Here's a whole thread about when the job went downhill.
When did the USPS go from the place that everyone wanted to work for to the place that no one wants to work for? (archive)
TL:DR
2008 - Hiring freeze, everyone hired since has started as a Transitional Employee.
2013 - City Carrier Assistant position created. TEs become CCAs, pay was cut from $22/hour to $16.25 (in exchange they got benefits and a pathway to a career) (current CCA pay is $19.33 btw). Also in 2013 USPS signed a contract where they handle Amazon's packages for stupid cheap. That led to more volume, longer hours, more strain on the carriers, and "Amazon Sunday" (remember when USPS wouldn't deliver on Sundays?)
2020 - People started shopping more online, parcel volume went crazy. Louis DeJoy appointed.
