One protester has died and dozens were injured as almost a quarter of a million people took to the streets of France, angry at rising fuel prices.

The female protester who died was struck after a driver surrounded by demonstrators panicked and accelerated.

The "yellow vests", so-called after the high-visibility jackets they are required to carry in their cars, blocked motorways and roundabouts.

They accuse President Emmanuel Macron of abandoning "the little people".

Mr Macron has not so far commented on the protests, some of which have seen demonstrators call for him to resign.

But he admitted earlier in the week that he had not "really managed to reconcile the French people with their leaders".

Nonetheless, he accused his political opponents of hijacking the movement in order to block his reform programme.

What has happened so far?
Some 244,000 people took part in protests across France, the interior ministry said in its latest update.

It said 106 people were injured during the day, five seriously, with 52 people arrested.

Most of the protests have been taking place without incident although several of the injuries came when drivers tried to force their way through protesters.

Chantal Mazet, 63, was killed in the south-eastern Savoy region when a driver who was taking her daughter to hospital panicked at being blocked by about 50 demonstrators, who were striking the roof of her vehicle, and drove into them.

The driver has been taken into police custody in a state of shock.

In Paris protesters approaching the Élysée Palace, the president's official residence, were repelled with tear gas.

Why are drivers on the warpath?
The price of diesel, the most commonly used fuel in French cars, has risen by around 23% over the past 12 months to an average of €1.51 (£1.32; $1.71) per litre, its highest point since the early 2000s, AFP news agency reports.

World oil prices did rise before falling back again but the Macron government raised its hydrocarbon tax this year by 7.6 cents per litre on diesel and 3.9 cents on petrol, as part of a campaign for cleaner cars and fuel.

The decision to impose a further increase of 6.5 cents on diesel and 2.9 cents on petrol on 1 January 2019 was seen as the final straw.

Speaking on Wednesday, the president blamed world oil prices for three-quarters of the price rise. He also said more tax on fossil fuels was needed to fund renewable energy investments.

How big is the movement?
It has broad support. Nearly three-quarters of respondents to a poll by the Elabe institute backed the Yellow Vests and 70% wanted the government to reverse the fuel tax hikes.

More than half of French people who voted for Mr Macron support the protests, Elabe's Vincent Thibault told AFP.

"The expectations and discontent over spending power are fairly broad, it's not just something that concerns rural France or the lower classes," he said.

The BBC's Lucy Williamson in Paris says the movement has grown via social media into a broad and public criticism of Mr Macron's economic policies.

Are opposition politicians involved?
They have certainly tried to tap into it. Far-right leader Marine Le Pen, who was defeated by Mr Macron in the second round of the presidential election, has been encouraging it on Twitter.

She said: "The government shouldn't be afraid of French people who come to express their revolt and do it in a peaceful fashion."

Laurent Wauquiez, leader of the centre-right Republicans, called on the Macron government to scrap the next planned increase in carbon tax on fossil fuels in January to offset rising vehicle fuel prices.

Mr Castaner has described Saturday's action as a "political protest with the Republicans behind it".

Olivier Faure, leader of the left-wing Socialist Party said the movement - which has no single leader and is not linked to any trade union - had been "born outside political parties".

"People want politicians to listen to them and respond. Their demand is to have purchasing power and financial justice," he said.

Is there any room for compromise?
On Wednesday, the government announced action to help poor families pay their energy and transport bills.

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced that 5.6 million households would receive energy subsidies. Currently 3.6 million receive them.

A state scrappage bonus on polluting vehicles would also be doubled for France's poorest families, he said, and fuel tax credits would be brought in for people who depend on their cars for work.

Protesters have mocked the president relentlessly as "Micron" or "Macaron" (Macaroon) or simply Manu, the short form of Emmanuel, which he famously scolded a student for using.

To be honest, I don't blame the driver at all.

I think Macron is going to call up the military to quell this movement with (lethal) force in the next month or two. Using a chopper to shoot tear gas at protestors is a fairly serious escalation, right next to having riot cops armed with live ammo rifles. This just keeps getting more fun to watch. Macron had best hope the army doesn't tell him to fuck off, because oh boy that's when things get real fun.
Considering he compared himself to the Roman god, Jupiter, I think he'd be arrogant enough to do just that. The question is, what would the fallout be if he goes this route?

At least they didn't move Fireman for a better shot

At best a coup that forces him out, which even then would be a mess because any interim government may have a bunch of wannabe Napoleons vying for legitimacy.

At worst a full on civil war in a major western European country.

Archived that tweet btw

He forgot that when you're posing as Jupiter you're supposed to have a slave stand behind you whispering "Thou art but a man" in your ear. He fails at Rome.

So Macron has been firing up his offensive against the protestors and it's resulted in its resulting in a fucking torrent of wounded. Hospitals in the area are filling up, and not only with protestors; there's numerous documented cases of riot police targetting basically anyone within reach, including French journalists.

