How is Emmet Till involved if the show is set in the present day? Are there time travel shenanigans or do they make him a lovecraftian entity that can't be killed by whitey?
The show is set in the 1950s, presumably in 1955 specifically, because Emmet Till is the best friend of one of the child characters and is murdered off-screen. At one point the characters
do travel back in time to the Tulsa Riots, and another character goes dimension hopping with Garnet from Steven Universe.
This whole fucking show SCREAMS of Black Supremacist narrative over all other races. Typically I don't care, but with all the shit we have to eat for things we like, I'm done ignoring their hypocritical stances just for 'art'. They also probably ignore the white people and Jews who died to get voting rights for blacks. It wasn't only dangerous for blacks down south. If you were for civil rights, it was dangerous. Period.
Honestly, it is just fucking political and racial garbage. If HBO wants to throw good money after bad, its on them. We just get to laugh at blatant propaganda that is pure dogshit shoved down pathetic rich white people's throats. Even though they know it is crap, they're forced to eat it.
Its fucking hysterical that they made a black racial purity series and did it so fucking obviously. 'WE'RE TAKING BACK LOVECRAFT BLACKS ARE SUPERIOR' Mind boggling.
Yes, in short, white people in Lovecraft Country are simply a monolithic evil hivemind without any clear goals or motivations other than oppressing the main characters. I'd be hard-pressed to name any modern media that treats POC characters like this, even the villains in the original (1984) Red Dawn are written with more sympathy and depth.
It falls into the trap of, as I touched on before, 'It's okay if black people do it!'
As an example, one of the events that really fucked up the main character's (Atticus/Tic) father is that someone screamed 'faggot' at him during the Tulsa Riots. This is treated as the height of evil and the source of all his trauma, but when Tic regularly screams 'faggot' at this father, he's just a poor, sweet, misunderstood baby, and actually, it's not even his fault, he's traumatized by racism! He never really makes amends, or does
any work to make up for screaming slurs at people, it's just okay for him to do it.
Another (black) character rapes someone (a white person) to death (that's not a typo or an exaggeration, a man is raped to death on screen), with the rape framed as triumphant and heroic. No more commentary here, the show legit frames a violent, brutal rape as justified and heroic because said rape was carried out by a black person.
Atticus, the main character, commits multiple war crimes, including being part of a kill squad that guns down begging nurses and tortures women and civilians to death, but again, that's White Imperialism's fault and actually, he's as innocent as a baby because black people don't make their own choices or something.
