than concealer because it's much thinner in consistency, and it works perfectly for preventing my eyeshadow from creasing, in my opinion.
I used to use face primer back in the day (the Smashbox one specifically), and then my skin changed a lot over the years, and now face primer just emphasizes any dry spots or breakouts I have at the time-- definitely makes my face look crusty. Face primer probably still works great for those with oily skin, though.
As for other face makeup, I hardly even use foundation anymore-- just tinted moisturizers or BB creams. Then, I lightly set it in with a translucent powder (the Besame Cosmetics powders are my favorite), and I use a setting spray (The Urban Decay All-Nighter is great, but ELF makes a dupe for it that I've recently discovered and I love it). Personally, I think that setting sprays are probably more helpful than primers unless you have SUPER oily skin.

My eyeshadow palettes just arrived! They're even prettier in person. Now, I tend to be EXTREMELY unlucky with eyeshadows no matter the price (they always come out chalky, patchy and not very pigmented), but I gave these ones a quick test and look really promising so far!

Yeah, thats what I have heard others say. Some MUA s ditching it altogether, others really defending some like the urban decay one or the 24hour eye base from MAC. Miss Megan Robinson, a MUA, swears by it; my makeup style is nothing like hers, but i love her videos, she's super knowleadgable and passionate in a way you don't see that often nowadays.
Same, I have yet to buy one. The options and techniques overwhelm me more than I was ever concerned with my complexion, so I just thought ah, fuck it.
This is super true for me. I don't use a base and the eye primer i did use didn't make that big of a difference, but setting spray was a TOTAL game changer. I think you are totally right that its more of a preference thing.
Yay! Congrats!!! It's so nice when a product meets one's expectations (or exceeds them).
Today a cool-toned gray lipstick I bought arrived and it's also super cool. On its own it's a BIT much for me but slightly sheered out with a gloss it's perfect and surprisingly flattering. It's very Dead Laura palmer-esque.
