yeah. I think this is basically what they would say when I was growing up. with the whole mean/dish being for good luck for the coming year.I was told that the black eyed peas are for the coins you're hoping to get this year, the greens the paper money. We did not take it very seriously, but it was, and still is, traditional.
It just reminded me of that. I hadn't thought about it in a while. It's interesting see others here also had the same tradition in their family. It's almost certainly a southern thing.
And yes, it's cabbage not collard greens. I remember because I hated eating the cabbage as a kid.