One of the key reasons for the sudden spike in wounded seems to be because the French decided to up the deployment on a device for their Riot Police en masse: The Flash-Ball. Effectively, its a "soft" 44mm rubber ball hot-loaded into a grenade launcher shell. The idea is to create a maximum-impact, but zero-penetration projectile for use in riot siutations, but in practice, it's still hitting targets at around six to seven hundred feet per second and an impact of around 200 joules. Enough to shatter bones and cause organ damage at closer ranges, and now they're being actively used at point blank range. At this point, the French riot police have been caught on camera intentionally going for headshots and legshots, with a French Riot Policeman holding a fucking French journalist at gunpoint with a Flash-Ball launcher being the piece de la resistance.

Flashball.png

While the weapon's been around for about a decade, they've never caught on outside of France, Macau, and Portugal, despite being available: Even western law enforcement, which brought you LRADs and Tazers considers these things to be too fucking dangerous. To compare, a Ring Airfoil grenade, which *is* used by US law enforcement, hits at about 270 feet per second: Less than half that of the Flash-Ball.

The message on the ground seems to be that the French Riot Police have been told to break the back of the protests no matter the cost, but this is only going to foster further resentment and further swell the ranks of the Yellow Vests. There's going to be deaths if they keep up this heavy-handed approach, and god show mercy to these officers if that happens, because the French sure as fuck aren't going to.

It never ceases to amaze how the deeper you look into Europe from America, the more grateful you become to be away from there.

Cops can only go so far since have no barracks to go back to after they kill someone, and it's impossible to live in a community you are at war with. They'll break if this level of violence keeps up.

It's like that when you look at Europe from Europe, because unless you actively look for it, you won't know it either. They sure aren't telling you. Worse, they're actively hiding it, fucking with stats and keeping things out of the news.

The only way Macaroon could fuck this up more is to ask the German military to come in and conduct peackeeping operations.

It's amazing how little discussed this is. You have to go out of your way to find months old info, let alone anything current. In comparison, you couldn't google porn without tripping over Euromaidan shit back when that was a thing.

jesus christ the more it updates the worse it gets. i thought the protests would last a week at most but holy shit was i wrong. wonder what the endgame will be

I think the absolute saddest thing about all this is that even after all that's happened and Macron is inevitably out by hook or by crook, knowing the frogs they're just going to replace him with another massive scummy fuck up since a nation's politicians are only as good as a nation's society, culture and people

And so far, all three of those about France are all equally shit

Let me get into why the sudden urge seems to be on stopping the protests at all costs, and correspondingly, why the French are likely doing the entire world a service right now.

Like I said, the French are as they always have been, and any politician running for office needs to bear this shit in mind: If the French citizenry is happy, you, as a French politician, are also happy. If the French citizenry is not happy, they will plot to fucking destroy you. The French will put up with a certain level of shit with a smile, but once you push them too far, screw them over one time too many and especially fuck over their actual day-to-day shit, that's the end.

FRENCH ALWAYS WIN.jpg

Once the Baguettes are sufficiently riled, they will not relent. This will not stop until at least Macron steps down. If you're wondering why he won't, it's very simple: The EU knows if that if the French get to vote on their next official, they are going to fucking get someone openly Anti-EU in office. And that's very bad news for the EU. The protestors have been talking Frexit since at least November, with multiple calls for it throughout December. Odds are good that if Macron steps down or is somehow removed, his replacement is going to be, if the French have their way, openly Anti-EU.

So that explains why Macron wants them stopped. But why does the EU itself want these protests quashed?

Simple: Because other countries can see the writing on the wall and know what the French protests portend. Italy's already met with some of the Yellow Vest groups because it agrees with them. And it gets scarier for those in Brussels: The Yellow Vests are having a knock-on effect. You won't hear it from most mainstream news sources, but buzz from the boots on the ground is that Yellow Vest protests are starting in other EU areas, including the UK, the Netherlands, and even Belgium. That's right: right in the fucking EU's front yard.

There's an argument to be made that the French are actively trying to end the EU with this.

I've seen it mentioned in the last couple of pages that shooting the tear gas from helicopters is an escalation. Last month on the 8th, I was watching a livestream from Toulouse and they were shooting the tear gas from helicopters even back then.

You see Euromaidan was a heroic uprising against a despotic Russian crony. The Yellow Vests are a Russian Bot organized mob trying to overthrow a man of integrity like Macron.
Just in case you needed reminding that yes the Media do lie, especially by omission.

Because Euromaiden was manufactured by the west, and the leaders of the west are actively opposed to the Yellow Jackets.

I still suspect that Macron and various (((interests))) are hoping they can wait it out but they’re so out of touch that them waiting it out is interpreted as ignoring the people. They are creating a much bigger problem by hiding it.
