HBO isn’t settling down in Lovecraft Country.
The premium cable network has cancelled the critically acclaimed science-fiction drama after just one season, our sister site Deadline reports.

The hybrid genre series is based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff. Set in the 1950s, Lovecraft Country follows an veteran named Atticus (played by When We Rise‘s Jonathan Majors) as he sets out on a quest to find his missing father (The Wire‘s Michael Kenneth Williams) in Jim Crow-era America.

“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country,” HBO said via statement. “We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”

The series drew heavily on the works of sci-fi/horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, of whom Atticus is a fan — despite the author’s known racism. The cast also included Courtney B. Vance (The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story), Aunjanue Ellis (Quantico), Jurnee Smollett (Underground), Wunmi Mosaku (Luther), Tony Goldwyn (Scandal) and Jaime Chung (Once Upon a Time).

Lovecraft Country joins other recent HBO renewals Curb Your Enthusiasm (Season 11), Insecure (Season 5) and Westworld (Season 4).

Must have been a white guys decision.

Fuck off bitch. You can keep bringing this up but Lovecraft will be known and beloved forever for what he gave the world with his stories while you will be alone and unloved forever with your 15 cats .

Lovecraft, like steampunk, is one of those genres that has a huge cult following but mainstream audiences seem to just check the fuck out on.

Can’t imagine why it got canceled…..

Funnily enough this was probably Lovecraft's dream life.

It is incredibly irritating how no one can write or talk about cosmic fiction without feeling the need to scree about how Lovecraft is evil and racist and they hate him, but at the same time it's hilariously satisfying that he's so inherently linked to the genre that he lives in their heads rent free and they can't escape mentioning him; the true cosmic entity all along.

He was a gentle and generous soul, and far superior to modern progressives.

Lovecraft took whatever fear he had of foreigners, and handled it by channeling it into wondrous stories. Also seafood. I'm like 90% certain he was squicked by seafood and thus: Cthulhu.

He just wanted to be left alone in merry old New England with his 15 cats. Progressives want to burn the world so they can be Kween of the ashes.

He actually did think sea creatures were the most unsettling and strangest creatures on the planet. It's bugs and especially parasites that do it for me.

What bothers me is the guy in my opinion was probably suffering from mental illness, schizophrenia would be my guess or something like that, so his racism was not coming from a normal, healthy mind, the lack of sympathy towards him for that bothers me, the fact that people can't seem to keep any sort of context or accept any nuance with it is wrong.

People are messy and complicated, that's what makes art interesting and his art in particular is a perfect example of that, the fact that people can no longer understand that people can be flawed but it doesn't always make them bad people or worthless.

That things is one of the most racist things I have ever seen and it comes from supposedly liberal people who supposedly support blacks.

But oh geez, notice my shock, surprise and incredulity at this show being shitcanned. What, did the average audience not enjoy constant finger-waggling, pearl clutching and moral grandstanding? Next you tell me white folks don't like being called racists based on their skincolor.

The "He was mentally ill" excuse only works for blacks, hispanics and muslims - especially after they committed a crime so heinous, depraved and inhumane, that even seasoned gore enthusiasts break out in a cold sweat of terror.

On a side note, while I haven't read either novel Lovecraft Country seems like it's ripping off a 2011 novel called "Southern Gods" by John Hornor Jacobs that did the "Lovecraft goes to the south" thing years before Lovecraft Country was published in 2016.

Are they trying to present that idea as awesome? Like "Fuck yeah, segregation rules!"? Insane times we live in.

Anyone that can't have empathy towards someone with mental illness because they're white is a real piece of shit.

Not that one needs mental illness in order to be sympathetic as a white person, but that's an especially low thing in my opinion.

Dude, people on Twitter lectured me that Martin Luther King was in favor of segregation in order to protect black people from whitey.
I shit you not. BLM monkeys are actually this fucking retarded.

When I pointed out how unquestionably wrong that is by posting MLK's "I have a dream"-speech, which these people did not know, they went two different routes: "How dare you white guy lecture us blacks on our own history, even if you're right and we're wrong" and "Yeah, and MLK got killed for his ideas, so clearly we need to escalate anti-white violence and segregate from them."

(like, when you portray yourself as in the tradition of MLK, you should at least be basically familiar with the first two sentences of his most iconic fucking speech, I'd say).

How in the hell do people genuinely not know Martin Luther King's speech? Education has failed us really badly lmao.

I can't imagine why HBO canned a show that clearly was going off the rails halfway through the first season when THIS was the pitch for Season 2.

How do you misunderstand the Lovecrafr mythos so badly you think "tehee, now the Elder Gods only pay attention to peeohcees" is a victory? That ending had to have been written by someone who had never read Lovecraft.

That map, while hilariously awful, is unsurprising. I don't know a whole lot about the show apart from its appalling wokeness, but I did read that it ends with a ritual that prevents white people from doing magic.

If anyone has seen it and can explain how it reaches such a conclusion without being totally laughable, I'd love to hear it.
